Chuck Willis - What You Gonna Do When Your Baby Leaves You (Atlantic EP 591)
also containing ''Juanita'', ''Kansas City Woman'', ''It's Too Late'' issued on Atlantic in 195?
Biography by Bill Dahl
There were two distinct sides to Chuck Willis. In addition to being a convincing blues shouter, the Atlanta-born Willis harbored a vulnerable blues balladeer side. In addition, he was a masterful songwriter who penned some of the most distinctive R&B; numbers of the 1950s. He can't be granted principal credit for his 1957 smash adaptation of "C.C. Rider," an irresistible update of a classic folk-blues, but Willis did write such gems as "I Feel So Bad" (later covered by Elvis Presley, Little Milton, and Otis Rush), the anguished ballads "Don't Deceive Me (Please Don't Go)" and "It's Too Late" (the latter attracting covers by Buddy Holly, Charlie Rich, and Otis Redding) and his swan song, "Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes."
Harold Willis (he adopted Chuck as a stage handle) received his early training singing at YMCA-sponsored "Teenage Canteens" in Atlanta and fronting the combos of local bandleaders Roy Mays and Red McAllister. Powerful DJ Zenas "Daddy" Sears took an interest in the young vocalist's career, hooking him up with Columbia Records in 1951. After a solitary single for the major firm, Willis was shuttled over to its recently reactivated OKeh R&B; subsidiary.
In 1952, he crashed the national R&B; lists for OKeh with a typically plaintive ballad, "My Story," swiftly encoring on the hit parade with a gentle cover of Fats Domino's "Goin' to the River" and his own "Don't Deceive Me" the next year and "You're Still My Baby" and the surging Latin-beat "I Feel So Bad" in 1954. Willis also penned a heart-tugging chart-topper for Ruth Brown that year, "Oh What a Dream."
Willis moved over to Atlantic Records in 1956 and immediately enjoyed another round of hits with "It's Too Late" and "Juanita." Atlantic strove mightily to cross Willis over into pop territory, inserting an exotic steel guitar at one session and chirpy choirs on several more. The strategy eventually worked when his 1957 revival of the ancient "C.C. Rider" proved the perfect number to do the "Stroll" to; American Bandstand gave the track a big push, and Willis had his first R&B; number one hit as well as a huge pop seller (Gene "Daddy G" Barge's magnificent sax solo likely aided its ascent).
Barge returned for Willis's similar follow-up, "Betty and Dupree," which also did well for him. But the turban-wearing crooner's time was growing short -- he had long suffered from ulcers prior to his 1958 death from peritonitis. Much has been made of the ironic title of his last hit, the touching "What Am I Living For," but it was no more a clue to his impending demise than its flip, the joyous "Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes." Both tracks became massive hits upon the singer's death, and his posthumous roll continued with "My Life" and a powerful "Keep A-Driving" later that year.

Red Flag - Russian Radio (1989) HQ
Synthpop duo Red Flag -- brothers Chris and Mark Reynolds -- were originally Liverpool natives before moving to San Diego in the mid-'70s.
Comprised of siblings Mark and Chris Reynolds, Red Flag released a dozen albums between 1988 and 2002, and nearly twice that many singles and EPs. The duo said their music was inspired by bands like Depeche Mode and the Cure, describing their sound as “a blend of synthpop, new age, & ambient.”
The brothers first started playing electronic music in 1982, when Mark Reynolds bought a Roland Juno-60 synthesizer over a guitar on a trip to a music store. The first song they recorded, "Distant Memories," under the name Shades of May, was selected for a compilation album, Local Heroes, by San Diego radio station 91X in 1984.
Signed to Enigma Records in 1988, the LP Naïve Art (produced by Paul Robb of Information Society), released the following year, earned them two top ten hits on Billboard’s Dance Charts (“Russian Radio” and “If I Ever”), as well as an appearance on American Bandstand and opening slots on tour with Devo and Thomas Dolby.
Red Flag's 2002 remix album Who Are the Skulls? featured other synthpop artists such as Information Society's Paul Robb, Cosmicity, Provision, and Rob Rowe of Cause & Effect. The concept of the album was to organize a project in answer to the many requests from other remixers to work with the band.
Following the closure of Enigma, Red Flag briefly recorded for I.R.S., who released the album Machines in 1992. The duo then decided to form their own label, Plan B Records, to supervise and market their work.
In late 2001, Red Flag released Codebreaker T133, a pure electronica dance album entirely recorded and programmed to the tempo of 133 bpm (beats per minute). On March 31st, 2002, the Red Flag song “I See You” was featured on MTV’s Road Rules/Real World Battle Of The Sexes.
Among their last area gigs were Club Xanth on 30th Street (May 12th ‘02) and ‘Canes (April 13th ’02), where they opened for former Bauhaus and Love And Rockets guitarist Daniel Ash.
Red Flag fan Jerome Nivolosi attended the ‘Canes gig and said “Mark was looking kind of worn out and…not well at the time. He’d shaved his head and seemed like he’d lost a lot of weight since the last time I saw them at the Troubador [L.A.], just a few months before that. My friends and I were talking about it…we wondered if maybe he was on chemo[therapy], whether he might have cancer or something.”
Mark Reynolds passed away in his home on 2nd Avenue on Monday, April 7th 2003, reportedly from complications related to respiratory failure, though it was later reported to have been a suicide. Reynolds’ wife said in a statement "We are all shocked and deeply saddened by this unexpected loss. Mark was a wonderful person, a loving husband and a talented and gifted musician. He will be missed terribly. I’m sorry it has taken me this long to let you know, but I hope you can understand how terribly difficult this has been for me and our family."
Mark’s death brought operations to a halt until 2007, when Chris released Born Again. Since then, he has played a handful of shows and is now looking to return to music full time. A revived version of Red Flag performed for the first time in San Diego since 2002 on April 22, 2009, at the House of Blues.
For Reynolds the decision to use the Red Flag name wasn’t taken lightly. “It’s something I still think about; it was a hard choice. But, I was Red Flag too, and in the long run, I think it would be a disservice to the music and all that we’d built up to use something else.”
In 2010, Reynolds began planning a ten CD Red Flag box set, complete with updated versions of early hits. New tracks that year included “Glass Spider” (for an edition of the Staring at the Sun local compilation series) and a cover of Judas Priest’s “Hell Bent For Leather.”
A change in the current edition of Red Flag is the use of live musicians. “It’s an electronic band, so using computers I could do it all alone, but I get lonely by myself up there,” he joked. “Besides, there’s no way that a bass player, for example, could play what’s on the records without computers involved, as some tracks have three simultaneous lines interlinked. But having live musicians adds something that’s both visually appealing and makes the sound more epic.”
“In starting over, I’m being very selective about the shows I’ll play. I have a family, and touring is grueling.”

Kenneth Copeland - Founding Trustee - ICFM
Brother Kenneth Copeland is a founding trustee of International Convention of Faith Ministries.
In May 1967, Kenneth Copeland was walking along the bed of the Arkansas River in Tulsa, Oklahoma, when the Lord dropped the vision of the ministry into his heart: to preach the gospel to the nations—a call that would include using every available voice to preach the uncompromised message of faith to meet the needs of people worldwide.
It all started though with simple steps of obedience and faith, walking in love and the integrity of God’s Word.
In 1957 at 20 years of age, with a hit record, Pledge of Love, at #14 on the national charts and #1 on the local charts Kenneth looked to be on his way to a successful singing career appearing on American Bandstand and featured next to Ricky Nelson in Dig Magazine. But God had other plans. He met Gloria and asked her to marry him on their first date. She said yes. At that time, they lived in a rented apartment with a rollaway bed, coffeepot they cooked in and kept their food on the porch to keep it cold. Things were not abundant but as Gloria sat reading a Bible given to Kenneth from his mother one day she prayed, “God, take my life and do something with it.” Shortly thereafter Kenneth became a Christian and five years later at the age of 30 he obeyed God, packed up his family, and moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to enroll at Oral Roberts University in spring of 1967.
Kenneth Copeland Ministries Staff
Kenneth applied to be Oral Roberts’ co-pilot and he was made part of the flight crew attending all the tent meetings and crusades. It was during this time that he was learning exponentially through on-the-job training. Just a few months after Kenneth worked for Oral, God called him to start his own ministry and on September 7, 1967, Kenneth Copeland Ministries was birthed.
“Kenneth Copeland Ministries was birthed out of love for the people and a commitment to bring people the Word,” states Kenneth Copeland. “Our lives are totally wrapped up in ministering to the people. When we say, “We’re here for you.” we mean it to this point—everything we do, everything we preach, every broadcast we come on, everywhere we minister, everything we say and do is prayed, engineered, designed to minister to the people…. God called us to take His message of love and faith to the whole world. We care about you and we want to help you find the answers you need in God’s Word.
Kellie Copeland Swisher, Kenneth and Gloria’s daughter, believes that is what sets Kenneth and Gloria apart. “People all the time use the phrases ‘Word church,’ ‘Word people,’ ‘Word movement.’” states Kellie. “Forty years ago, faith was ambiguous. It wasn’t a movement. To us, it was just a way of life. Mom and Dad said, ‘If we see it in the Word, we’re going to form our life around that. We’re going to change our life to fit the Word.’ It’s the way we live our life. Every decision they make is formed around the Word.”
“Integrity and integrity in God’s Word,” continues John Copeland, son and CEO of KCM. “That’s what this ministry has stood on for 40 years and will stand on for the next 40 years. People have said word of faith teaches that you don’t ever have problems and that’s just not true. Our families have been faced with adversities. Sometimes you just go through something. It’s not that you don’t face obstacles and don’t face adversities, it’s what you do when you are faced with those adversities. How do you handle yourself, what do you do? You have a choice. And we were raised not to just take it but to fight it, stand against it, believe God and the integrity of His Word and you will come out on the other side.”
Kenneth and Gloria have learned the principle of connecting to God in faith. By the Lord’s blessing, they have taught their children, grandchildren and Partners the world over the power of connecting with God and His Word every day in every way in their life, making for a great heritage and legacy.

Truth be told, "BETTER THAN HOLLYWOOD” series 106 part I the master sessions by Marvin Bugalu Smith

I'm sitting in my new recording studio with Cubase 48 track 64 bit listing to last night's concert with John Esposito and Lew Scott and of course Baba Marvin Bugalu Smith Andrew Greeney Steve Habib Jan Jurgielewicz IV with two member's from Bard collage and this series 106 is completely off the hook so stay tuned for it today
Many years ago in Engelwood,NJ, I met Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith, his brother Earl "BUSTER" Smith and Bobby Smith. Marvin played the drums differently than anyone I have ever heard. His older brother "BUSTER" was a great teacher of Marvin's and also a known Jazz drummer working with Eric Dolphy, Sun Ra and so many others. Buster influenced his younger brother Marvin and helped Marvin develop a great drumming gift that few of us have. Marvin is like THE WIND, THE EARTH, THE SUN, THE RAIN, THE OCEAN, FIRE,SPACE,SILENCE,STATIC,PASSION,COMPASSION,CONSTANT MOTION, HE LOOKS LIKE THE NUMBER 8 which when looked at is round, circle on top of circle. He expresses himself through 5's, 6's,7's and 8's but continues to advance time in quarters, fourths with accents of three but also five. He plays without resolving things bar after bar. He sometimes breaths twelve bars at a time before he powerfully accents in a gentle but also explosive way. You can feel his soul. Marvin IS THE MUSIC. He creates flow because he is FLOW. Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith is a musical composer using the drums as his harmonic voice. Marvin draws all musicians that perform with him into a world of LOVE and PEACE. It is a world of healing musical medicine. I know, because when I met Marvin, I was medically ill with Heart Disease,Cancer, Chronic Osteomylitis and many other medical complications. Listening to him play was medicine in itself. His sound vibration is unique. Marvin draws souns out of his drums that I've never heard before. If you listen carefully, you'll be able to react deeply to his inner healing heart. Marvin is one of the most giving, self-less people that I have ever met. Because of his TOTAL GIVING NATURE, HE IS ABLE TO REACH SUCH HIGH SPIRITUAL LEVELS, LEVELS OF ENLIGHTENING STRENGTH. His purpose in playing music is to heal the sick and become the medicine of HARMONIC SOUND VIBRATION. In February 2011, MODERN DRUMMER MAGAZINE had a two page article that featured this drumming genius. Marvin has over 1,000 videos of his performances that are all unique because they document him teaching others both professional Master Players and young students. His teaching methods are totally unique and he reminds me of the old day traditional methods of "THE JAZZ MESSENGERS" and the way Art Blakey exposed young talented players to the bandstand in his NYC LOFT. Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith is a living legend and AN UNSUNG HERO IN THE JAZZ COMMUNITY. Through his personal recording studio, Compassionate Sound and Motion, his record label, BUMAR RECORDS and his website: jazzdrumlessons.com Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith has given to the Jazz Community, everything he has to offer this great American Art-Form called JAZZ. Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith will be added to the ARCHIVES OF JAZZ MUSIC just like John William Coltrane, Charlie Parker, T. Monk, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Ellington and so,so many others too numerous to mention but I simply had to write this article to make people more aware of this LIVING LEGEND and DRUMMING GENIUS OF OUR TIME, 2011, THE YEAR OF MAJOR MUSICAL CHANGE AND AWARENESS.
