The goal of coal mining is to obtain coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery. In Australia, "colliery" generally refers to an underground coal mine. Coal mining has had many developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunneling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyor, jacks and shearers. The Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain in the 18th century, and later spread to continental Europe and North America, was based on the availability of coal to power steam engines. International trade expanded exponentially when coal-fed steam engines were built for the railways and steamships. The new mines that grew up in the 19th century depended on men and children to work long hours in often dangerous working conditions.[1] There were many coalfields, but the oldest were in Newcastle and Durham, South Wales, Scotland, the Midlands, such as those at Coalbrookdale. The oldest continuously worked deep-mine in the United Kingdom is Tower Colliery in South Wales valleys in the heart of the South Wales coalfield. This colliery was developed in 1805, and its miners bought it out at the end of the 20th century, to prevent it from being closed. Tower Colliery was finally closed on 25 January 2008, although production continues at the Aberpergwm drift mine owned by Walter Energy. Coal was mined in America in the early 18th century, and commercial mining started around 1730 in Midlothian, Virginia.[2] Coal-cutting machines were invented in the 1880s. Before this invention, coal was mined from underground with a pick and shovel. By 1912, surface mining was conducted with steam shovels designed for coal mining.

Documentaire québécois. Près de 90 % du sous-sol québécois est constitué de roches précambriennes du Bouclier canadien (au nord du fleuve Saint-Laurent). L'autre partie est constituée essentiellement de roches paléozoïques, qui composent la Plate-Forme du Saint-Laurent, le pourtour du fleuve Saint-Laurent et les Appalaches, au sud du fleuve. Ces environnements offrent des perspectives intéressantes pour l'exploration. L'interprétation des roches du Précambrien et du Paléozoïque dans au Québec a considérablement évolué au cours des dernières décennies, grâce à une meilleure compréhension des processus géologiques et tectoniques. À cet effet, une subdivision révisée des provinces géologiques en sous-provinces a été développée. Ces subdivisions évoluent selon la disponibilité de nouvelles données géochronologiques, particulièrement en ce qui a trait aux événements orogéniques qui ont affecté le craton archéen, qui compose la majeure partie du Bouclier. La Province du Supérieur (4 à 2,5 Ga) occupe une grande partie du continent nord-américain et couvre le tiers du Québec, soit une superficie de 600 000 km². Cette province forme la partie centrale du Bouclier canadien. Elle est reconnue mondialement pour ses nombreux gisements de cuivre, d'or, de zinc, de nickel et d'argent. Plus récemment, on a fait d'importantes découvertes d'indices de diamant dans des kimberlites recoupant les roches de cette province. De plus, elle se subdivise en une douzaine de sous-provinces, dont la moitié est située au Québec. La plus connue est la sous-province de l'Abitibi, qui est la plus étendue des ceintures volcano-sédimentaires archéennes au monde, réputée pour ses gisements de cuivre, de zinc, d'argent et d'or. Les roches de la Province du Supérieur sont bordées à l'est par la Province de Churchill et au sud-est par la Province du Grenville. La Province de Churchill (2,1 à 1,75 Ga) couvre une superficie d'environ 150 000 km² dans le nord du Québec, au nord-est de la Province du Supérieur. Elle se caractérise par quatre zones : l'Orogène de l'Ungava (fosse de l'Ungava), qui borde la province du Supérieur au nord, est connu pour ses gisements de nickel-cuivre (dont ceux du camp minier de Raglan); l'Orogène du Nouveau-Québec (fosse du Labrador), qui borde à l'est la Province du Supérieur, possède un sous-sol qui renferme de grands gisements de fer ainsi que plusieurs gîtes de cuivre, de nickel et d'éléments du groupe platine (EGP); la Province de Rae (ou craton du Grand Nord), située entre les orogènes du Nouveau-Québec et des Torngat, contient des roches archéennes et paléoprotérozoïques (2,1 à 1,75 Ga) ainsi que des roches plutoniques mésoprotérozoïques (1,7 à 1,1 Ga); l'Orogène des Torngat (2,1 à 1,75 Ga), situé à l'est de la Province de Rae dont les roches sont recoupées par des kimberlites, recèle un potentiel diamantifère. La Province du Grenville (1,2 Ga à 950 Ma) couvre aussi une superficie de 600 000 km². Elle forme la limite sud-est de la Province du Supérieur et se divise en trois ceintures distinctes. La Province du Grenville est reconnue pour ses mines de fer et d'ilménite, pour son potentiel en minéraux industriels et, dans une moindre mesure, pour ses métaux usuels. Les Basses-Terres du Saint-Laurent (700 à 350 Ma) se sont développées à la fin du Protérozoïque et au Paléozoïque, avec la formation du graben du Saint-Laurent. Les Basses-Terres sont divisées en deux plates-formes, la plate-forme des Basses-Terres du Saint-Laurent et celle d'Anticosti. Elles reposent sur les roches de la Province du Grenville. La principale ressource exploitée est le calcaire. Deux intrusions de carbonatites, celle de Saint-Honoré et celle d'Oka, recèlent des gisements de niobium. Le Québec est le deuxième producteur mondial de ce métal rare. Au sud de la Province du Grenville, l'Orogène des Appalaches (650 à 350 Ma) s'est développé sur la marge du Bouclier canadien au cours du Paléozoïque. L'Orogène des Appalaches est divisé en trois ceintures et il est bordé à l'est par le bassin permo-carbonifère de Madeleine. Les imposantes ressources d'amiante et les gisements de cuivre de Mines Gaspé sont situés dans cette province géologique. De longues périodes de glaciation, qui datent du Quaternaire, ont affecté le territoire québécois. Ainsi, d'importants dépôts glaciaires recouvrent de grandes superficies dans le sud de la province et ces dépôts constituent d'importantes sources de sables et de graviers.

The mine is owned by Rio Tinto Group, an international mining and exploration company headquartered in the United Kingdom. The copper operations at Bingham Canyon Mine are managed through Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation which operates the mine, a concentrator plant, a smelter, and a refinery. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.6 miles (0.97 km) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (770 ha). It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 under the name Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine. The mine experienced a massive landslide in April of 2013 and a smaller slide in September of 2013. Udachnaya was discovered on June 15, 1955, just two days after the discovery of the diamond pipe Mir by Soviet geologist Vladimir Shchukin and his team. It is more than 600 metres (1,970 ft) deep, making it the third deepest open-pit mine in the world (after Bingham Canyon Mine and Chuquicamata). The nearby settlement of Udachny is named for the deposit. As of 2010, Udachnaya pipe is controlled by Russian diamond company Alrosa, which planned to halt open-pit mining in favor of underground mining in 2010. The mine has estimated reserves of 225.8 million carats of diamonds and an annual production capacity of 10.4 million carats Chuquicamata, or "Chuqui" as it is more familiarly known, is by excavated volume the biggest open pit copper mine in the world, located in the north of Chile, just outside of Calama, 215 km northeast of Antofagasta and 1,240 km north of the capital, Santiago. The mine is owned and operated by Codelco, a Chilean state enterprise, since the Chilean nationalization of copper in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Its depth of 850 metres (2,790 ft) makes it the second deepest open-pit mine in the world (after Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, USA). The Diavik Diamond Mine is a diamond mine in the North Slave Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada, about 300 kilometres (190 mi) north of Yellowknife. It has become an important part of the regional economy, employing 700, grossing C$100 million in sales, and producing approximately 7.5 million carats (1,500 kg (3,300 lb)) of diamonds annually.[2] The area was surveyed in 1992 and construction began in 2001, with production commencing in January 2003. It is connected by an ice road and Diavik Airport with a 5,235 ft (1,596 m) gravel runway regularly accommodating Boeing 737 jet aircraft. The Grasberg Mine is the largest gold mine and the third largest copper mine in the world. It is located in the province of Papua in Indonesia near Puncak Jaya, the highest mountain in Papua, and it has 19,500 employees. It is majority owned through a subsidiary by Freeport-McMoRan, which owns 90.64% of PT Freeport Indonesia, the principal operating subsidiary in Indonesia, including 9.36% owned through its wholly owned subsidiary, PT Indocopper Investama. The Government of Indonesia owns the remaining 9.36% of PT Freeport Indonesia. FCX operates under an agreement with the Government of Indonesia, which allows Freeport to conduct exploration, mining and production activities in a 24,700-acre area (Block A). It also conducts exploration activities in an approximate 500,000-acre area (Block B). All of Freeport's proven and probable mineral reserves and current mining operations are located in Block A. The 2006 production was 610,800 tonnes of copper; 58,474,392 grams of gold; and 174,458,971 grams of silver. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold.
