BREAKING NEWS - North and South Korea exchange fire across maritime border
The two Koreas traded live fire into the sea across their disputed maritime border on Monday, after Seoul said a North Korean military exercise dropped shells into South Korean waters. "Some of the shells fired by North Korea dropped in our area and our side responded with fire," a spokesman for the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) told AFP. There was no indication that either side was firing at any particular target. Officials on the South Korean border islands of Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong said residents were being evacuated to shelters as a precaution. The North Korean live fire exercise began at 12:15 pm (0315 GMT) and the South began responding with its own volley of artillery shells within 30 minutes. "For the moment, both sides are firing into the sea," the JCS spokesman said. North Korea regularly conducts live-fire drills but, in an unusual move, it had notified the South of Monday's exercise in advance. The JCS had immediately warned it would respond in the event of any shells falling on its side of the border. The Yellow Sea boundary is an extremely sensitive region that has been the scene of brief but bloody clashes in the past. In November 2010, North Korea shelled Yeonpyeong island, killing four people and triggering concerns of a full-scale conflict. "The aim is to threaten us and rack up tension on the Yellow Sea border and the overall Korean peninsula," South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman Wi Yong-Seop told reporters before the North Korean drill began. "The fact that they sent a message to us indicates their hostile intention," Wi said. -- 'New form' of nuclear test -- The exchange of fire came a day after North Korea threatened to carry out a "new form" of nuclear test -- seen as a possible reference to efforts to build a nuclear warhead small enough to fit on a ballistic missile. Pyongyang has carried out a series of rocket and short-range missile launches in recent weeks, in a pointed protest at ongoing annual South Korea-US military exercises. On Wednesday it upped the ante by test-firing two mid-range ballistic missiles capable of striking Japan. It was the first medium-range missile launch since 2009 and coincided with a trilateral summit attended by the South, the United States and Japan that focused on presenting a united front to the dangers posed by Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions. UN resolutions prohibit the North from firing any ballistic missiles and the UN Security Council said it would consider taking "appropriate" action -- a response that triggered the North's "new" nuclear test threat. North Korea has conducted three nuclear tests, the most recent -- and most powerful -- in February last year. Most experts believe it is still some way from mastering the technology required to build a miniaturised warhead -- a development that would be seen as a game-changer in assessing the North's nuclear arms capabilities. The de-facto maritime boundary between the two Koreas -- the Northern Limit Line -- is not recognised by Pyongyang, which argues it was unilaterally drawn by US-led United Nations forces after the 1950-53 Korean War. North, South Korea Trade Artillery Fire Across Maritime Border | BREAKING NEWS - 31 MARCH 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS North and South Korea have exchanged fire across the disputed western maritime border, South Korea has said. North Korea announced early on Monday that it would hold live-fire drills in seven parts of the border area. South Korea says it returned fire after North Korean shells landed in its territorial waters. The area has been a flashpoint between the two Koreas. In late 2010, four South Koreans were killed on a border island by North Korean artillery fire. Earlier that year, a South Korean warship sank near the disputed border with the loss of 46 lives. Seoul says Pyongyang torpedoed the vessel but North Korea denies any role in the incident. The UN drew the western border after the Korean War, but North Korea has never recognised it. Missile tests The live-fire exercises were announced by North Korea in a faxed message from its military to the South's navy. The exercises would take place in seven border areas, the message said. South Korean had warned of immediate retaliation if any ordinance crossed the border. In November 2010, North Korea fired shells at the border island of Yeonpyeong, killing two marines and two civilians. It said it was responded to South Korean military exercises in the area. The latest incident comes days after North Korea test-fired two medium-range Nodong missiles over the sea, its first such launch since 2009. Late last week, the UN Security Council condemned the launch and said it was considering an "appropriate response". That launch followed a series of short-range missile tests, seen as a response to the current US-South Korea annual military exercises. Over the weekend, North Korea also threatened to conduct a "new form" of nuclear test. ARIRANG NEWS 16:00 Two Koreas exchange fire at maritime border
Artillery fire was exchanged between the two Koreas on Monday afternoon. In the midst of live-fire drills, a North Korean artillery shell landed south of the inter-Korean maritime border. The South Korean military responded by firing back across Northern Limit Line. For the details, let's go live to our correspondent Hwang Sung-hee at the Arirang News Center. Sung-hee, what's the latest? The exchange of fire between the two Koreas came to an end about two hours ago. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff says it all began at a little past noon on Monday... when North Korea fired hundreds of artillery shells in waters north of the Northern Limit Line. Several of those shells fell south of the NLL in South Korean waters near Baengnyeong Island. A spokesperson for the Joint Chiefs of Staff said the South Korean military shot around 50 artillery shells back across the NLL in response using K-9 self-propelled howitzers. Residents of South Korea's border island were told to take cover in shelters. North Korea had notified South Korea of its plans to conduct live-fire drills this morning, announcing they would carry out exercises in seven West Sea border regions, north of the NLL. It had not given a specific time for the planned exercise, but demanded that Seoul keep its vessels out of the training zone. How is the South Korean military now preparing for the event of another incident? South Korea's defense ministry took the unusual warning from its neighbor this morning as a hostile threat. This is the first time in recent history that the North has conducted a live-fire drill in all seven West Sea border regions. It's also the first time it's informed the South of the exercise ahead of time. During a press briefing this morning, the vice defense ministry spokesman had said South Korea will keep close watch for possible clashes,... as they believe the North is attempting to raise tensions near the western maritime border. The South Korean military has activated crisis management operations and has deployed naval convoys near the NLL to cope with any contingencies. Officials in Seoul have been on high alert,... and it's worth mentioning that this is not the first time the North has fired artillery shells this direction. In 2010, North Korea launched artillery strikes on a South Korean border island, killing four. Thank you for your report, Sung-hee. That was Arirang News' Hwang Sung-hee with the latest on North Korea's live fire drills.- published: 31 Mar 2014

PRIME TIME NEWS 22:00 Two Koreas exchange fire at maritime border
We begin this evening with the latest skirmish between the two Koreas. Seoul and Pyongyang exchanged fire across the western maritime border Monday..., after the North's artillery shells fell into waters in the South. For more on the renewed tensions on the Korean peninsula... we go live to our correspondent Hwang Sung-hee at the Arirang News Center. Sung-hee, what can you tell us? The exchange of fire between the two Koreas came to an end at about 3:30 p.m. Korea time. It all began a little past noon on this Monday after North Korea began live-fire drills in seven West Sea border regions, north of the Northern Limit Line. South Korea's defense ministry said North Korea fired around 500 artillery shells in waters north of the NLL and that some 100 of those shells fell south of the maritime border in South Korean waters near Baengnyeongdo Island. In response, the South Korean military shot around 300 artillery shells back across the NLL using K-9 self-propelled howitzers. Thousands of residents on South Korea's border islands were sent into shelters for cover. North Korea had notified South Korea of its plans to conduct live-fire drills this morning, not giving a specific time for the planned exercise, but demanding that Seoul keep its vessels out of the training zone. We hear that the South Korean military is still on high alert... in case of follow-up provocations from the North? Pyongyang says Monday's drills were part of its regular military exercises but South Korea's defense ministry called it a pre-planned provocation. This is the first time in recent history that the North has conducted a live-fire drill in all seven West Sea border regions. It's also the first time it's informed the South of the exercise ahead of time. The ministry said the South Korean military will work closely with the United States and keep close watch for possible clashes. The South Korean military has activated crisis management operations and has deployed naval convoys near the NLL to cope with any contingencies. South Korea's presidential National Security Council convened an emergency meeting this evening. What was discussed? The standing committee of South Korea's National Security Council was briefed on the situation by the defense ministry and discussed the North's motives behind its latest provocations. The committee, headed by the top presidential security adviser Kim Jang-soo, talked about the possibility of Pyongyang's further provocations and Seoul's plans for a strong and firm response when needed. The South Korean government will take measures to protect the safety of South Koreans not only near the western maritime border, but also near the demilitarized zone. It's worth mentioning that this is not the first time the North has fired artillery shells this direction. In 2010, North Korea launched artillery strikes on a South Korean border island, killing four people. Thank you for your report, Sung-hee. That was Arirang News' Hwang Sung-hee with the latest on North Korea's live fire drills.- published: 31 Mar 2014
