"Japanese Aircraft Revetment built by American Civilian POWs Completed 1943". 7:10-7:40 Moving up the southern leg of Wake island 7:44 I am zooming in on the gap between Wake and Peale islands. There used to be a bridge connecting the two islands, but it burned down in 2000. No one really knows why the fire started but it's assumed that a cigarette or possibly someone barbequing on the bridge started the fire. All that is left are the rusty supports. See IMG0069, IMG0071, IMG0183 and IMG0207 for the supports. As an interesting side note to the elevated bridge, If you look at IMG0197, you can see what is left of the Japanese built "walking bridge". I believe the elevated bridge was not completed at the time of the Wake Island takeover by the Japanese so the Japanese chose to build a walking bridge between Wake and Peale that could be used at low tide. Parts of it still remain to this day and can be used during low tide. I walked on it myself the day before I took this picture and it is quite an experience. 8:08-9:25 A newly discovered, American built bunker. Colin's guys had just found this right before I arrived. A fragment of a Pan Am Airways travelogue, this short film shows both Midway and Wake Islands, American possessions in the Pacific. Both islands were stop-over points for the Pan Am Clippers, where passengers could get out and stretch their legs and rest before beginning the next leg of their journey. At Midway visitors see the famed Gooney Birds and terns, and on Wake a menagerie of fish awaits (although in the film, they are apparently in an aquarium!) Made in the 1930s these are rarely seen views of islands which became focal points for conflict with the Japanese during WWII. This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. December 23, 1941 is the day Wake Island fell to the forces from the Imperial Japanese Navy. The battle began on December 8, 1941, which was December 7, and Pearl Harbor. Wake Island was on the other side of the international dateline. Japan launched simultaneous attacks on many islands in the Pacific to secure their foothold in the Pacific. Almost as soon as the Wake Island Defense Force learned of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the attack on Wake Island began. The Garrison consisted of 450 US Marines, a handful of U.S. Navy personnel and approximately 1200 civilian contractors working on construction projects on the island. At that time, wake Island wasn't even on the maps. It was however a stop off and refueling point for the China Clippers. The island had strategic value to the Japanese and to the US and the Marines were told to hold Wake Island until reinforcements arrive. Of all the mistakes that were made in the early days of the Pacific war. The decision to not reinforce the Marines on Wake Island is perhaps the most infamous. Adm. Pye, who was interim Commander-In-Chief Pacific forces until Adm. Chester Nimitz could arrive and take over, Adm. Pye was afraid to engage the superior Japanese force for fear of losing more assets. This decision has been analyzed, second-guessed and armchair admiraled and no consensus can be reached whether or not Pye made the right decision. One thing is certain, the United States Marine Corps to this this day has not forgiven Adm. Pye for this decision. The music track accompanying this presentation is from a gentleman named Oscar Brand, folksinger active during the 40s, 50s and 60s. He made a career out of taking military songs, both official and made up and recording them. Most are hysterical and document historical events in both World War II and Korea. I hope you enjoy it. Oh, and it wouldn't hurt if you bought the album's either. They are available on Amazon.com and iTunes. I would like to take this opportunity to thank The Orchard Music, who administers Mr. Brand' s music and I hope they will continue to allow the use of the song, Wake Island.

Wake Island (1942)
Plot
In November 1941, Major Caton takes command of the small Marine garrison on Wake Island. His tendency toward spit and polish upsets the men's tropical lassitude, but Pearl Harbor changes everything. Soon the island is attacked and the Marines pull together day by day; but how long can they hold out?

Tribute to Wake Island

December 23, 1941 is the day Wake Island fell to the forces from the Imperial Japanese Navy. The battle began on December 8, 1941, which was December 7, and Pearl Harbor. Wake Island was on the other side of the international dateline. Japan launched simultaneous attacks on many islands in the Pacific to secure their foothold in the Pacific.
Almost as soon as the Wake Island Defense Force learned of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the attack on Wake Island began. The Garrison consisted of 450 US Marines, a handful of U.S. Navy personnel and approximately 1200 civilian contractors working on construction projects on the island. At that time, wake Island wasn't even on the maps. It was however a stop off and refueling point for the China Clippers. The island had strategic value to the Japanese and to the US and the Marines were told to hold Wake Island until reinforcements arrive.
Of all the mistakes that were made in the early days of the Pacific war. The decision to not reinforce the Marines on Wake Island is perhaps the most infamous. Adm. Pye, who was interim Commander-In-Chief Pacific forces until Adm. Chester Nimitz could arrive and take over, Adm. Pye was afraid to engage the superior Japanese force for fear of losing more assets. This decision has been analyzed, second-guessed and armchair admiraled and no consensus can be reached whether or not Pye made the right decision. One thing is certain, the United States Marine Corps to this this day has not forgiven Adm. Pye for this decision.
The music track accompanying this presentation is from a gentleman named Oscar Brand, folksinger active during the 40s, 50s and 60s. He made a career out of taking military songs, both official and made up and recording them. Most are hysterical and document historical events in both World War II and Korea. I hope you enjoy it.

Wake Island (
/ˈweɪk/; also known as Wake Atoll) is a coral atoll having a coastline of 12 miles (19 km) in the North Pacific Ocean, located about two-thirds of the way between Honolulu, 2,300 statute miles (3,700 km) to the west and Guam, 1,510 statute miles (2,430 km) to the east. It is an unorganized, unincorporated territory of the United States, administered by the Office of Insular Affairs, U.S. Department of the Interior. Access to the island is restricted, and all activities on the island are managed by the United States Air Force. There is also a missile facility operated by the United States Army. The largest island, Wake Island, is the center of activity on the atoll and has an airport with a runway of 9,800 feet (3,000 m).
On January 6, 2009, President George W. Bush included the atoll as a part of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument. For statistical purposes, Wake is grouped as one of the United States Minor Outlying Islands.
Wake is located to the west of the International Date Line and sits in the Wake Island Time Zone, one day ahead of the 50 U.S. states.
