Geneva vote: No final decision by India yet
The claim by Tamil Nadu Congress leaders that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has assured them that India will vote against Sri Lanka at the Geneva meeting of UN rights body in March is not being given much credence.
For one, Parliament is currently in session. The PM is unlikely to make such an important foreign policy decision without informing the House. The Congress MPs led by Sudarshan Nachiappan, claimed that the PM told them India will try to restore Lankan Tamils’ rights and their properties lost in war.
Though the UPA government is under pressure from Tamil Nadu political parties, New Delhi will be cautious not to open a fresh confrontation and incur Colombo ‘s ire.
