CERN Update: The Higgs Boson - Is it the God Particle?
CERN Update: The Higgs Boson - Is it the God Particle?
... CERN/LHC Update: The Higgs Boson - Is it the God Particle? CERN confirms existence of new particle consistent with Higgs boson. Is the Higgs boson the long-sought God Particle? And what do scientists think about the metaphor The God Particle? The ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN presented their latest results in the search for the long-sought Higgs boson. Both experiments see strong indications for the presence of a new particle, which could be the Higgs boson, in the mass region around 126 gigaelectronvolts (GeV). --- Please SUBSCRIBE to Science Reason: • • • • --- CERN experiments observe particle consistent with long-sought Higgs boson We now have more than double the data we had last year, said CERN Director for Research and Computing, Sergio Bertolucci, that should be enough to see whether the trends we were seeing in the 2011 data are still there, or whether theyve gone away. Its a very exciting time. If and when a new particle is discovered, ATLAS and CMS will need time to ascertain whether it is the long sought Higgs boson, the last missing ingredient of the Standard Model of particle physics, or whether it is a more exotic form of the boson that could open the door to new physics. Its a bit like spotting a familiar face from afar, said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer, sometimes you need closer inspection to find out whether its really your best friend, or actually your best friends twin. The Standard Model gives an extraordinarily precise picture of the matter that makes up all the visible universe, and the forces that govern its behaviour, but there are good reasons to believe that this is not the end of the story. For example, we know from observation that the visible universe is just 4 of what seems to be out there. Its hard not to get excited by these results, said CERN Research Director Sergio Bertolucci. We stated last year that in 2012 we would either find a new Higgs-like particle or exclude the existence of the Standard Model Higgs. With all the necessary caution, it looks to me that we are at a branching point: the observation of this new particle indicates the path for the future towards a more detailed understanding of what were seeing in the data. We have reached a milestone in our understanding of nature, said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer. The discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson opens the way to more detailed studies, requiring larger statistics, which will pin down the new particles properties, and is likely to shed light on other mysteries of our universe. Positive identification of the new particles characteristics will take considerable time and data. But whatever form the Higgs particle takes, our knowledge of the fundamental structure of matter is about to take a major step forward. • ... --- Tags: god particle higgs boson higgs particle god particle higgs boson new higgs-like cern lhc cms atlas experiments physics standard model supersymmetry susy mass matter universe results videos .- published: 28 Jan 2014

Revealing The Truth:
Long long time ago a stranger asked me to make his portrait... So I did.
I sent him the image and I never heard back from him again since that moment.
Than I saw one painting and I felt that it was very familiar to me: http://www.tadaocern.com/VincentVanGogh/VVGP.jpg
And then I got it - It was a copy of my photo!
I did a little research on that and it seem that the guy who draw(copied) it is quite well known around...
His name is Vincent Van Gogh and I was lucky enough to make his portrait.
Pity that he never mentioned me and I can't find his contact now...
This video is a comparison of both images.

There has been a lot of interest in the original mp3, lyrics, and vocals for remixing. You can find all that here:
https://www.msu.edu/~mcalpin9/lhc_rap...
There's also been interest in translation. You can get a subtitle-free version from Vimeo here (downloadable):

With backing track available here (with and without Hawking-style voice):

Go ahead and translate, rap it, and post it! Just give us a shout-out, and it's probably a good idea to include the following credits ;-)
Images came from:
particlephysics.ac.uk, space.com, the Institute of Physics, NASA, Symmetry, and Marvel
I forgot Einstein Online, and they called me out: http://www.einstein-online.info
The talented dancers doubled as camera people, with some work by Neil Dixon. Stock footage is CERN's.
Will Barras is responsible for the killa beats:

And thanks to MC Hawking, who first thought of using computer-voice to bring Stephen Hawking to the world of rap :-)

The rapper has a day job (we agree this is a good thing) as a science writer.

THE MOMENT OF THE ANNOUNCEMENT (PHYSICS NOBEL PRIZE 2013)
THE MOMENT OF THE ANNOUNCEMENT (PHYSICS NOBEL PRIZE 2013)
Geneva, 8 October 2013. CERN physicists from ATLAS and CMS celebrated at CERN the award of the Nobel Prize in physics to François Englert and Peter W. Higgs "for the theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles, and which recently was confirmed through the discovery of the predicted fundamental particle, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider." The announcement by the ATLAS and CMS experiments took place on 4 July 2012 at CERN. Members of the ATLAS and CMS collaborations present at CERN on Oct. 8 assembled in their building (b. 40) on the CERN Meyrin site to watch the live webcast from Stockholm. This VNR shows the physicists waiting for the announcement, celebrating the announcement and listening to a short spontaneous speech by CERN's director general Rolf Heuer, who congratulated the theoretical physicists for the award and the experimental physicists at CERN for their discovery. The Higgs particle was discovered by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, each of which involves over 3000 people from all around the world. They have constructed sophisticated instruments -- particle detectors -- to study proton collisions at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC), itself a highly complex instrument involving many people and institutes in its construction. The Brout-Englert-Higgs (BEH) mechanism was first proposed in 1964 in two papers published independently, the first by Belgian physicists Robert Brout and François Englert, and the second by British physicist Peter Higgs. It explains how the force responsible for beta decay is much weaker than electromagnetism, but is better known as the mechanism that endows fundamental particles with mass. A third paper, published by Americans Gerald Guralnik and Carl Hagen with their British colleague Tom Kibble further contributed to the development of the new idea, which now forms an essential part of the Standard Model of particle physics. As was pointed out by Higgs, a key prediction of the idea is the existence of a massive boson of a new type, which was discovered by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN in 2012. The Standard Model describes the fundamental particles from which we, and all the visible matter in the Universe, are made, along with the interactions that govern their behaviour. It is a remarkably successful theory that has been thoroughly tested by experiment over many years. Until last year, the BEH mechanism was the last remaining piece of the model to be experimentally verified. Now that it has been found, experiments at CERN are eagerly looking for physics beyond the Standard Model. The A roll and B rolls contain footage shot on Oct 8 2013, footage of the discovery announcement at CERN on July 4 2012 (including interviews given at the time by Peter Higgs and Francois Englert at CERN just after the seminar announcing the discovery) and general CERN, LHC, ATLAS, CMS and Higgs boson event displays footage.
