UN Security Council tries to ease Ukraine tensions
Interim Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk spoke at the United Nations Security Council on Thursday, regarding the situation in Crimea. Residents of the autonomous republic will vote in a referendum on Sunday to decide if the region should join Russia or remain part of Ukraine. US President Barack Obama said the US would "completely reject" the outcome of the vote. The interim leader also called on Russia to return its forces to their barracks on the Crimean Peninsula. Nuclear War
"Nuclear War" by Sun Ra Arkestra
On February 12, 2013, North Korea successfully conducted its third underground nuclear test.
While this in itself deserves condemnation by the international community, all nuclear and chemical weapons, nuclear reactors, nuclear powered vessels, and nuclear wastes in the Pacific endangers the lives of the inhabitants and the environment and deserve critical condemnation.
Last month, when North Korea announced the nuclear test the UN Security Council passed a resolution (SC/2087) fortifying sanctions against North Korea. Sanctions have never worked and have only harmed the North Korean people. The UN Security Council only met for two minutes to agree on this punitive resolution!
Important to note that only the United States has used nuclear weapons on a civilian population and has prepared and threatened to attack North Korea with nuclear weapons at least nine times.
In the past year, the United States has extended the range of South Korea’s ballistic-missile technology to target all of North Korea.
Demand an end to all nuclear testing, including the resumption of nuclear energy in Japan. Nuclear accidents are not a matter of "if," but a matter of "when" as recently witnessed from the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi reactor collapse, resulting in the ongoing radiation poisoning to the region.
Between 1945 and 1992 the U.S. conducted (by official count) 1054 nuclear tests, and two nuclear attacks, while France conducted 189 nuclear tests. Fallout as a result of these tests have had tragic consequences on the Marshallese and Micronesians that the US continues to downplay, as well as those in French Polynesia.
As early as 1983, Nuclear Free Independent Pacific issued a Peoples' Charter opposing the nuclear ambitions of industrialized countries. With Obama's "Pacific Pivot", the U.S. is transferring most of its military resources to the Pacific with the cooperation of NATO.
March 1st 1954 is is Nuclear Free Independent Pacific Day, commemorating the anniversary of "Castle Bravo" the first test of a thermo-nuclear hydrogen bomb near the Bikini Atolls in Micronesia.

Senator No: Jesse Helms
"Don't miss 'Senator No'... a fascinating account filled with detail [and] interesting revelations." - Jack Betts, The Charlotte Observer
"a fascinating and sometimes complex portrait" - Danny Hooley, The News & Observer
“No American politician is more controversial, beloved in some quarters and hated in others, than Jesse Helms," wrote The Almanac of American Politics as the conservative North Carolina Republican neared the end of his 30-year U.S. Senate career.
From the moment he arrived in Washington in 1973, Helms began injecting hot-button issues into American politics. His notorious political action committee became the largest in the nation with its pioneering use of direct mail and negative television ads. The "New Right" movement he spearheaded played a leading role in mobilizing Christian conservative voters and electing Ronald Reagan in 1980.
Two decades later, as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Helms became the first legislator from any country to address the U.N. Security Council--all this from the man a Canadian newspaper once called "redneck primitive."
“Senator No: Jesse Helms” explores the origins of Jesse Helms's politics, from his Southern Baptist roots in the Jim Crow South to his political baptism in North Carolina's racially-charged 1950 U.S. Senate race. Trumpeting Old South values as an editorialist and politician, he crashed headlong into the civil rights movement, communism, abortion, gay rights--virtually every major issue of his time. Yet in the twilight of his career, Helms had a very public--and intriguing--reversal on international AIDS relief.
Independent filmmaker John Wilson had unique access to Helms himself, vast archives spanning his 60 years in media and politics, and a diverse group of Helms's allies, opponents, and observers, from Jerry Falwell to Bono. Actor Will Patton narrates, with an original music score by Chris Frank of the Red Clay Ramblers. Wilson’s previous collaborations with UNC-TV include the Emmy Award-winning “Dr. Frank: The Life and Times of Frank Porter Graham,” narrated by Charles Kuralt.

Libya's president did not deserve the appalling treatment he received last week in New York
By Linda S. Heard, Special to Gulf News
Published: 23:02 September 28, 2009
Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi was shabbily treated during his visit to New York to make his first ever address to the United Nations General Assembly. What was supposed to be an historic re-binding of ties between Libya and certain Western nations was a predetermined flop.
Evidently, states such as the US and Britain that promised normalisation of relations with Libya in return for the handing over Lockerbie suspects for trial and dismantling its nuclear programme have reneged on the implicit bargain.
Their behaviour towards the Libyan leader was little short of insulting. Canada, for instance, announced that its delegates would not be present when he delivered his speech, while British Prime Minister Gordon Brown told the BBC in advance that he had no intention of attending.
Brown later tried to score brownie points with the White House, which had rejected five British requests for a Brown-Obama one-on-one. When it came time for him to speak he turned his sarcasm on the Libyan leader.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the US Ambassador to the UN quit the chamber before he spoke while UN officials made sure that the Libyan leader didn't accidentally brush shoulders with President Barack Obama.
This state-level hostility was mimicked by the people of New York and New Jersey, who made it clear that they didn't want Gaddafi in their country by organising street protests and childish campaigns to ensure that he would not be allowed to sleep in his Bedouin tent.
It seems to me that those people could learn a lot about hospitality from the Middle East, where overseas guests are invariably treated with respect. Moreover, it is incumbent upon New York, which hosts the UN headquarters, to ensure that all delegates are properly treated irrespective of whether they happen to be in the good graces of the US or British governments.
In any event, if the demonstrators were upset at the early release of terminally ill Abdul Basset Ali Al Megrahi on compassionate grounds, their ire should have been directed elsewhere. Al Megrahi was sent home by the Scottish justice minister with the British

Ukraine PM accuses Russia of military aggression at UN
March 13, 2014 - Ukraine's prime minister told the U.N. Security Council on Thursday that Russia had carried out a "military aggression" in Crimea, and dramatically switched from English to Russian to ask Russia whether it wants war. Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin gave him a direct answer: "Russia does not want war and neither do the Russians, and I'm convinced the Ukrainians don't want that either." Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said Ukraine has had "warm and friendly relations" with Russia for decades and he is also convinced "that Russians do not want war." "And I hope that the Russian government and the Russian president will heed the wishes of their people and that we return urgently to dialogue and solve this conflict," he said. Churkin did not respond to Yatsenyuk's call to return to talks. Instead, he urged a return to the European-mediated plan in which Ukraine's protest leaders and ousted President Viktor Yanukovych agreed on Feb. 21 to form a new government and hold an early election. Russia refused to sign the agreement. In his brief speech, Yatsenyuk accused Russia of violating the U.N. Charter and several treaties and urged Moscow to pull back its troops in the Crimean Peninsula to barracks and to start real negotiations to tackle the conflict. The public in Crimea will vote on Sunday whether to break away from Ukraine and become part of Russia. Russia on Thursday conducted new military maneuvers near its border with Ukraine. "This aggression has no reasons and no grounds," Yatsenyuk said. "This is absolutely and entirely unacceptable in the 21st century, to resolve any kind of conflict with tanks, artillery and boots on the ground." Yatsenyuk stressed that the conflict goes beyond his country's borders, reminding the council that Ukraine gave up the world's third-largest nuclear arsenal in 1994 in exchange for guarantees of its territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence. "After these actions, it would be very hard to convince anyone in the globe not to have nuclear weapons," he said. The council was holding its sixth meeting on Ukraine in less than two weeks. It has been unable to take any action because Russia, as a permanent member, has veto power. Shortly before the meeting, the United States circulated a draft resolution which would reaffirm the Security Council's commitment "to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders." The draft, obtained by The Associated Press, urges all parties "to pursue immediately the peaceful resolution of this dispute through direct political dialogue," to protect the rights of minorities in Ukraine. It notes that Ukraine has not authorized Sunday's referendum in Crimea, and "declares that this referendum can have no validity, and cannot form the basis for any alteration of the status of Crimea." Diplomats said the resolution's aim is to show the strong opposition in the U.N.'s most powerful body to a Russian takeover of the pro-Russia Crimea — even though Russia is virtually certain to veto any resolution. Supporters are hoping that China, which usually supports Russia but has stressed the importance of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, will abstain rather than veto the resolution. Samantha Power, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, told the council that more than 20,000 Russian troops are in Crimea ahead of Sunday's referendum. She said the United States and other nations "call for the suspension of this referendum, which cannot be regarded as legitimate, especially against the background of foreign military intervention." British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant added that a "free and fair referendum cannot possibly be held where voters are casting their ballots under the barrel of a gun."- published: 14 Mar 2014
