Mitochondria - Jodi Nunnari (UC Davis)
Dr. Nunnari explains that mitochondria are derived from prokaryotes and played a pivotal role in the evolution of eukaryotes. In an aerobic environment, mitochondria produce energy, in the form of ATP. This energy allowed eukaryotes to develop into complex cells and organisms. Mitochondria are also fascinating because they have retained their own genome and are dynamic organelles that communicate with other compartments in the eukaryotic cell. http://www.ibiology.org/ibioeducation/exploring-biology/cell-bio/organelles/mitochondria.html- published: 22 Oct 2013

Minding My Mitochondria Abstract: I have progressive Multiple Sclerosis and was confined to a tilt recline wheelchair. A professor of medicine, I studied the basic science literature about progressive brain diseases like Parkinsons, Alzheimers and Huntingtons, the nutritional requirements of the brain and the Paleo Diet. Using what I learned, I created a modified Paleo Diet to maximize the nutrition for my mitochondria, my cells and my brain. Just 9 months after this new way of eating, I was able to bicycle 18 miles. I tell my personal story as I teach the biology of what our cells need to thrive, why a structured Paleo Diet provides the most nutrition per calorie of any diets and how to eat for maximal health of our mitochondria, our cells and our brains and bodies. My clinical trial, using the Paleo Diet, has remarkably positive results. Terry Wahls, M.D. Bio: Dr. Terry Wahls is a clinical professor at the University of Iowa. Progressive multiple sclerosis, confined her to a wheelchair for years however, using a Paleo Diet, Dr. Wahls restored her health and now bikes to work. She is the author of Minding My Mitochondria. The Powers of Ten: Lymphocyte
Celebrating the landmark 1977 Eames film, Powers of Ten™, The Powers Project invited 40 innovative artists from around the world to produce original segments for each power of ten using a variety of digital and film techniques. This new, collaborative homage playfully transplants the film’s journey from the physical universe to a unique, imagined universe of graphic abstractions.
In this segment designed by MRK, we see 10 to the power of minus 5. We travel through a capillary into a world of red and white blood cells, to find a lone lymphocyte whose membrane we penetrate to finally reach its porous nucleus.

Mitochondrial Mutations in Aging - Dr. Aubrey de Grey
In this video, SRF Chief Science Officer Dr. Aubrey de Grey discusses mitochondrial mutations, their role in aging, and the SENS approach to combatting their deleterious effects. Dr. de Grey opens his lecture by describing the structure of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in humans. In particular, he explains that only thirteen protein-encoding mitochondrial genes actually reside in mitochondria. Throughout the course of human evolution, over a thousand other mitochondrial genes have migrated to the nuclear genome. Next, he explains the major theories developed between the 1970 and the present that aimed to explain the role of mtDNA mutations in aging. During his discussion of the most recent theoretical ground, Dr. de Grey explains his own contribution to the field: an alternative hypothesis to explain how clonal expansion of mutant mitochondria might occur. He then turns to therapeutic strategies and discusses the three main mechanisms by which scientists might intervene in mitochondrial aging. Dr. de Grey closes by describing the mechanism SRF finds most promising: inserting the thirteen protein-encoding mitochondrial genes into the nucleus modified in such a way that the corresponding RNA transcripts or protein-products can be imported into the mitochondria.
