THROWS Conditioning Example of a "SNAKE" training circuit for specific Legs strength
THROWS Conditioning Example of a "SNAKE" training circuit for specific Legs strength
If you don't like the "boring" "pumping iron" weight lifting sessions , If you want to achieve the maximum of work in the minimum of time and if you want to stimulate your body harder for a faster and better result , this is a session for you to consider. A "Snake" training session is a variation of a training circuit which put emphasis not only on developing strength on one part of the body but also , by the way of multi stimulations and combinations of exercises , will challenge the body for specific adaptations into speed production and reactive strength. The structure of the session allows to combine the effects of pyramidal method with those of "utilisation" and also allows many possible variations in intensity and quantity to make this type of session fit with any training period from preparation to competition. This video clip is an example of a "snake" session with priority given to the legs and lower back development using the Dead Lift as main exercise. New Zealand Javelin vice champion Stephanie WRATHALL is performing the session as part of her winter preparation period program. This session normally last about 45/60 minutes as "rest" periods between drills should be kept as short as possible (1 to 2 minutes) for increased intensity. One point to remember : It is relatively easy to pick good exercises but that "only" will not do the job. What is done before and after the exercise can even become more important as it can change completely the muscular adaptations and the effects of the session. DP- published: 20 Jul 2014

HAMMER Drills Pivoting with chain - the "Preet drill"
An interesting variation and improvement of a classic pivoting "helicopter" drill , working on posture and foot work as well as speed . The (heavy) chain is there not only to improve the stability of the implement/thrower system during the turns but also to give the thrower and coach a visual feed back on the speeds and accelerations produced by a proper foot work as it comes higher and higher without any action of the arms. A good drill to use for athletes who pull with their arms in the turn's entries and for improving the right foot catching/pivoting accelerator action.- published: 19 May 2014

HAMMER BLOXHAM Matthew 70,18m and 70,67m NZL junior records 2014 06 28
At not even 18y New Zealand Hammer thrower Matthew BLOXHAM is certainly the best ever young hammer of the country and one of the best in the world of his generation after finishing 3rd in the 2013 World youth rankings when performing a 79,74m record throw with the 5kg. After throwing an easy 69,11m (well over the IAAF standards of 67,50m) with the 6kg in december , the young kiwi was thinking that his qualification for the 2014 World juniors champs was not going to be a problem .But, bad luck , the local athletics authorities decided to go for an elitist junior "stategy" (? ) and raised the standards to 71,85m (B !!!) or 73,50m (A). probably the most difficult standards in the world. That was the end of the hopes for many young New Zealand athletes (so far , only 3 athletes will go to Eugene instead of 23 in Moncton 2010 !) . But Matt was not among them and still confident he would throw over 72m by just training harder . Bad luck again ,premature hard training on a 17 years body is increasing the risks of injury and this is exactly what happened with a strained knee tendon which became progressively a major problem. Bad luck still, Matt had to keep training and throwing in competition because there was no answer to his request of a period extension (NZ limit date was 6 april , 3 months before the rest of the world to make the selection even more difficult !!!) and he could not rest an treat his injury properly . This aggravated so much the injury that he finally had to stop completely and start a real treatment including plasma injections . Even with the help of a great team of doctors , physios and conditioners , this lasted 3 months before he was allowed to start progressively training and throwing. In between the qualification period extension had been finally "given" (too late !) up to 30th june but there were only 6 weeks left to complete the physical recovery and do the technical recovery as it was soon obvious that Matt had completely lost his technique , rhythm and speed , struggling to reach 50m in his first throwing sessions. it was "Mission impossible" to get to near 72m and a 3m PB in such a short time . But Matt trained just harder and harder in the NZL winter conditions. On 30 may , 1st test comp , he got 65,75m ; 2 weeks later at the Australian trials he moved to 67,30m , then there was only one test competition left on 28th june in Auckland . Bad luck again , the conditions were really bad with cold , wind , rain and mud , but Matt was back at his best and after a cautious start at 66,75m , went for the big one and got it at the 4th attempt with a new NZL record at 70,18m , then even better with 70,67m in the 5th round .But he needed still 1,20m more in the last round to satisfy the selector and all people present were crossing their fingers for a miracle ! Unfortunately , the throw went out of control and there was no last minute miracle . There will be no world junior championship for the young Kiwi , probably the only national leader in the world over 70m not having the chance to compete in Eugene. Really sad and unfair after such a great achievement but hopefully for Matt , there will be a revenge one day , revenge over bad luck and revenge over adversity. There is no Justice in sport ... Miracles happen sometimes ...but Revenges are always possible ! DP- published: 01 Jul 2014

2014 01 25 NHBC Throws open meet highlights Part 2 Juniors
Many of these very young throwers are winners or medallists of the last "Colgate Games" , the biggest competition each year for athletes under 15 . The North Harbour Bays Cougars juniors are trained since several years by Sasha PILKINGTON who can be very proud of them but who should be also very proud of what she is achieving with the help of most of very supportive parents. She is not only giving them solid technical bases but also developing their competitive spirit and passion for the throwing events . Matt BLOXHAM , Richard CALLISTER , Alexander O NEIL ,Anthony NOBILO , Brandon JAMES and many more have been starting their first throws and winning their first medals under Sasha supervision . There are more to come as one can see on this video and names like Nadja KUMERICH , Tim and Zach FRANKLIN , James and Kathie SADLIER , Savannah SCHEEN , Benet KUMEROA , Mellata TATOLA , Leah and Caleb KOKO , Jayden WILLIAMSON and others are very likely going to be called for some NZL podiums ceremonies in the future years. 2014 01 25 North shore THROWS Open Meet Highlights part 1 U20 and Seniors
A good preparation competition in prevision of the main events of the NZL summer season starting next month. In the shot put Benedict CHONG WONG had a 80cm PB with the 7kg at 15,05m but could have done 80cm more in a fouled attempt. Kyle Van Der MERWE also improved his shot put PB but with 6kg to 16,21m. Jerram HUSTON 14,53m and Alex PARKINSON 13,26m (1cm PB !) also threw well. In the javelin Stephanie WRATHALL had 44,10m and a problem with her elbow. In the hammer Alex PARKINSON improved his PB to 42,65m , Richard CALLISTER threw the 6kg to 52,68m. The discus was the main event with good wind conditions but nobody did really throw well with Marshall HALL 53,26m , Alex PARKINSON 42,38m , Richard CALLISTER 46,01m . Only Ben CHONG WONG had a PB with the 1,75kg up to 44,89m. DP- published: 26 Jan 2014

2014 01 19 HAMMER Millenium New Year meet
With guest international hammer thrower Kibwe JOHNSON from the USA training during one month at the Millenium and most NZL athletes in inter season preparation it was a good opportunity to have a "training" competition and check for the form of the moment in preparation of the coming New Zealand and Australian championships and other national meetings. Kibwe was trying a bit too hard , hit the cage several times and was not really satisfied to manage only 70,45m in his last attempt. He could have indeed expected a few more meters from the look of his every day training. Matt BLOXHAM had a go with the 7kg as well . He did produce 3 throws over 60m but could not break his PB. Nicole BRADLEY was just coming back from a South Island refreshing Christmas holiday and started the 2014 year with a 2nd best ever throw at 57,99m . Richard CALLISTER was doing well with the 6kg at 52,22m . PBs of the day were achieved by the young generation Anthony NOBILO getting to 49,24m with the 5kg and Brandon JAMES following with 43,02m and new junior Andrew JACKSON just missing the 40m line with 39,81m with the 6kg. 2014 01 19 DISCUS Millenium New Year meet
It was the opening of the 2nd part of the NZL summer season with for some younger athletes new age groups and implements and new objectives as well. The senior and junior throwers were more looking toward some qualification chances at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the Eugene World junior champs , not an easy task indeed for most of them ! Marshall HALL is one of these , after achieving a 57m+ PB in december . He is chasing a possible 60m throw as well as Siositina HAKEAI in the senior women. But this sunday the wind was not really helping much and both had to satisfy with their usual performances of the moment as well as Richard CALLISTER or Alexander PARKINSON . The most significant PB was achieved by 16 years old and 2m tall Brandon JAMES 43,63m with the new 1,5kg implement .Brandon has a great potential in the event and wants to become a 50m thrower as soon as possible. But everybody was really enjoying to see the very young (8 years) Nadja KUMERICH breaking the North Harbour bays age group club record with 23,59m with already a good control of a full turn technique quite exceptional at this age ! 2013 THROWS Highlights Bays Cougars 60th jubilee Auckland 30-11-2013
The 60th jubilee of the Auckland North Harbour Bays Cougars will certainly be remembered by all the participants but especially by the throwers who celebrated the event by breaking 6 New Zealand records in 120 minutes. The star of the day was certainly the young hammer thrower Matthew BLOXHAM with 4 successive NZL records in the hammer and a top 3 in in the world performance of 79,74m in the Youth age group. French World junior hammer champion Alexandra TAVERNIER , actually training in Auckland , was also throwing great with 2 new New Zealand all comers records and a best of 69,63m . More to come for this talented girl who has got to put some better technique on her natural speed. In the shot put Benedict CHONG WONG was back to the best with a 18,49m throw who could open the door to 1m more at the next NZL secondary schools championships. More good performances from the Auckland center and Bays Cougars throwers throwers in this video , especially with Stephanie Wrathalll javelin , Marshall Hall , Richard Callister , Tina Hakeai discus , Kyle Van der Merwe , shot , Nicole Bradley, Phillip Jensen, Anthony Nobilo etc... HAMMER Matt BLOXHAM 61,77m with 7kg 28-09-2013 Auckland Video analysis
Young New Zealander Matthew BLOXHAM was quite frustrated after not achieving his goal to make the top 8 final at the last World Youth Champs in DONETSK 2013. After some time needed to swallow the fact , he could draw the lessons of his failure and start rebuild himself mentally , physically and technically toward new goals and new hopes. This new 4m PB 61,77m with the 7kg is coming after a 2 months of preparation oriented toward maximal and specific strength. Throws over 60m with the 7kg are not common for under 17 years hammer throwers in the world. Now there is still 3 months to go up to the end of 2013 and for Matt to change age group from Youth to Junior , and this time will be used for more improvements with the 6 and 5kg .With the NZL season starting soon and a new peaking period already scheduled for the 1st half of december at the NZL secondary school champs in Hamilton and the South Island Hammer festival 14-15 dec in Dunedin. Preparation will be now oriented toward Technical work and Speed and hopefully we shall see some more World class hammer throws and more New Zealand records ! This video is a video analysis of this 61,77m 7kg throw. DP- published: 30 Sep 2013

DISCUS HAKEAI Siositina 57,91m NZL junior record Auckland 28-09-2013
"Tina" HAKEAI is like Valerie ADAMS, Beatrice FAUMUINA or Ana PO UHILA , one of these strong build Pacific Island girls that can be quite often found in New Zealand.Unfortunately most of them are too heavy or too lazy to achieve their potential and become great athletes. But when they are dedicated and courageous enough to train seriously and have a reasonable diet ,then they become really impressive and able to produce great power and performances. Siositina , of Tongan origin ,was discovered in 2008 in South Auckland by Nigel EDWARDS , head of the "Throw for Gold" talent identification operation launched by Athletics New Zealand and the John Walker foundation. At only 16y , she already qualified for the 2010 World Juniors champs in Moncton and made the top 12 final . One year later she was one of the favorites at the Lille World Youth but threw erratically and failed the qualifications. In 2012 she was there again at the Barcelona World Juniors and redeemed herself to finish 4th and break her PB in the final. This year 2013 ,she separated from EDWARDS and is now being coached by Matt DALLOW the ANZ national event coach as part of the ANZ elite squad of the Millenium Institute Auckland. She is still a junior but there is no competition at world level for this age and she can focus only on the world rankings where she is 4th junior and has 3 months till the end of the year to make the top 3 and hopefully be the 2nd NZL girl after former World champion Beatrice FAUMUINA to throw over the 60m line and prepare for a senior career at world level. This video is a visual analysis of her new PB and NZL junior record throw of 57,91m just set at the Throws Spring series 2 28th september 2013 in Auckland. DP- published: 29 Sep 2013
