Benché non abitata, Changuu è stata importante nella storia di Zanzibar, in particolare a partire dalla seconda metà del 19° secolo, e dai suoi diversi utilizzi possono essere spiegati i nomi che via-via prese: originariamente era chiamata Changu o Changuu che è il nome di un pesce molto comune in queste acque, a partire però dallultima decade del 19° secolo è stata anche conosciuta da tutti come Prison Island o Quarantine Island.
Seyyid Majid bin Said, secondo Sultano Omanita di Zanzibar (1856-1870), diede lisola a due Arabi che la usarono per confinarvi i loro schiavi ribelli; allinizio del 1890, il Governo di Zanzibar comprò lisola per costruirvi la Prigione Centrale, che a quel tempo si trovava nellOld Fort. La prigione fu costruita, ma lisola non fu mai utilizzata a tale scopo: Zanzibar era alla fine del 19° secolo il più importante porto dellAfrica Orientale, ed ogni anno marinai, commercianti e migliaia di lavoratori che arrivavano dallIndia per costruire la ferrovia per lUganda facevano poi ritorno nellisola. Il propagarsi del colera in Egitto e poco dopo la Peste Bubbonica a Bombay agli inizi del 1890, fecero si che le Autorità Inglesi per timore del diffondersi di epidemie attraverso le navi ed i loro passeggeri, decidessero di creare una zona di Quarantena in Changuu Island, al fine di proteggere lincolumità dei territori Inglesi in Africa Orientale. La vecchia Prigione, quindi, venne utilizzata come Ospedale.
Lisola, tuttavia, non è stata sempre usata solo per ragioni sanitarie in quanto, a causa del sistema dei monsoni, le navi approdavano a Zanzibar in particolare fra Dicembre e Marzo. Per molti mesi quindi, durante lanno, non cerano persone in quarantena sullisoletta; fu questa la ragione per cui Changuu divenne uno dei luoghi di riposo e di cura preferiti dagli Europei residenti a Zanzibar.
Durante gli anni 1920 nuovi abitanti arrivarono sullisoletta: la comunità della non pericolosa specie di Aldabra Giant Tortoises (le tartarughe), un regalo che il Governo delle Seychelles fece agli inglesi residenti. History
Changuu is named after the Swahili name of a fish which is common in the seas around it, though it is shown as "Kibandiko Island" on some older maps, but this name is no longer used. The island was uninhabited until the 1860s when the first Sultan of Zanzibar, Majid bin Said, gave it to two Arabs who used it as a prison for rebellious slaves prior to shipping them abroad or selling them at the slave market in Zanzibar's Stone Town. Zanzibar became a British protectorate following the 1890 Heligoland-Zanzibar Treaty with Germany, this resulted in the appointment of a British First Minister, Lloyd Mathews, in October 1891. Mathews purchased Changuu from its Arab owners on behalf of the Zanzibar government in 1893 with the intention of building a prison upon it. The prison was to have housed violent and recidivist criminals from the part of the African mainland which was then under the jurisdiction of Zanzibar. Despite the prison buildings being completed in 1894, causing the island to become known commonly as "Prison Island", the facility never housed prisoners.

An island /ˈaɪlənd/ or isle /ˈaɪl/ is any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water. Very small islands such as emergent land features on atolls can be called islets, skerries, cays or keys. An island in a river or a lake island may be called an eyot or ait, or a holm. A grouping of geographically or geologically related islands is called an archipelago, e.g. the Philippines.
An island may be described as such despite the presence of an artificial land bridge, for example Singapore and its causeway, or the various Dutch delta islands, such as IJsselmonde. Zanzibar
Zanzibar (/ˈzænzᵻbɑːr/) is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania in East Africa. It is composed of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25–50 kilometres (16–31 mi) off the coast of the mainland, and consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba. The capital is Zanzibar City, located on the island of Unguja. Its historic centre is Stone Town, which is a World Heritage Site.
Zanzibar's main industries are spices, raffia, and tourism. In particular, the islands produce cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper. For this reason, the islands, together with Tanzania's Mafia Island, are sometimes called the Spice Islands (a term also associated with the Maluku Islands in Indonesia). Zanzibar is the home of the endemic Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkey, the Zanzibar Servaline Genet, and the (possibly extinct) Zanzibar Leopard.
Etymology
The word Zanzibar comes from Arabic Zanjibār (زنجبار), which is in turn from Persian Zang-bār (زنگبار), a compound of Zang (زنگ, "Black, negro") + bār (بار, "coast").

A prison,correctional facility, penitentiary, gaol (Ireland, UK, Australia), or jail is a facility in which inmates are forcibly confined and denied a variety of freedoms under the authority of the state as a form of punishment. di Gianluca Procaccini L'Isola di Changuu è situata a 3 miglia e mezzo a Nord-Ovest di Stone Town; è lunga circa mezzo miglio e ampia nella parte più larga circa 250 yards; è facilmente raggiungibile in 20 minuti con una sicura barca.
Benché non abitata, Changuu è stata importante nella storia di Zanzibar, in particolare a partire dalla seconda metà del 19° secolo, e dai suoi diversi utilizzi possono essere spiegati i nomi che via-via prese: originariamente era chiamata Changu o Changuu che è il nome di un pesce molto comune in queste acque, a partire però dallultima decade del 19° secolo è stata anche conosciuta da tutti come Prison Island o Quarantine Island.
Seyyid Majid bin Said, secondo Sultano Omanita di Zanzibar (1856-1870), diede lisola a due Arabi che la usarono per confinarvi i loro schiavi ribelli; allinizio del 1890, il Governo di Zanzibar comprò lisola per costruirvi la Prigione Centrale, che a quel tempo si trovava nellOld Fort. La prigione fu costruita, ma lisola non fu mai utilizzata a tale scopo: Zanzibar era alla fine del 19° secolo il più importante porto dellAfrica Orientale, ed ogni anno marinai, commercianti e migliaia di lavoratori che arrivavano dallIndia per costruire la ferrovia per lUganda facevano poi ritorno nellisola. Il propagarsi del colera in Egitto e poco dopo la Peste Bubbonica a Bombay agli inizi del 1890, fecero si che le Autorità Inglesi per timore del diffondersi di epidemie attraverso le navi ed i loro passeggeri, decidessero di creare una zona di Quarantena in Changuu Island, al fine di proteggere lincolumità dei territori Inglesi in Africa Orientale. La vecchia Prigione, quindi, venne utilizzata come Ospedale.
Lisola, tuttavia, non è stata sempre usata solo per ragioni sanitarie in quanto, a causa del sistema dei monsoni, le navi approdavano a Zanzibar in particolare fra Dicembre e Marzo. Per molti mesi quindi, durante lanno, non cerano persone in quarantena sullisoletta; fu questa la ragione per cui Changuu divenne uno dei luoghi di riposo e di cura preferiti dagli Europei residenti a Zanzibar.
Durante gli anni 1920 nuovi abitanti arrivarono sullisoletta: la comunità della non pericolosa specie di Aldabra Giant Tortoises (le tartarughe), un regalo che il Governo delle Seychelles fece agli inglesi residenti. Inizialmente furono ospitate nella Residenza del Console Generale Inglese, ma poiché alcune furono rubate e vendute illegalmente, fu deciso di trasferirle sullisola di Changuu, dove la comunità conta oggi oltre cento esemplari.

Changuu Island (also known as Kibandiko, Prison or Quarantine Island) is a small island 5.6 km north-west of Stone Town, Unguja, Zanzibar. The island is around 800m long and 230m wide at its broadest point.[1] The island saw use as a prison for rebellious slaves in 1860s and also functioned as a coral mine. In this video, I attend a Balinese cremation ceremony in Ubud, Bali. This grand funeral ritual is a part of the Hindu religion in which the Balinese people believe that the burning of the bodies releases the spirits. These spirits can then move on to the next phase of their life. If left uncremated, the spirits are believed to become spectres.
Known as Ngaben which means 'turn to ash,' the Royal Cremation ceremony takes place once a year in Ubud Bali.
Several dozen corpses are exhumed and brought to a central location to burn. Due to the high cost associated with such an elaborate performance, cremation on an individual basis is uncommon. Villages typically perform mass cremations, such as this one, to elevate the cost.
This cremation ceremony is not sombre, but rather a celebration. Few tears are shed here. Loved ones know that it's only a temporary absence and they will soon meet up with their friends and family.
Beautifully ornate sarcophagi resembling holy cows and lions are made out of paper mache and wood. The coffins are then placed inside of these sarcophagi, and the entire structure is burned.
Offerings of all sorts including live birds, roast pig, and rice are carried throughout the procession and are later placed on the sarcophagi. Live gamelan music is performed throughout the entire process in which young men carrying instruments walk towards the final burning area.
The cremation ceremony which consists of Balinese music, colorful outfits, and chanting typically lasts several hours, and ends late in evening when the bodies are burned. It's a very special experience being able to attend such an intimate and spiritual event. I highly recommend checking out Ubud's cremation ceremony if you happen to be visiting Bali during the month of July.
In this video, I also ate at a traditional nasi campur restaurant. Warung Sopa is located in the center of Ubud and offers delicious vegetarian food at reasonable prices.
The atmosphere is mellow and encourages diners to leave their shows at the front entrance. The way this restaurant works is that you can either order off their set menu (which offers an array of asian speciality dishes), or you can order at the front where they have a display case stacked with dishes.
Nasi campur is the national dish of Indonesia and consists of many different types of Balinese dishes on one plate. These dishes are all centered around a mound of rice. It's advised to eat at three varied dishes all at once so you can experience a culmination of flavors at once.
The Balinese dishes at this restaurant are absolutely spectacular! The food is served in little bowls made of banana leaves which is pretty neat and produces a beautiful aesthetic. I love eating at this restaurant! I definitely suggest trying this place out if you want a quick meal and are looking for something healthy.

When it comes to islands worth visiting in Southeast Asia, few can compete with the allure of Bali; however, if you're expecting a Utopian pristine paradise, as often is depicted in the movies and popular culture, you'll be in for a rude awakening. Bali is what it is -- unicorns and warts alike. Although there is stunning scenery, world class beaches and enchanting Hindu temples to explore there is also eyesore rubbish piles, filthy beaches and unscrupulous touts to content with.

Welcome to Bali, Indonesia!
After spending nearly a year travelling in Southeast Asia, we couldn't leave without first visiting Bali. We decided to take a 2 week trip to the famed island and split our time between Ubud and Sanur to explore as much as possible.
During one of our first nights on the island, we attended a Balinese fire and trance performance. This dance and music drama originated in the 1930s, depicting stories from Hindu literature.
Ubud is the art and cultural capital of Bali and we enjoyed spending a few days here. Our mornings in the town were spent visiting the various temples, browsing through markets, and soaking in the surroundings.
We also had a chance to visit the Tegalalang Rice Terraces. They were lush, green, and reminded us of our time in Korea because Sam's apartment overlooked rice terraces.
Bali is mainly Hindu and the island is home to many temples. During our time in Bali we visited the Elephant Temple, which is best known for its menacing cave entrance.
We also visited Gunung Kawi, which is nicknamed the Rock Temple. The rock temple gets its name because of the 10 shrines that were carved into the rock wall and stand 7 meters tall. They are truly a sight to behold.
Well, I am supposed to sprinkle water on my head, so here we go.
During our tour around the island, we stopped at a lookout point where we saw the impressive Mount Batur looming in the horizon. Mount Batur is an active volcano, however, when we learned that it was open to hikers, we decided we were up for the challenge.
Bali is a great jump off point for exploring some of the surrounding beaches and islands. Trips to Lombok, Nusa Lembongan, and the Gili Islands are very easy to arrange. There are plenty of water sports to choose from including snorkeling, free diving, scuba diving, surfing and even kayaking.
Ubud is home to the monkey forest where infamous little macaques roam freely. The monkey forest is home to over 600 monkeys, who over time have lost all fear of man. The monkeys are not shy and will approach people and even climb onto their bodies if they believe you have food. If you're feeling adventurous and would like to feed the monkeys, you can purchase bananas right at the entrance of the monkey forest.
One of the highlights of our time in Bali, was climbing Mount Batur for sunrise. The morning of the hike, we got up at 2 in the morning and were driven to the base of the volcano.
Overall, we really enjoyed our time in Bali! It may not have been the quiet paradise that's depicted in the movies, but it offered culture, natural beauty, and it was a great place to relax.
