History of Interrupts and Virtual Interrupt Coalescing

Interrupts have been used in computers since early days of electronic computing. In this video, Irfan Ahmad recalls the history of interrupts including surprising facts about when and how interrupts started to become used early on. (Interesting, four Turing Laureates were, at one time or another, associated with the early development of interrupts in computers including: Edsger W. Dijkstra, John McArthy, Fernando J. Corbató and Butler W. Lampson.) Irfan then leads into his recent work at VMware. This invention utilizes some special properties peculiar to storage i/o that lend to novel optimizations that dramatically improve the efficiency of interrupts, 60 years after their invention. This was originally presented at USENIX Annual Technical Conference '11 where this talk was well received. Credit to the fabulous USENIX team for capturing the video and making it available.

The very first ALGOL 60 compiler was delivered by Edsger W. Dijkstra and Jaap Zonneveld at August 24, 1960.This was a milestone in the history of compiler construction.
