Today, all the cool kids say, "We are automated, we are globalized, we are an army of one!" But, as he shares in his talk at TEDxBemidji, John Repko believes we can find a better fit with the future by adapting some wisdom from our past and saying: "We are local, we are community, we are smart, we are Bemidji!"
John Repko, President of Pikasoft LLC, is a software startup manager and adjunct faculty member at Bemidji State University. He’s currently working on a PhD in Software Engineering and writing "social media for shy people," software that builds community while maintaining privacy.
John comes from a place where the Apollo space program and The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau were reality television programs for kids. John’s path to MIT and beyond was set by the news coverage of July 20,1969.
In crafting his TEDx talk, John drew on a presentation from Kristine McDivitt Tompkins that has stuck with him over the years. John quotes Kristine’s late husband, Doug Tompkins, and it is his hope to properly reflect their extraordinary causes and visions.
John has enjoyed a varied career that has found him on a football team with Dolph Lundgren (before Rocky IV), playing guitar with one of the founding members of the "boyband" Menudo, and writing software next to Jessica Alba. Throughout his career John has made significant contributions that include cloud computing delivery at Oracle and innovations in visual languages that led to the NeXT machine and live on in software that still ships on OSX Macintoshes. As Vice President of Operations, John built the data centers and ran the software for hosted-software pioneer Oracle Business Online where he was general manager and chief technologist with global responsibility for the SaaS solution delivering Oracle Applications. John has also held CTO and VP of Technology positions at publicly traded as well as startup companies including Apropos Technology, eScout, and The Magellan Network. John holds a B.S. from MIT, an M.S. from RPI, and an MBA from Stanford University.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
