Why Did Armed Officers Raid a Strip Club and Take Photos? Don't Cops Have Better Things to Do?!
Ten armed officers stand poised for action outside a building. What kind of hardened thugs might be lurking inside? Murderers? Rapists? How about unlicensed strippers? Earlier this month, San Diego Police Department officers raided a Cheetahs strip club to bust any dancers who weren't properly permitted. "I didn't know if it was a bank robbery or serial killer on the loose the way they had come in like that," said manager Rich Buonantony. "The show of force, show of power was incredible." The officers were so committed to the operation that they spent hours meticulously documenting all 30 dancers' paperwork and bodies (with cameras, of course!). "They made me feel like I was a gang member pretty much and they wanted to document every single one of my tattoos," said stripper Katelynn Delorie. Yes, this is the same San Diego where the mayor and police chief have recently resigned amid a variety of sex scandals. Mayor Bob "Feel 'Em Up" Filner's scandals were of his own making, while Chief William Lansdowne oversaw a department beset by scandals involving officers, such as Christopher Hays, who faces felony charges for groping and illegally detaining women and Anthony Arevalos who is serving time for his habit of demanding sexual favors from women he pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving. So, while they're on the clock, maybe San Diego's finest could ignore the neighborhood strippers and keep their eyes on each other instead. 1 minute, 45 seconds. Officers on Trial in Killing of Kelly Thomas
The trial of former Fullerton, California, police officers, Manuel Ramos and Jay Cicinelli began December 1, 2013, in the beating death of Kelly Thomas, a 37-year-old drifter with schizophrenia. Thomas died after a July, 2011, altercation with six police officers in which he was tasered, beaten with batons, and hit repeatedly in the face with the end of a Taser. Ramos is charged with involuntary manslaughter and second-degree murder and Cicinelli is charged with excessive force and involuntary manslaughter. Opening statements from District Attorney Tony Rackauckas detailed Thomas begging the officers to stop. "He posed no threat at all, to the police or to anyone else," said Rackauckas to jurors. The District Attorney dramatically demonstrated the events of the encounter using a wooden police baton. Statements from the defense maintained that Ramos and Cicinelli committed no crimes and were dealing with an uncontrollable and violent person. Michael Schwartz, defense attorney for Cicinelli told jurors in his statements that Thomas's behavior "was consistent with someone with a methamphetamine background" and that his death was brought on by drug-induced heart disease. The toxicology report at the time of the incident found no drugs in Thomas' system. The trial, taking place at the Orange County Courthouse in Santa Ana, California, is the first time a uniformed police officer has been charged with murder in the history of the county. The trial may never have happened without a slowly built citizen movement sparked by footage of the beating caught by mobile phone and a horrific hospital photo taken by Kelly Thomas' father, Ron Thomas. "Nothing was going on, I tried contacting everybody, nobody cared to do anything," said Ron Thomas to Reason TV in 2011. "So, I released the picture of my son [in his hospital bed] and that got everybody's attention. When the cell phone video came out, I released that. The audio had their attention again. You put together the picture with the sound of what's happening [and] it's very, very compelling." The Fullerton community reacted in outrage at the video and photo at city council meetings and at protests outside the Fullerton police department. Then when city surveillance footage was released of the beating, residents pushed for a recall of city officials. Video produced by Paul Detrick.- published: 04 Dec 2013

Albuquerque police shooting: Helmet cam footage shows officers killing armed homeless man
Albuquerque police shot and killed 38-year-old homeless man James M Boyd earlier this month. The APD has released police helmet cam footage that has sparked debate over whether or not their use of deadly force was justified. Police approached Boyd about camping in an open area on March 16, but he refused to leave or comply with police orders. Boyd had had a long history of violent offences and mental health related issues. Officers tried talking to him for over three hours before they resorted to the use of deadly force around 7:30 p.m. Authorities first fired a stun-grenade at Boyd before sending in a police dog that video footage shows appearing to bite his hand and letting go. After Boyd refused to drop the two knives he was wielding at the time, officers moved in to subdue him. The crucial moment in the police's justification for the shooting came when the officer in charge of the police dog attempted to redirect the dog's attention towards the suspect. The video shows Boyd appearing to turn around yet Albuquerque Police Chief Gordon Eden stated the unarmed officer was threatened. Officers are then seen using a taser and six live rounds on Boyd, bringing him to the ground. They command him to drop the knives, but he doesn't respond. They fire several bean-bag rounds at him and unleash the dog before approaching with caution. Boyd was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Chief Eden defended the officers' actions at press conference citing "Garner vs Tennessee" to justify the shooting. The officers who fired three times each, Keith Sandy and Dominique Perez, have been placed on leave. The Federal Department of Justice has been investigating of the APD's use of force since 2012.- published: 24 Mar 2014

A third of King City, Calif. police officers arrested for corruption
A six-month-long investigation in central California culminated this week with the arrests of five members of the King City Police Department, the former police chief and the owner of a local towing company. According to the Monterey County district attorney, for at least three-and-a-half years the city's top police officers participated in a scheme that took advantage of poor area Hispanics by essentially stealing their cars for profit. Investigators say King City police ordered hundreds of vehicles to be impounded — most often those driven by Hispanic immigrants — and then either kept the cars for themselves or re-sold them for profit.
