RIDDLE OF STEEL: Secrets of the Viking Sword (720p)
WATCH PLAYLIST https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kBNT5t5rd8&list;=PLRPW3IFnQj1x17hRePWRYDaq7DEajSW98 The Viking sword was the primary weapon of the Viking. It was a development of the Roman spatha, evolving out of the Migration Period sword in the 8th century, and into the classical knightly sword in the 11th century with the emergence of larger cross-guards. The Viking swords were pattern welded which gave the blade extra strength as the core was made of springy iron and edge of hard steel. Of particular note is the "Ulfberht" subset, which used steel of higher purity and carbon content than its peers in the region that may have been imported in ingot. Blade length varied from 71 to 84 centimetres. Early examples have single, deep, wide fullers running the full length of the blade. Later examples have multiple narrow fullers. A fuller reduces the weight of the blade without compromising its strength. This weight reduction would allow the wielder to swing faster and harder strokes. Later swords also had more tapered points for increased effectiveness against chain mail. All have short single-handed hilts with pyramid, lobed or cocked-hat style pommels. Pommels were made of iron and were heavier than on the earlier Migration Period sword.- published: 01 Dec 2013

Leif Ericson: Viking Explorer of the New World▕ March of the Titans
Leif Ericson: Viking Explorer of the New World▕ March of the Titans: A History of the White Race Leif Ericsson (also spelled Eriksson) the Lucky 970-1020, was a Viking Norse explorer. The first European to venture to North America. In the 11th century the Norseman arriving at a place he called "Vinland." Archaeologists have uncovered Viking ruins in Newfoundland, Canada. Belonging to the Icelandic Old Norse race, Ericson pioneered the establishment of the Vinland Settlement which is across the Labrador and Newfoundland communities in Canada. Erik the Red Leif was born in Iceland in 970 AD. His father, Erik Thordvalsson (Erik the Red), was a Norse explorer from Norway. In 986 AD, he moved his family to Greenland. During their stay in the country, Erik discovered two Norse colonies -- the Eastern and Western settlements. Erik traditionally named the colonies, "Landnama" and "Eiriks Saga Rauda." Early as an adult, Leif married an Icelandic woman who lived in Greenland named Thorgunna. The couple had one child whose name was Thorkell Leifson. After years of residing in Greenland, Leif and his own family decided to settle down in Norway. Just like many other Norsemen during his time, Leif converted to Christianity with the blessings of King Olaf I of Norway. Leif returned to Greenland after purchasing a "Bjarni Herjolfsson" ship for his 35 men. This ship was used during Leif's explorations across the western boundaries of Canada and Greenland. In the year 1003, Leif led the "Saga of the Greenlanders" which coincided with the Bjani's route towards the Northern coastal areas. A Great Commission Leif made landfall at the Helluland ("Land of the Stones") which was covered with flat solid rock formations. He renamed the Land of the Stones "Baffin Island" prior to his next landfall. Leif and his crew of 35 left the Markland ("Labrador Island") and made landfall at Leifsbudir, an Icelandic term for "Leif's storage houses." The name was suggested by his crew after finding out that they actually landed in his hometown. On his return from his three voyages, he received orders from Olaf I that he should go back to Greenland in order to spread Christianity across the country. He stayed with Erik at the remote town of Brattahild. Leif died in 1020. There isn't much detail about how he died, and his death became the subject of many debates among historians. Nordic Settlement Based on a 1960 research conducted by Icelandic archeologists Anne and Helge Ingstad, Leif secretly discovered a Norse settlement along Newfoundland. The settlement was named "Le Anse Aux Meadows," which appeared to be the Canadian counterpart of the Leifsbudir. In 1964, the US Congress issued a proclamation stating the declaration of October 9 as "Leif Ericson Day." During the first Leif Ericson Day celebration, the US Immigration authorities renewed their close ties with Norway in remembrance of the Norwegian "Restauration" ship's landfall in the New York City Harbor on October 9, 1825. Leif is a world-renowned explorer from Greenland. Although born Icelandic, Leif's expeditions brought prominence to Greenland as a country of great explorers. Leif also played a very significant role in expanding Christianity in Greenland. Leif's heroic exploits in leading his men during the Viking explorations led to the settlement of the Norse at Vinland, which is now the Canadian Labrador town.. http://totallyhistory.com/leif-ericson/- published: 24 Oct 2013

The Vikings : Europes Most Feared Warriors
The Vikings : Europes Most Feared Warriors
This show looks at the Viking, fearsome warriors from Denmark and Norway who burst upon Western Europe, raiding and plundering at the end of the 8th century. They first targeted coastal monasteries, but later they constructed magnificent ships that could sail up rivers and sack inland towns. The Vikings (from Old Norse víkingr) were seafaring north Germanic people who raided, traded, explored, and settled in wide areas of Europe, Asia, and the North Atlantic islands from the late 8th to the mid-11th centuries. The Vikings employed wooden longships with wide, shallow-draft hulls, allowing navigation in rough seas or in shallow river waters. The ships could be landed on beaches, and their light weight enabled them to be hauled over portages. These versatile ships allowed the Vikings to travel as far east as Constantinople and the Volga River in Russia, as far west as Iceland, Greenland, and Newfoundland, and as far south as Nekor. This period of Viking expansion, known as the Viking Age, constitutes an important element of the medieval history of Scandinavia, Great Britain, Ireland, Russia, and the rest of Europe. Popular conceptions of the Vikings often differ from the complex picture that emerges from archaeology and written sources. A romanticised picture of Vikings as noble savages began to take root in the 18th century, and this developed and became widely propagated during the 19th-century Viking revival. The received views of the Vikings as violent brutes or intrepid adventurers owe much to the modern Viking myth that had taken shape by the early 20th century. Current popular representations are typically highly clichéd, presenting the Vikings as familiar caricatures. The Vikings were known as Ascomanni, ashmen, by the Germans, Lochlanach (Norse) by the Gaels and Dene (Danes) by the Anglo-Saxons. The Slavs, the Arabs and the Byzantines knew them as the Rus' or Rhōs, probably derived from various uses of rōþs-, i.e., "related to rowing" or derived from the area of Roslagen in east-central Sweden, where most of the Vikings who visited the Slavic lands came from. Archaeologists[who?] and historians[who?] of today believe that these Scandinavian settlements in the Slavic lands formed the names of the countries Russia and Belarus. The modern day name for Sweden in several neighboring countries is possibly derived from rōþs-, Ruotsi in Finnish and Rootsi in Estonian. The Slavs and the Byzantines also called them Varangians (ON: Væringjar, meaning sworn men from var- "pledge, faith," related to Old English wær "agreement, treaty, promise," Old High German wara "faithfulness"). Scandinavian bodyguards of the Byzantine emperors were known as the Varangian Guard.- published: 08 Dec 2013

The song tells of Odin. This time I chose to actually „sing", in Swedish and with actual lyrics. A suggestion for this song: Listen to it right after „Einherjer", they connect into one big song, which is the purpose of my Viking songs. I will compose many more and connect them all into a 1 hour long video at the end. =) It will take a long time though until that's ready.^^ Here are the lyrics and the translation: Lyrics written and „sung" by myself, translated into Swedish by Mattias Sätervi. Om en ändlös vinter, drömmer han om I en svart sal sitter han och väntar på frosten Om jordens stillhet, drömmer han om Hans spjut lyfts högt och han befaller snön att täcka landet I hans dröm ser han en vinter utan vår, och tronen i hans sal är frusen Och världens andetag reser sig svagt - Of an endless winter he dreams In a black hall he sits and awaits the frost Of the earth's stillness he dreams His spear raised high he commands the snow to cover the land In his dream he sees a winter without spring and the throne in his hall is frozen And the world's breath grows weary Two more notes: People were asking me how would I know what kind of music the Vikings really made, since they are gone since centuries. But I don't claim to know that, what I do is writing ABOUT Vikings.^^ I don't know what they played 1000 years ago, I simply compose music that I personally see fitting to tell tales about them. I hope that clears up the misunderstanding.^^ The second note is about my „singing" in this song: I'm from Switzerland and don't have real knowledge of Swedish, however our languages have many similarities so I understand a lot without really having to learn Swedish. My friend Mattias was teaching me the pronunciation, but of course I don't sound like a native Swedish person, so if you're from Sweden and thought my way of talking seemed odd: Of course it is. xD Composed and arranged 100% by myself on keyboard, as always. The artwork is a wallpaper from „The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim", to which all the credits go of course. If you don't know it already you should definitely check it out. I will certainly make more Viking songs and listen to them while I visit Skyrim.^^ © All audio material is copyrighted by Adrian von Ziegler.
