"Shock and Awe" The Beginning of the 2003 Invasion of Iraq (CNN Live Coverage)
I can't stop the ads. I wish I could. This is a recording I made of CNN's coverage of the "Shock and Awe" campaign conducted at that time. I copied this off of my VHS tape. I'm merely uploading this for historical purposes. Most tapes I see of this are only about ten minutes long. This is just over two hours. It covers from 8:19 PM to around 10:30 PM (Baghdad local time). The "Shock and Awe" campaign starts at 9:00 PM or about 40:30 . This video includes post-bombing statements from Secretary of the State Donald Rumsfeld, and Air Force General, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Richard Myers among others. 1:17:22 This is only for historical purposes. It is in no way meant to glorify, or denounce these events. I'm not uploading this for monetary gain. I'm merely sharing this with others who may wish to see it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In his memoir, "Decision Points," Bush wrote about how he felt sick to his stomach when he found there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. "I felt terrible about it," Bush stated in 2010. "On the other hand, those reports did point out that Saddam Hussein was very dangerous, that he had the capacity to make weapons. I'm convinced that if he were still in power today, the world would be a lot worse off."- published: 20 Mar 2013

Some 60 people may have also been wounded in the explosions, reports say. The deadliest single attack, in which seven people died, struck a busy market in the south of the city. In an extended surge of sectarian violence, 759 people died in December alone. More than 650 have died so far in January, said the AFP news agency. The violence has not reached this level since 2007, at the peak of sectarian conflict. No group claimed immediate responsibility for Monday's attacks but previous similar bombings have been widely blamed on Sunni insurgents seeking to undermine the Shia-led government of Nouri Maliki. However, two of Monday's blasts - which reportedly numbered between five and seven - targeted Sunni districts. Shia districts in Jadida, Hurriya and Bayaa were among those hit, said AFP. The bomb attacks come against the background of continuing violence in the western province of Anbar, where al-Qaeda-linked militants control the city of Falluja and parts of Ramadi. Fighting was again reported around the two cities on Monday. More than 70 people were killed in bomb blasts in central Iraq, including the capital, on 15 January. The deadliest attack took place in Baghdad's Shiite northern Shaab neighborhood, when two parked car bombs exploded simultaneously near a restaurant and a tea house. Officials say those blasts killed 10 people and wounded 26. Authorities said that a parked car bomb ripped through in capital's Shiite eastern district of Sadr City, killing five and wounding 10. Another bombing killed three civilians and wounded six in a commercial area in the central Bab al-Muadham neighborhood, officials said. Two other bombings killed two civilians and wounded 13, police said. Medical officials confirmed the causality figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information. The attacks come as Iraqi security forces are besieging two key cities country's western Anbar province after they were taken over by militants from al-Qaida's local branch, known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant. Clashes have been taking place since Monday in Anbar's provincial capital, Ramadi, and nearby Fallujah between al-Qaida militants and pro-government Sunni tribesmen. The Baghdad bombings could be seen as an attempt by militants to distract security forces. Earlier on Sunday, a senior Iraqi military commander said that it will take a few days to fully dislodge al-Qaida-linked fighters from two key western cities. Lt. Gen. Rasheed Fleih, who leads the Anbar Military Command, told the state television Sunday that "two to three days" are needed to push the militants out of Fallujah and parts of Ramadi. Fleih added that pro-government Sunni tribes are leading the operations while the army only is offering aerial cover and logistics on the ground. He didn't elaborate on the operations. "The quiet and safe life that is sought by the Anbaris will not be completely restored before few hours or two to three days, God willing," Fleih said. Residents say it has been quiet since Saturday night in Fallujah, where militants still control the center of the city. Sporadic clashes took place Sunday in and around Ramadi. The residents spoke on condition of anonymity for their safety. Ramadi was a stronghold of Sunni insurgents during the U.S.-led war. Al-Qaida militants largely took both cities over last week and have been fending off incursions by government forces there since. Bikes Over Baghdad Trailer
This isn’t a typical action sports film of guys doing insane tricks in remote locations (though it has that), this isn’t a story about the sacrifices our soldiers make day in and day out (though that is in there as well), and this isn’t a story of a group of friends going on an adventure (though, again, there is that). This is a story about what happens when people give for the good of others. When people put their own safety aside to make someone’s life a little better, and how selflessness can change lives.
Bikes over Baghdad ended up traveling to the middle east six seperate times with each tour roughly two weeks in length. We faced extreme conditions, mortar rounds, IED’s, injury, exhaustion and more, but we never missed a show. And while our team read like a who’s who of action sports, egos were put aside and nothing short of a series of miracles were performed.
It seems like a stretch to say riding BMX bikes for the troops could actually change their lives, but this film will show just how special of an experience this was for thousands serving in the Middle East, and hopefully it’ll serve as a reminder that we all have the power to initiate change in our own unique way.
This is Bikes over Baghdad.

HELLO BAGHDAD (2 MINUTES)
When journalist Paulien Bakker and photographer Marieke van der Velden visited Baghdad again for a report they noticed that Iraq is so much more than what we see of it in the newspapers and on television.
The media focuses exclusively on men with rifles in pickup trucks and bomb blasts. But when you turn the camera just a few degrees away from these images, you can see that life goes on despite the violence and the presence of foreign troops.
The film and photoseries shows a much neglected side of Baghdad.
These movies was shown in Baghdad during TED X Baghdad www.tedxbaghdad.com

Car bombing kills 9 civilians in Iraqi capital For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to http://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS A car bomb has killed at least nine people and wounded others at a bus station in central Baghdad. The bomb went off on Sunday morning outside the station in the Allawi area, local police said. Last Thursday, a suicide bomber blew himself up among army recruits in the same area, killing 23 people. Political tensions and violence have escalated in Iraq. The UN says 2013 was the deadliest year for five years, with more than 8,800 people killed. No group has yet admitted carrying out the bus station attack. The violence comes days after the UN's envoy to Iraq warned of a "critical humanitarian situation" in Anbar province, as troops prepare to launch a major assault against al-Qaeda-linked militants in Falluja. Correspondents say a government drive to restore control of the two predominantly Sunni cities of Falluja and Ramadi is being seen by many Sunnis as an attempt at domination and oppression, and is taking Iraq back to the brink of a sectarian civil war. The attacks in the Iraqi capital coincided with a visit by UN chief Ban Ki-moon during which he expressed concern over Iraq's spiralling bloodshed and urged Iraq's leaders to deal with its underlying causes. As yet, no group has claimed responsibility for the latest string of bombings but the violence comes as Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki battles to contain Islamist militants in the west of the country. Thousands of people have already reportedly fled Fallujah, as government troops prepare to launch a major military offensive to retake the predominantly Sunni city. Earlier this week, the UN warned of a critical humanitarian crisis in Iraq's western Anbar region amid growing fears that Iraq could tip back into a sectarian war. That slide is largely being blamed on the war in Syria which is said to be inflaming instability across the region.
