In the U.S., "Professors" commonly occupy any of several positions in academia, typically the ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or full Professor.

Research and education are among the main tasks of professors with the time spent in research or teaching depending strongly on the type of institution. Publication of articles in conferences, journals, and books is essential to occupational advancement. As of August 2007 teaching in tertiary educational institutions is one of the fastest growing occupations, topping the U.S. Department of Labor's list of "above average wages and high projected growth occupations," with a projected increase of 524,000 positions between 2004 and 2014.

Most professors in the U.S. are male,^{[citation needed]}liberal (in the American political sense), and upper middle class. A slight majority of professors ranked among the top 15% of wage earners, in 2005.

According to a study by Robert Lichter, a professor at George Mason University, "The vast majority of professors in the United States identify themselves as liberal, and registered Democrats commonly outnumber registered Republicans." This varies across departments. Despite the liberal leaning of most professors, political scientist Brett O'Bannon of DePauw University has pointed out that the liberal opinions of professors seem to have little if any effect on the political orientation of students. In terms of education, the vast majority hold doctorate degrees. Professors at community colleges may only have a master's degree while those at four year institutions are commonly required to hold a doctorate degree.

Norman Bell (born 16 November 1955) is an English former footballer, born in Hylton Castle, Sunderland, who played in the Football League for Wolverhampton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers.

Bell began his career at Wolverhampton Wanderers as an apprentice in 1971, and turned professional in 1973. He made his senior debut for the club on 23 September 1975 in a goalless draw with Aston Villa, but appeared only a handful of times in that season, which ended in relegation from the First Division.

Overlooked for the club's 1976–77 promotion campaign, he returned to the fold in the following season. With John Richards sidelined, Bell played regularly in the 1978–79 season, until breaking his leg in an FA Cup tie at Crystal Palace in February 1979. As a result of the injury and the addition of Andy Gray to the Molineux attack, Bell next featured in the first team more than a year later, in March 1980, when Wolves fielded a weakened side a few days before the League Cup Final. He found it hard to gain regular football and eventually left to join Blackburn Rovers in November 1981. In total, he scored 24 goals in 100 games for Wolves.

Steven ("Steve") James Lewis (born 20 May 1986) is an English pole vaulter.

Lewis was born in Stoke-on-Trent, he went to Holden Lane high school and spoke to 6 Towns Radio about his progress for his olympic qualification. His personal best jump outdoors is 5.71 metres, achieved in July 2008 in Bydgoszcz, while indoors his best is 5.75 m, achieved in Manchester on 17 January 2009. Lewis finished in fourth place at the 2009 European Indoor Championships with jump of 5.71 m, which resulted in British head coach Charles van Commenee praising his development.

Simon Gibbons is Professor of Medicinal Phytochemistry and Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biological Chemistry at The UCL School of Pharmacy.

He was the 2005 recipient of the Phytochemical Society of Europe Award for Phytochemistry and was a Fellow of the The Prince's Foundation for Integrated Health. In 2010 he was appointed to the Home Office Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) as the Chemistry Council member and is Chairman of the ACMD's Novel Psychoactive Substances Work Group (NPSWG) which is tasked to look at the area of 'legal high' Novel Psychoactive Substacnces (NPS). From 2010-2012 he was a member of the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory products Agency (MHRA) Herbal Medicines Advisory Committee (HMAC). He is a member of the Governing Council of the College of Medicine and from 2010-2016 is President and Vice-President of the Phytochemical Society of Europe.

His research interests are on the isolation and structure elucidation of bioactive natural products from plants and 'legal-high' drugs of abuse.

Don Adams (April 13, 1923 – September 25, 2005) was an American actor, comedian and director. In his five decades on television, he was best known as Maxwell Smart (Agent 86) in the television situation comedy Get Smart (1965–1970, 1995), which he also sometimes directed and wrote. Adams won three consecutive Emmy Awards for his portrayal of Smart (1967–1969). He provided the voices for the animated series Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales (1963–1966) and Inspector Gadget (1983–1986) as their title characters. He voiced Sid Pickles in all episodes of Spike & Mike (1993–1999), and two follow up films, Spike & Mike Movie and Spike and Mike: Got Hostaged.

Adams was born Donald James Yarmy in Manhattan, son of William Yarmy and his wife Consuelo Dieter. His father, a restaurant manager, was Hungarian and Jewish and his mother was Irish and Roman Catholic. Adams and his brother (actor Dick Yarmy) were each raised in the religion of one parent: Don in the Catholic faith of their mother, and Dick in the Jewish faith of their father.
