Ecotourism and Community forestry for poverty reduction in Nepal
PEI supports six countries in Asia Pacific to achieve Sustainable Development by integrating ecological, climate and fairness concerns into national, subnational and sectoral economic decision making and planning processes. The programme supports Ministries of Finance, Planning and Local Government to direct public and private investments to achieve greener, more inclusive economies. PEI's impact on institutions, policies and investments is the result of a wide range of interventions. These vary from capacity building for decision makers in sustainability and climate change adaptation; to producing sound economic research and analysis; tracking public spending on climate change; improving enforcement of environmental regulations.- published: 03 Sep 2013

Blue Elephants - documentary about migrant workers in Malaysian electronics industry
This short documentary shows the dire labour conditions of migrant workers in the Malaysian electronics industry. Men and women from Nepal, Indonesia and other countries come as contract workers to work for Dell, HP, Intell and other well known brand companies.
Migrant workers pay several thousands of dollars in commission to labour agents to get work permits. Workers often engage in heavy debts to obtain such permits which may grant them a stay in Malaysia for five year maximum. Time to pay off these debts is limited, while pay is low. Migrant workers face discrimination in Malaysian society as well as on the work floor, and have to accept bad housing conditions. The work load is heavy, and when worker fail to meet set targets, they risk immediate dismissal. When workers get pregnant or fall ill, they are sent back home at their own expenses.
The documentary has been produced by Moritz Siebert in cooperation with World Economy, Ecology, development (WEED), for the European Procure IT Fair campaign.

Out of the Darkness - Theatrical Version - Trailer
Out of the Darkness (82' Cinema / 52' with English commentary) is a Documentary about the effort of two humanitarian doctors dedicated to eradicate preventable blindness in the remotest regions on Earth. Dr Ruit and Dr. Tabin work since more than 15 years towards eradicating preventable blindness from the developing world. Connect with us and spread the word about the incredible life-changing work of these doctors!
Synopsis
More than half of the world’s preventable blindness is caused by cataract disease, a clouding of the clear lens of the eye. In developing countries like Nepal, it is not only a personal tragedy, but can devastate the economy of entire communities. Fortunately, it is also easy to cure. Cataract surgery is one of the most effective medical interventions on earth, but until recently was considered too expensive to provide to the rural poor.
Most of the world’s blind people live in remote, impoverished areas. The majority of doctors able to cure them work in cities. Dr. Sanduk Ruit from Nepal, and his American partner, Dr. Geoff Tabin, have made perfecting a portable low cost surgical procedure to restore sight their life‘s work. They trek to Nepal’s remote Northeast, carrying an entire hospital on porters‘ backs. Their mission is to bring the needlessly blind out of the darkness.

Tim Page Great Conflict Photojournalism of our time.
a vast personal archive captured over five decades by one of the world's most famous war photographers. Tim Page is tonight's Talking Head. Great to have you here, thank you.
Tim Page left England at 17 to travel across Europe, the Middle East and to India and Nepal. He found himself in Laos at the time of the civil war and ended up working as a stringer for United Press International.
From there he moved on to Saigon where he covered the Vietnam War for the next five years working largely on assignment for TIME-LIFE, UPI, PARIS MATCH and ASSOCIATED PRESS. He also found time to cover the Six Day War in the Middle East in 1967.
Recovery for Tim came in the form of involvement with Americas Vietnam Vets who were worse off than himself. He became a carer for amputees and traumatically shocked and stressed young men whose future was now looking very bleak as the govt of the day abandoned them. One of these young men was Ron Kovic, who was portrayed by Tom Cruise in the film Born on the Fourth of July and at last their plight which Tim had been documenting and was also very much a part off was revealed to the rest of the world. The 70s also found Tim freelancing for music magazines such as Crawdaddy and Rolling Stone. This enabled him to add images of rock n roll legends to his archive.
It was while he was recovering in hospital in spring 1970 that Tim learnt the fate of his best friend, house mate and fellow photographer Sean Flynn, (son of Hollywood actor Errol) who had been captured in Cambodia. Throughout the 70s and 80s, Pages mission was to discover the fate and final resting place of his friend and to erect a memorial to all those in the media that were either killed or went missing in the war. This led him to found the Indochina Media Memorial Foundation and was the genesis for the book REQUIEM. With his friend Horst Faas, photo editor for Associated Press and double Pulitzer Prize winner, they co-edited the book and commemorated the work of all the dead and the missing, from all nations, who were lost in the thirty year struggle for liberation.
Awards bestowed on Tim for both his photographic and humanitarian work:
The Robert Capa Award
The American Society of Media Photographers Award (the 6th recipient in history)
Vietnamese Cultural Hero of the Revolution (7th recipient in history)
The Infinity Award
The George Polk Award
The Overseas Press Club Award
The Olivier Rebbot Award
The National Press Photographers Association
The Irish Press Photographers Association
In 2003, Tim went to The Solomon Islands for KCELJAG (The Key Centre of Ethics, Law, Justice and Governance) to cover the Australian Governments Peace Intervention Force. He documented the handing in and cutting up of 3,600 weapons all of which was achieved with soccer matches, dog handling displays, face painting and bagpipes! No flak jackets required! This created a template for future interventions that will respect culture, heritage, religion, traditions and most importantly not allowing troops into town to create a false economy.
Tim has returned cathartically to Indochina 50 times, during which he has become patron of MAG (Mine Action Group) profiling and highlighting the plight of the victims of wars most insidious weapon the landmine.
Every two years, Tim through his foundation, the IMMF, hosts a photo workshop in Vietnam, followed by a two week exhibition of the images.
His interest and passion now is to bring the worlds attention to the plight of the innocent victims. He gifted the Requiem exhibition to the Vietnamese govt, where it has become the most visited tourist sight in Vietnam and when exhibited at QCA Gallery in Brisbane, Australia, one person per minute passed through the exhibition.
Tim no longer covers wars, he freelances from Brisbane, has taken up a position as Adjunct Professor of Photojournalism at Griffith University.
Tim is also one of the founding member of a new Australia Collective Agency called ºSOUTH
John Miller sitting in front.

Learning vs Education
As long as we are not aware
of the ritual through which school shapes
the progressive consumer - the economy's
major resource - we cannot break the spell
of this economy and shape a new one.
by Ivan Illich
After screening of the documentary “Schooling the World” (directed by Carol Black, link to the trailer: http://schoolingtheworld.org/), I facilitated and filmed a conversation with postgraduate students of Holistic Science and Economics for Transition at Schumacher College in April 2012 (Juliana Schneider, Ruth Potts, Megaia Beyer, Adriana Puech, Chris Tittle, Denise Curi and Brigita Laykovich).
The equipment was basic, hence the quality of this first video I have made. Captured stories, related to education that you have heard (or you will hear) are based on personal experiences of 6 inspiring individuals who have been and still are on a very interesting journey of exploration, discovering what is possible beyond the mental constructs and brick walls.
Many relevant issues have been raised; such as systemic problems of education, standardization, indoctrination and institutionalization of education, disconnection from reality and surrounding environment, abstraction, education becoming a business, needs for alternatives (example of Efecto Mariposa and principles of Steiner School), reconnection to the land and a need for a more holistic way of learning, which gives equal opportunities to all. Most important; creating an environment for individuals where they can learn from each other, from the land, surrounding environment, from their ancestors and to further develop their own, unique way of thinking, doing and being.
Personally, I feel I was being robbed of my own experience too often, while being at school. For example, having to read the poem and interpret it the way it was suggested at the end of the book, or the way my teacher wanted the poem to be interpreted, instead of having the freedom to share my own experience of the poem. I found that very disturbing.
Sir Ken Robinson puts it very well; saying that schools today are still being organized as factory lines on ringing bells, with separate facilities, specialized into separate subjects. Children are being educated in batches, depending on their age group. This story brings a cold image of an assembly line, while the whole schooling process appears like a standardized manufacturing process. I’m sure this “rings a bell”!
To start changing the way people think, we first have to start with the process of awareness rising among educators and those connected to education; either students, parents or policy makers. This video is a first step of inquiry, which will further develop through the process of dissertation.
Few words about the people you have just seen, or you're about to see in this video:

South Korean development: Lesson for Nepal
In 1960, South Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world for over a decade. In 1960, its gross domestic product per capital was $82 -- lower than most sub-Saharan African countries, Latin America and Asia. Five decades ago, South Korea was poor than Nepal. They did not natural resources, abundant educated manpower, and suffered from 'overpopulation' in its small territory. It was sometimes reeling under food scarcity and the country's entire budget and economy depended on aid. Time has changed now. The country has witnessed a remarkable transformation in the last three decades. Now, Korea is a developed country with a high-income.
