ARSENAL VS EVERTON 4-1: Official goals and highlights FA Cup Sixth Round HD
Arsenal became the first team to seal a place at Wembley in The FA Cup Semi-Finals, when they knocked out Everton at the Emirates Stadium in Saturday's only Sixth Round tie. An early opening goal from Mesut Ozil, the German's first since December, set Arsene Wenger's side on their way only for Everton to hit back through Romelu Lukaku before the break. But a twice-taken penalty from Mikel Arteta against his former club and a late double from sub Olivier Giroud secured what was an ultimately comfortable passage through. The scoreline was a shade harsh on Everton, who had their moments and will reflect on a number of missed opportunities at crucial points in the game, but Arsenal's second-half show means they are back in the final four of The Cup for the first time since 2009. And with no FA Cup title since 2005, their last trophy, Wenger's side will be looking to register their name back on the honours list of this famous competition. It was a frantic start to the game and Arsenal struck first, when Santi Cazorla slid a perfect pass forward for Ozil, who made no mistake by drilling a first time shot beyond Joel Robles. And Robles had to make two good saves to keep his side in it, first by beating away Yaya Sanogo's shot from the angle and then electing to punch Thomas Vermaelen's drive to safety. Everton had a good chance to draw level when Kevin Mirallas did well to cut back Sylvain's Distin's lofted pass into the area but Steven Pienaar mis-hit his shot wide of the post. Robles was let off the hook in the 24th minute, when Bacary Sagna's cross caught out the Spaniard. It looked to be drifting over and out, but the Everton stopper lost his bearings and turned it back onto the bar before Seamus Coleman cleared the danger. The visitors always looked dangerous on the break though and that was how they got themselves level just after the half-hour mark. It was Ross Barkley who led the charge on the right, beating Kieran Gibbs before crossing to the far post for Mirallas. He really should've scored from close range, but his off-cue effort picked out his Belgian compatriot Lukaku, who made no mistake from a yard. That set things up perfectly for the second half and, much like their start to the game, Arsenal were on the attack instantly as Robles was forced into an early save from Vermaelen's bouncing shot. But they were nearly caught out when Lukaku robbed Vermaelen on the touchline before setting up Barkley for a shot. The England man looked odds-on to score, but smashed his shot over the bar from inside the box. And that miss proved to be costly as Arsenal re-took the lead with just over 20 minutes remaining, when Gareth Barry tripped Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the box. Arteta stepped up and slotted past Robles, but after interference in the area, a retake was ordered by ref Mark Clattenburg. That didn't concern Arteta though, as he simply picked the other corner at the second attempt to put one foot in the Semi-Final for the Gunners. And that goal led to some sparkling play from Arsenal in the dying stages, with Sagna's cross picking out Giroud for a simple finish with just less than ten minutes remaining. The Frenchman's second was even better as a sweeping move from Arsenal saw two passes from the right between Tomas Rosicky and Ozil separate the Everton defence, before Giroud was left to slot home past the exposed Robles. MANCHESTER CITY VS WIGAN 1-2: Official goals and highlights FA Cup Sixth Round HD
Wigan Athletic continued their FA Cup defence in style with an incredible 2-1 victory at Manchester City. The Latics sprung one of the biggest surprises in FA Cup history last year when Ben Watson's last-minute header upset all the odds to see off City. And the spectre of FA Cups past hung over the Etihad once more as goals from Jordi Gomez and James Perch were enough to send Latics through. Samir Nasri's strike as the home side heaped on the pressure counted for nothing as their Cup run was again ended by Wigan. It was quite an afternoon for Wigan boss Uwe Rosler. Re-united with the fans who still laud him as a cult hero following his four-year spell in Manchester during the '90s, the German would have wished for much, but certainly wouldn't have expected such a successful return to his former club. Since his arrival from Brentford back in December, Rosler's Latics have suffered just three defeats in 15 and have won their last five. Perfectly poised to make a late assault on the Championship play-off places, the DW outfit headed to the Etihad in fine form and it showed as they matched their more illustrious opponents in the opening stages. Jordi Gomez blasted over with the first effort of the game and Chris McCann's surging run should have come to more. City looked unusually wasteful in possession and just minutes after Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas had combined well to threaten former England international Scott Carson, the visitors were in front. Martin Demichelis tripped the onrushing Marc-Antoine Fortune in the box and referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot. Gomez made no mistake and the underdogs were in front. The home side offered little in response throughout the remainder of the half and they were made to pay in the opening stages of the second when Latics doubled their lead. James McArthur burst past three opposition defenders and crossed for Perch who beat his man to poke home. Two goals down and with their hopes of domestic dominance slipping away, Manuel Pellegrini introduced David Silva, James Milner and Edin Dzeko. The risk paid off as his side took a grip of the game, but when Dzeko headed Gael Clichy's cross against the foot of the post, their chances of a recovery seemed slim. Nasri restored his side's hopes, however, when he found the bottom corner from 18 yards and Dzeko could have restored parity twice only to see one effort blocked on the line and another fly inches wide of the post. In the end late City pressure proved too little too late and Wigan were thoroughly deserving of yet another historic victory. They will have to be at their very best once again if they hope to reach a second Final in as many years as Arsenal lay in wait at Wembley Stadium. Manchester City (1-4-4-2): 30 Costel Pantilimon, 2 Micah Richards, 26 Martin Demichelis, 6 Joleon Lescott, 22 Gael Clichy, 15 Jesus Navas, 42 Yaya Toure, 14 Javi Garcia, 8 Samir Nasri, 9 Alvaro Negredo, 16 Sergio Aguero Substitutes: 21 David Silva for Toure (52). 10 Edin Dzeko for Navas (52). 7 James Milner for Negredo (52). A first half strike from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and one from Lukas Podolski shortly after the break gave Arsenal the advantage in this closely fought FA Cup Fifth Round tie. Steven Gerrard's penalty for Liverpool set up a nail-biting final thirty minutes, but it was the north London outfit who came out on top. Goals from Stevan Jovetic and Samir Nasri ensured Manchester City saw off Chelsea and maintained Manuel Pellegrini's four-fronted trophy charge. A calm first-half finish by Jovetic and a beautifully worked team move that left Nasri with a tap-in in the second were enough to secure a place in Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final draw. HULL CITY VS SUNDERLAND 3-0: Official goals and highlights FA Cup Sixth Round HD
Hull City reached The FA Cup Semi-Final with a 3-0 victory against Sunderland at KC Stadium. Steve Bruce's men triumphed over his former club thanks to second-half goals from Curtis Davis, David Meyler and Matty Fryatt. Hull's Sone Aluko also saw a first-half penalty saved by Oscar Ustari, but it didn't stop the home side from booking their place at Wembley Sunderland boss Gus Poyet made six changes to his League Cup final line-up from seven days earlier, including a rare start for Argentinian striker Ignacio Scocco. Bruce's men, keen to atone for their 4-1 humbling by Newcastle United, started well and hit the top of the woodwork with a cross-shot from Maynor Figueroa after just three minutes. The visitors' chances were few and far between, Scocco spooning a Phil Bardsley cross over the bar in the 19th minute as Hull - weakened by the absence of Cup-tied pair Nikica Jelavic and Shane Long - dominated despite a lack of cutting edge. Sebastian Larsson's foul on Aluko gave the Tigers the chance to go ahead from the spot but Ustari guessed right and dived low to his right to gather the weak spot-kick. Towards the end of the first half, Ustari was down again to stop another Aluko chance. But then came the visitors' second-half collapse, starting with John O'Shea's foul on Fryatt on the right flank. It presented the set-piece from which Tom Huddlestone's inch-perfect delivery found the head of Davies and he guided back across goal and into the corner of Ustari's net. Four minutes later, George Boyd's long ball deceived Lee Cattermole and gave Meyler a clear run on goal. The former Sunderland man providing a sweet left-foot finish to double the advantage. And Sunderland's misery was complete on 75 minutes when Cattermole's bad back pass went straight to Fryatt who picked his spot and sealed the Tigers' trip to Wembley. Arsenal vs Coventry City 4-0, FA Cup Fourth Round Proper 2013-14 highlights
Lukas Podolski's first-half double ensured Arsenal were the first side to make it into The FA Cup Fifth Round this season as the Premier League leaders overpowered Coventry City. Although Coventry had a handful of chances, with Leon Clarke a threat throughout, Arsenal rarely had to extend themselves and made the game safe with late goals from the substitutes Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla. Coventry and their 5,100 travelling fans had bad memories of their last visit to the Emirates Stadium, going down 6-1 in the League Cup last season, but Arsene Wenger paid Steven Pressley's side a compliment by fielding a near full-strength side. England internationals Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were given an opportunity to boss midfield, and Kieran Gibbs and Carl Jenkinson were expected to drive forward from full-back. Arsenal permitted Coventry several early spells of possession, but there was always a feeling that the hosts were toying with the 1987 FA Cup-winners. And they punished some impatient Coventry build-up play when Oxlade-Chamberlain intercepted a pass intended for Franck Moussa and laid off for Mesut Ozil. The Germany international skipped clear of one challenge and picked out his countryman Podolski, who drove towards the visitors' box at speed. Joe Murphy sped off his line to close on Podolski but the forward held his nerve and fired into the empty net. Coventry came close to an immediate answer, however, when the ever-industrious Carl Baker burst from midfield and was allowed to canter through unattended before checking on to his left foot and shooting powerfully from 25 yards. Lukasz Fabianski had to be at his best to tip over. Podolski doubled his tally on 26 minutes, nodding unmarked in at the far post, after Per Mertesacker had flicked on Ozil's corner. Perhaps trailing 2-0 at half-time against the Premier League leaders liberated Coventry, because they emerged in a bullish mood. Clarke sprung clear of the offside trap but fired straight at the legs of Fabianski. Then the powerhouse striker picked up a pass from Moussa, but his chip-drive flew off target. Nicklas Bendtner came close to making it 3-0 for the hosts only to skew wide from 10 yards after good approach work from Jack Wilshere, but within seconds Coventry were at it again. Billy Daniels swiveled clear on the edge of the Arsenal area only to fire over Fabianski's cross. But the visitors' forward momentum soon petered out, and the Arsenal fans were treated to a first glimpse of the 16-year-old midfielder Gedion Zelalem. Tipped for great things, the Berlin-born Germany youth international became the first Arsenal player to born after Arsene Wenger took over at the north London club. Giroud ended Arsenal's 57-minute goalless spell by steering home an excellent left-wing cutback, and then another replacement, Cazorla, made it 4-0, smashing high into the roof of Murphy's net with one minute remaining. Arsenal (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs; Wilshere, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Zelalem, 71); Gnabry, Ozil, Podolski (Giroud, 79); Bendtner (Cazorla, 71). Manchester City vs Watford 4-2, FA Cup Fourth Round 2013-14 highlights
Sergio Aguero was the hero for Manchester City as his second-half hat-trick helped Manuel Pellegrini's men avoid an FA Cup upset against Watford. The Championship side had deservedly taken a two-goal lead into the break through Fernando Forestieri and Troy Deeney. But City came out all guns blazing in the second half to earn what at one stage appeared an unlikely victory -- with Aguero the catalyst for the comeback. The Argentinian volleyed home the first from close range, before levelling matters on 78 with a sweetly-struck left-foot effort from the edge of the area. With just three minutes remaining, Watford goalkeeper Jonathan Bond spilled Aleksandar Kolarov's low shot from range and Aguero completed the comeback, and his treble, in added time. Watford deserve a great deal of credit for their performance, particularly in the first half, but an Aguero-inspired City move into Round Five and are still in the hunt in four separate competitions. The Hornets started the tie brightly, as Deeney and Cristian Battocchio both fired efforts just over the top of Costel Pantilimon's bar in the opening four minutes. It took City a while to get going and their first sight at goal came from a Jesus Navas corner. The ball found its way to the back post but Joleon Lescott could only blaze over from just a few yards out. However, this chance failed to lift a sluggish City from their slumber and it was no surprise when Watford took the lead on 21 minutes. Gabriele Angella found Deeney from the right and a weighted flick from the skipper played in Forestieri, who was bursting through. The Italian took the ball in his stride and coolly beat Pantilimon with a low shot into the far corner. And things got even better for the visitors just before the 30-minute mark as Deeney deservedly doubled their advantage. A poor pass from Martin Demichelis was pounced upon by Sean Murray, who linked up with Ikechi Anya to set up a counter-attack. Anya fed Deeney and the big No9 did the rest, calmly slipping the ball underneath Pantilimon at the near post to send the travelling fans into dreamland. Seeing the need to shore up his backline, Manuel Pellegrini made two changes at the break. Pablo Zabaleta replaced Micah Richards at right-back while club captain Vincent Kompany came on for Jack Rodwell, with Demichelis moving into midfield. The hosts improved in the second half and took the game to Watford straight from the restart. Edin Dzeko found himself with a yard of space inside the box but got the ball stuck under his feet and failed to trouble Bond. The tide was turning, though, and City gradually increased the pressure on their Championship opponents - substitute Stevan Jovetic, on for Marcos Lopes, couldn't quite connect with Zabaleta's cross as Pellegrini's men sought a route back into the contest. The pressure eventually told, though, as Aguero smashed home Kolarov's ball from the left on 59 minutes. This goal gave City the impetus and they set about finding an equaliser, with Dzeko again unable to find a way past Bond with a low shot. Watford were required to defend stoutly for the remainder of the game, with Deeney their sole outlet upfront. But the free-scoring Premier League side levelled matters with just 12 minutes remaining as Aguero curled home a wonderful left-foot effort from the edge of the box. With a replay looking likely, Kolarov tried his luck from distance with just three minutes left on the clock and the ball squirmed through Bond's fingers and crept over the line to edge City ahead late on. And Aguero completed the comeback two minutes into added time, tapping home a deep cross at the back post.- published: 26 Jan 2014
