Lao NEWS on LNTV: BOL promotes the use of Lao kip as national currency.5/5/2014
VO The Bank of the Lao PDR (BOL) promotes the use of Lao kip as national currency INTRO: The Bank of the Lao PDR Deputy Governor, Sonexay Sithphaxay unveiled that, a high inflation rate and economic uncertainty are among the main reasons the use of foreign currencies has remained high. According to him, Lao people believe foreign currencies remain the most valuable asset they can own STORY: The press conference was held to answer questions raised by members of the public who called the submissions hotline at the sixth Ordinary Session of the National Assembly in December last year. Sonexay Sithphaxay said, Law enforcement is not strict enough to punish offenders or vendors who fail to follow the regulations. Many businesspeople still lack awareness of the laws concerning the national currency. He said the Bank of the Lao PDR had stepped up its campaign to promote the use of the Lao kip. According to him, inspections of the pr ices of goods in kip, ensuring payments were made in kip and enforcing regulations were the responsibilities of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, inspection officers and market management sectors. Sonexay Sithphaxay said, the government sectors and local authorities should work harder to promote the use of kip and enforce the rules about its use more strictly. He concludes that, the BOL would continue working to keep the currency stable, secure the exchange rate and keep the rate of inflation lower than the rate of economic growth.- published: 09 May 2014

Lao NEWS on LNTV- Japan and JICA provides 400 billion kip loan for hydropower. 25/6/2013
VO The Japanese government through JICA provides 400 billion kip (5 billion yen) loan for hydropower expansion INTRO: The Japanese government, through the Japanese International Cooperation Agency better known as JICA ,will provide a loan of more than 400 billion kip or about 5 billion yen to the Lao government for the Nam Ngum 1 Hydropower Station expansion project. STORY: An agreement in relation to the loan was signed recently in Vientiane by Deputy Minister of Finance, Santiphab Phomvihane, and Chief Representative of JICA in Laos, Koichi Takei. The expansion project will aim to increase the station's generation capacity to meet peak power demand in the capital region, adding an extra 40MW power generation unit at the site. Nam Ngum 1, located about 65km north of Vientiane, was the first hydropower project in Laos, with Japan providing construction support since 1960 and maintenance support since 2000. It is expected the hydropower station will contribute to alleviating the power deficit in the capital even during the dry season.- published: 28 Jun 2013

Japan grants 192 billion kip for two projects in Laos
The Japanese Government has granted 192 billion kip for the construction of Sekong bridge and also a human resource development scholarship scheme to accelerate the economic growth of Laos. The signing ceremony for the two project grants was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vientiane yesterday. The project agreement was signed by the Ambassador of Japan to Laos, Mr Hiroyuki Kishino and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms Sounthone Sayachak among honourable guests who attended the event. The cost of construction of the Sekong bridge on National Road 16B in Sekong province is approximately 2197 million yen , which is around 172 billion kip and the human resource development scholarships are also worth around 257 million yen, which is approximately 20 billion kip. At the ceremony, Mr Kishino emphasised the importance of infrastructure and human resource development in accelerating economic growth. This could potentially enable poverty eradiation through the equitable distribution of benefits. Sekong province is divided into two areas by the Sekong River as there is no connecting bridge. The eastern parts of the province are relatively undeveloped. The first project aims to vitalise the regional economy across the river by improving transportation through the construction of a bridge, which will stimulate economic activities on both sides. This will help improve the residents' financial situation, particularly in the lesser developed areas. If NR16B is connected by this bridge, it would also increase cross-border trade between the southern part of Laos and its neighbouring countries. Ms Sounthone believes these grant aid projects will significantly contribute to the socio-economic development of Laos as well as many other projects under the Official Development Assistance from the Japanese Government. She said the project would push toward the improvement of infrastructure and improve residents' income to effectively create favourable conditions to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and graduate from least developed country status by the year 2020. Over the past 20 years Japan has supported the Lao road transport sector by extending 27.6 billion yen in Japan's Official Development Assistance, which is equivalent to around 217 billion kip. The second project awards scholarships to those who are engaged in the socio-economic development of Laos, to study at a graduate school in Japan for advanced learning and research. Ambassador Kishino mentioned that Japan had funded 294 Lao citizens to study in Japan under this programme over the past 15 years. Ambassador Kishino said, "Japan has been engaged with the economic and social development of Laos for many years. Indeed the Japanese 2013 fiscal year has been remarkable for Japan and Laos' relationship as significant achievements were made in both concessional loans and grants in addition to technical cooperation. I would like to try and maintain this momentum in cooperation with the Lao government." By Phoonsab Thevongsa (Latest Update May 10, 2014)- published: 10 May 2014
