Cambodia (Listeni/kæmˈboʊdiə/;[8] Khmer: កម្ពុជា, Kampuchea, IPA: [kɑmˈpuˈciə]), officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia (Khmer: ព្រះរាជាណាចក្រកម្ពុជា, Preăh Réachéanachâk Kâmpŭchéa) and once known as the Khmer Empire, is a country located in the southern portion of the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. Its total landmass is 181,035 square kilometres (69,898 sq mi), bordered by Thailand to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Vietnam to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest. With a population of over 14.8 million, Cambodia is the 70th most populous country in the world. The official religion is Theravada Buddhism, which is practiced by approximately 95% of the Cambodian population. The country's minority groups include Vietnamese, Chinese, Chams, and 30 hill tribes.[9] The capital and largest city is Phnom Penh, the political, economic, and cultural center of Cambodia. The kingdom is a constitutional monarchy with Norodom Sihamoni, a monarch chosen by the Royal Throne Council, as head of state. The head of government is Hun Sen, who is currently the longest serving non-royal leader in South East Asia and has ruled Cambodia for over 25 years. Cambodia's ancient name is "Kambuja" (Sanskrit: कंबुज).[10] In 802 AD, Jayavarman II declared himself king marking the beginning of the Khmer Empire which flourished for over 600 years allowing successive kings to dominate much of Southeast Asia and accumulate immense power and wealth. The Indianized kingdom built monumental temples including Angkor Wat, now a World Heritage Site, and facilitated the spread of first Hinduism, then Buddhism to much of Southeast Asia. After the fall of Angkor to Ayutthaya in the 15th century, Cambodia was ruled as a vassal between its neighbors until it became a protectorate by the French in the mid-19th century. Cambodia gained independence in 1953. The Vietnam War extended into Cambodia, during which the Khmer Rouge took Phnom Penh in 1975 and later carried out the Cambodian Genocide from 1975-1979 when they were ousted by Vietnam and then fought against the Vietnamese backed People's Republic of Kampuchea in the Cambodian--Vietnamese War (1979-1991). Following the 1991 Paris Peace Accords Cambodia was governed briefly by a United Nations mission (1992-1993). The UN withdrew after holding elections in which around 90% of the registered voters cast ballots. The 1997 coup placed power solely in the hands of Prime Minister Hun Sen and the Cambodian People's Party who remain in power as of 2013. Cambodia has since had one of the best economic records in Asia, with economic growth averaging 6 percent for the last 10 years. Strong textiles, agriculture, construction, garments, and tourism sectors led to foreign investments and international trade.[11] Oil and natural gas deposits found beneath Cambodia's territorial waters in 2005 remain mostly untapped, due in part to territorial disputes with Thailand.[12][13] Despite economic improvements as of 2013 the Human Development Index (HDI) ranks Cambodia 138th place (tied with Laos) in terms of human development indicating that Cambodia has medium to low development presently.[14]- published: 24 Feb 2014

'Everyday in Cambodia' (P1) - A HEARTBREAKING Story of Little Vietnamese, Cambodian Girl
(CNN) 'Every Day In Cambodia' is a powerful CNN Freedom Project documentary which follows Academy Award-winning actress and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Goodwill Ambassador to Combat Human Trafficking Mira Sorvino on a disturbing yet ultimately hopeful journey to Cambodia, where she shines a light on modern-day slavery. Far from the bright lights of Hollywood, Sorvino speaks to survivors and urges governments to prosecute traffickers, demanding to know why the Cambodian government is still allowing this outrage to happen. Three mothers also reveal why they allow their young daughters to be so cruelly exploited. "The brave Cambodian girl survivors who shared their stories broke my heart," she said. "But their incredible spirits inspire me to continue fighting this atrocious scourge until all the victims can be brought to safety and their traffickers to justice." Sorvino teams up with American activist and founder of Agape International Missions (AIM) Don Brewster, who has dedicated his life to rescuing and rehabilitating young girls from sex trafficking in Cambodia. These young victims are sold to pedophiles who pay hundreds of dollars to have sex with pre-pubescent virgins. To many of these young girls, Brewster is their hero. The hour-long film also looks at how AIM's work in Cambodia is supported by other organizations like 3Strands, which provides sustainable work for rescued victims of human trafficking. "This is one of the most remarkable and difficult documentaries CNN has produced through the Freedom Project," said Tony Maddox, Executive Vice President and Managing Director for CNN International. "This is tenacious and fearless journalism, and we are immensely proud to be able to highlight this crucial story and help act as a champion for change." When a poor family in Cambodia fell afoul of loan sharks, the mother asked her youngest daughter to take a job. But not just any job. The girl, Kieu, was taken to a hospital and examined by a doctor, who issued her a "certificate of virginity." She was then delivered to a hotel, where a man raped her for two days. Kieu was 12 years old. "I did not know what the job was," says Kieu, now 14 and living in a safehouse. She says she returned home from the experience "very heartbroken." But her ordeal was not over. After the sale of her virginity, her mother had Kieu taken to a brothel where, she says, "they held me like I was in prison." She was kept there for three days, raped by three to six men a day. When she returned home, her mother sent her away for stints in two other brothels, including one 400 kilometers away on the Thai border. When she learned her mother was planning to sell her again, this time for a six-month stretch, she realized she needed to flee her home. "Selling my daughter was heartbreaking, but what can I say?" says Kieu's mother, Neoung, in an interview with a CNN crew that travelled to Phnom Penh to hear her story. Like other local mothers CNN spoke to, she blames poverty for her decision to sell her daughter, saying a financial crisis drove her into the clutches of the traffickers who make their livelihoods preying on Cambodian children. "It was because of the debt, that's why I had to sell her," she says. "I don't know what to do now, because we cannot move back to the past." It is this aspect of Cambodia's appalling child sex trade that Don Brewster, a 59-year-old American resident of the neighborhood, finds most difficult to countenance. "I can't imagine what it feels like to have your mother sell you, to have your mother waiting in the car while she gets money for you to be raped," he says. "It's not that she was stolen from her mother -- her mother gave the keys to the people to rape her." Brewster, a former pastor, moved from California to Cambodia with wife Bridget in 2009, after a harrowing investigative mission trip to the neighborhood where Kieu grew up -- Svay Pak, the epicenter of child trafficking in the Southeast Asian nation. "Svay Pak is known around the world as a place where pedophiles come to get little girls," says Brewster, whose organization, Agape International Missions (AIM), has girls as young as four in its care, rescued from traffickers and undergoing rehabilitation in its safehouses. In recent decades, he says, this impoverished fishing village -- where a daughter's virginity is too often seen as a valuable asset for the family -- has become a notorious child sex hotspot. "When we came here three years ago and began to live here, 100% of the kids between 8 and 12 were being trafficked," says Brewster. The local sex industry sweeps up both children from the neighborhood -- sold, like Kieu, by their parents -- as well as children trafficked in from the countryside, or across the bor- published: 10 Feb 2014

For those that are planning to go, here are my top 8 Cambodia travel tips (which are probably not unique to Cambodia):
* The level of English was higher than I expected, but try to learn a few words in Khmer (Cambodian), even if it's only 'hello' and 'thank you', it goes a long way.
* If you intend to buy a Lonely Planet before you come out -don't bother. There are lots of people (usually landmine victims) that sell them, they'll be more grateful that you buy a book from them than Amazon will ever be.
* Even though there is some good stuff in the Lonely Planet, don't live by it, use it as a basic template. Remember that it's only 1-2 people's opinion. Check out sites like TripAdvisor.com and WikiTravel.org also restaurants and cafes will have free guides which are more up to date and written by people that live there.
* Give the 'The Killing Fields' film a miss, it gives little explanation of what happened. Read Survival in The Killing Fields by Ngor Haing it's an amazing but horrific first hand account of what happened in Cambodia.
* Bring small pocket change (pence/cents), you can dish them out to the kid sellers when you're not interested in buying their bracelets or books. Their money is in note form, so they hardly see coins and the kids went nuts for them.
* It is generally safe but it's not unheard of that drive-by bag snatching occurs. Make sure your bag strap is around your torso and the bag in front of you, as opposed to on your shoulder by your side. I happen to witness one a few metres in front of me and the bag was snatched off a girl's shoulder as smooth as silk.
* It does get tiresome and annoying that amputees constantly approach you to sell you postcards and books, but appreciate the fact that they're earning their keep as opposed to the able-bodied beggars here at home.
* Remember to use your eyeballs, appreciate being there in the moment. Break the routine of thinking about composing shots and angles, leave the camera at the hotel for a day. The sad reality is that you'll probably spend more time looking at the scenery on a computer screen than you will with your eyeballs.
Enjoy.

Cambodia Hyperlapse
A movie I made to stretch my creative and technical abilities - Ive grown tired of the standard timelapse and wanted to help push the genre in a more exciting direction. I made this on weekends and holidays over the timespan of 6 weeks and edited most of each of the timelapses as I went to avoid an extreme backlog. I used a simple tripod and $8 intervalometer for most of the shots - no expensive equipment was used like dollies or steadicams. Often a small crowd would form as I was the tall white guy seemingly taking the same picture over and over again, or maybe a couple kids would run over and hang from my tripod as I was trying to get my shots, which, since the timing of the shots is important, sometimes would make me have to walk back to where I started and try again :)
Thanks for watching!
