Chris McGuire is Founder and CIO of Phalanx Capital Management, a Chicago-based Japan and Asia focused multi-strategy investment management company he launched in 2005. The firm specializes in Japanese convertible bonds and the Japanese asset swap market, a highly specialized asset class which provides very low correlation to global markets.
In this Opalesque.TV interview, Chris describes why the convertible bond market and asset swapping in Japan are unlike any other asset class in the world and how this strategy can provide investors with uncorrelated returns.
According to Chris, Japan's longstanding near-zero interest rate environment and limited listed options market drive a thirst for yield and massive convertible bond demand. This demand for the hybrid securities, which are part fixed income and part equity, creates opportunity to hedge out credit risk through asset swapping. By stripping out the fixed income component of convertibles and selling the bonds to a counterparty, who in turn repackage and distribute them throughout Japan to hungry regional banks and insurance companies, an attractive equity option remains. Asset swapping thereby either eliminates or severely reduces credit risk and provides non-correlation to global markets. With no listed equity options exchange in Japan, professionals also use convertibles to create optionality in building long volatility portfolios in a large economy where there is very little competition.

Christopher McGuire
Christopher McGuire (born November 28, 1975 -) is an American drum set player, session drummer, drum teacher, and producer. He is based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States.
Early life and career
Christopher McGuire was raised in a musical family. His mother is a singer and his father is an organist. He grew up in Oxford, Ohio, United States.
In 1992, McGuire and other long-time friends and Oxford natives began the band 12 Rods. The group moved to Minneapolis in 1995. McGuire served as the drummer for the band from the start of their career until late September 1999 when he left the group.
In the summer of 2003, McGuire was hired as a support musician by Japanese band Quruli (くるり) to temporarily fill the position of drummer for the group for summer festival performances. However, in November 2003 he was hired by Quruli as a full-time member. He continued on with the group, both recording and touring, for the next 11 months. In October 2004 it was announced that Christopher would be leaving Quruli due to creative differences. Since his departure, the group has only filled the position of drummer with temporary support musicians.

12 Rods
12 Rods (also known by the stylistic variant 12RODS) was an indie rock band formed in Oxford, Ohio, United States in 1992. The group went on to relocate to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1995 until its end in 2004.
History
An early incarnation of the group that would become 12 Rods was formed in Oxford, Ohio, in May 1992, initiated by Talawanda High School student Ryan Olcott. Friends and fellow students Christopher McGuire, Matt Flynn, and Daniel Perlin were included as members of the band. At this time the group was known as Ryan'z Bihg Hed, a name coined by Flynn in reference to Olcott's purported behavior during their rehearsals. The band prepared numerous songs for a performance early in the summer of 1992 at a local high school graduation party named "Field Fest 3". A cassette recording of this performance, titled Helikopter Hundrid Dolurz, became their first release before the group disbanded until July 1992 when Olcott was invited to sing in for a new group formed by McGuire, Flynn, and Daniel Burton-Rose at a performance at the end of the summer. Olcott accepted and the roster went on to name themselves "12RODS", a title discovered by Flynn in a passage from a children's Bible.

Chris McGuire is Founder and CIO of Phalanx Capital Management, a Chicago-based Japan and Asia focused multi-strategy investment management company he launched in 2005. The firm specializes in Japanese convertible bonds and the Japanese asset swap market, a highly specialized asset class which provides very low correlation to global markets.
In this Opalesque.TV interview, Chris describes why the convertible bond market and asset swapping in Japan are unlike any other asset class in the world and how this strategy can provide investors with uncorrelated returns.
According to Chris, Japan's longstanding near-zero interest rate environment and limited listed options market drive a thirst for yield and massive convertible bond demand. This demand for the hybrid securities, which are part fixed income and part equity, creates opportunity to hedge out credit risk through asset swapping. By stripping out the fixed income component of convertibles and selling the bonds to a counterparty, who in turn repackage and distribute them throughout Japan to hungry regional banks and insurance companies, an attractive equity option remains. Robert Leupp Jr. died on the fourth of July 1944 after walking on a land mine. 5 years later the US government sent a letter to the family stating that they had found a shoe with a serial number, some bone fragments and a handkerchief with his initials. Robby's family chose to have him laid to rest in Europe amidst his comrades in arms.

On May 5, 2004, John Runge of the Virginia Beach Police Department got a call from a fisherman stating that he had found a suitcase floating in the Chesapeake Bay.
Five days later another suitcase washed up on the shores of Fisherman's Island; inside that suitcase was the torso of white male severed from the waist down. His head and arms were still attached. Later, a third suitcase with body parts was found by a fisherman and his wife.
The victim was eventually identified from a sketch: William McGuire, from Woodbridge, N.J.
McGuire was married to Melanie, who tells correspondent Maureen Maher, "When I heard how my husband was killed I was in complete disbelief and I could not imagine what he went through."
Three months after the body of Bill McGuire was found in the Chesapeake Bay, his beautiful wife was not only a widow -- she was also a murder suspect.
