I Will Not Let An Exam Result Decide My Fate - Suli Breaks,Vanity Fair,2009 "I Will Not Let An Exam Result Decide My Fate" picks up on the education topic but takes a different stance and angle from "Why I Hate School But Love Education". This poem talks about how we have been made to think about how education and getting university degrees can give us opportunities to have a better chance in making our dream careers a reality. It also touches on how as individuals we are judged and tested by how well we perform on exams, but not all people perform well in exams so why are they made out to feel like they're dumb? The inconsistencies of the education system are really peeled open to reveal a deep problem that needs to be addressed and how society's needs have changed to make this even more apparent. When it boils down to it, why are we misled into thinking that education is the only way forward for successful means in our work and career lives? We need to open our minds and educate ourselves that exam results aren't the barometer of success and that we can't let them decide our fate. We are in charge of our own destinies! But what is the value of mainstream schooling? Why is it that some of the most high profile and successful figures within the Western world openly admit to never having completed any form of higher learning? Paying homage to Jefferson Bethke's "Why I Hate Religion but Love Jesus", a piece that received 22 million views in the space of a week, I address a number of these issues in my offering "Why I Hate School, but Love Education". With scores of school leavers wanting to further their education with no guarantee of their dream job at the end of it, we should ask ourselves whether qualifications still hold the same value now as they did in previous years? Does success in the school system correlate to success in life? Or is the school system simply geared towards fact retention and regurgitation? Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus || Spoken Word
A poem about how Jesus is so much better than you ever imagined and how grace, when properly understood, explodes in a heart and brings true joy. Subscribe here: http://ow.ly/t8bDw Support the mission here: http://ow.ly/t8bED Get my audiobook for FREE here: http://ow.ly/tF1Ob A poem I wrote to highlight the difference between Jesus and false religion. In the scriptures Jesus received the most opposition from the most religious people of his day. At it's core Jesus' gospel and the good news of the Cross is in pure opposition to self-righteousness/self-justification. Religion is man centered, Jesus is God-centered. This poem highlights my journey to discover this truth. Religion either ends in pride or despair. Pride because you make a list and can do it and act better than everyone, or despair because you can't do your own list of rules and feel "not good enough" for God. With Jesus though you have humble confident joy because He represents you, you don't represent yourself and His sacrifice is perfect putting us in perfect standing with God the Father. The Black Bruins [Spoken Word] - Sy Stokes
https://www.facebook.com/SyStokesSpeaks Being the cousin of Arthur Ashe, I feel as though it is my responsibility to uphold the strong voices of the Black Bruin community. This school has experienced unacceptable instances of injustice recently, and many people are not aware of what is happening at this university. I am a proud Black, Cherokee, and Chinese student at UCLA. Thank you for watching. _________________________________________________________ Word On Wednesdays at UCLA http://www.youtube.com/user/TheWordonWednesdays IG: SYzzle Filmed by Justin Janes & Steven Ng Written and Performed by Sy Stokes Music Composed by David Teel Editing and Post-Production by Justin Janes The Black Bruins: Alex Mercier Mike Wamungu Davontae Foxx Drew Donte Miller Aaron Willis Amir Ali Mike Bailey Jr. Will Edem Oz Azubuike CJ Okoye EzMoney Harper Lyrics: The Last Black Bruins In fall 2012, the total enrollment, graduate and undergraduate, for African American males at UCLA was 660 students. That's 3.3% of the 19, 838 other males enrolled here. Out of that 660 African American male students, 65% are undergraduate athletes. The number of entering male freshman students was 2,418; only 48 of them are African American. The graduation rates for African American males at UCLA is 74%... Which means out of that 48 freshmen last year... Only 35 are predicted to graduate. When we were children, we learned how to mix colors with a paint brush We learned that white mixed with anything makes it brighter But we wouldn't dare mix anything with brown or black or else our entire creation would be ruined What we failed to realize... was that the untouched dark section of the paint brush pallet became the symbol of the melanin in our skin The painter only used us to write words that were dark enough to be noticed on a white background So if words are all we are good for then don't you dare tell us to silence our voices when we choose to speak Now you tell me that I should be proud to be at UCLA? When only 35 of us are predicted to walk across that stage? When most of us are dropping out from the lack of financial aid While Judy Olian, Dean of Anderson School of Management just spent $647,000 on first class flights and hotel stays But waiting for an apology is asking for the impossible Because no snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible But you tell me I should be proud to be a Bruin When we have more national championships than we do black male freshmen It's evident that our only purpose here is to improve your winning percentage So now black high school kids can care less about grades, just as long as the number on the back of their jersey doesn't fade And you tell me I should be proud to be a Bruin But according to Professor Sander, 3.3% is far too many black kids On his perfectly paved roads there are far too many black skids This school is not diverse just because you put it on a pamphlet But you'll name a building after Albert Carnesale who publicly opposes affirmative action The action that can make our fraction on your demographic pie chart look more than just a second hand on a clock It's all.... talk Just to maintain this fraudulent reputation Of this institutionalized racist corporation They don't care about the cultural limitations of being a minority in society So we have become our own painters... with our own pallets... And we have voices that speak defiantly So we IGNITE the flames to help us find the path to our future Increasing Graduations, Not Incarcerations, Transforming Education because our numbers can't be any fewer So don't be surprised that we have become rebellious for what has happened to us When every black student in class feels like Rosa Parks on the bus We are tryin to rewind time with role reversal as our revenge Because we have no other choice when the university refuses to come to our defense But we have come too far to let history repeat itself Even when they are peeling off the dark fur of the Bruin pelt Because our faces are just used to cover up from the public what's really inside Revitalizing lies to perpetuate your disguise Stop pretending that the wounds of our past have healed We're not asking for a handout, we're asking for a level playing field Those with less opportunity are fighting for their position trying to find their place But those with privilege are hitting triples when they were already born on third base So with all of my brothers' hopes and dreams that this university has tried to ruin How the hell am I supposed to be proud... to call myself... a Bruin- published: 05 Nov 2013

I Love You More - Spoken Word
I Love You More - Spoken Word
Girl, There's something I gotta tell ya, Cuz I just had a talk with this other fella who claims that he loves you as well. I said "woah man, slow your roll. She's with me, this car is full. My love is hers and hers is mine, And I've been loving her just fine." He said, "You're not all that you think you are, And I wasn't asking for room in the car, I want to be her everything." I said, "This is my territory and you cannot take it. Any bond that you have with her, I'll break it." He shook his head as if I sounded conceited, And said, "You wouldn't do that if you only knew what she truly needed." I said, "Knew what she needed? I fulfill that role. I know all about her. So thanks, but I've got this under control." He said, "What do you know?" I said, "plenty." I said, "I know she was raised in a big family and was a woman by 20. She's got brown hair that looks great even getting out of bed." He said, "I know the very number of hairs on her head." I said, "......you're just sounding creepy." He said, "Oh, there's more. Believe me." I said "You better not speak to her, and you better keep your distance." He said "You don't understand. I don't just speak to her, I spoke her into existence. And our separation, there'd be nothing worse." I said "...but even if you are God, you don't appreciate her beauty like me, I love how she has complexion and curves like the women on TV." He said "Before existence existed, her curves I twisted, Intricately weaving atoms into cells, only for my eyes to see, Knitting together a treasure, To look on with pleasure, Until I'd watch her In her mother's womb later,You don't have a clue how beautiful I made her. Your taste was not for the artistry in her genes, But for how she fit into her jeans, Immersing the concept of beauty with physicalities as if to drown it, and shoving and shoving that idea down her throat until she felt the need to stick her finger down it, because when you wrap your arms around her waist, its as if she had a tape measure around it I said "But Jesus, you're not in my plans, I'm gonna propose, I hired the band, The flowers are bought, the candles are set, I paid for her friends to take her. To do her lashes and her nails, and I'll go down on one knee just like in fairy tales." He said, "All the way down on one knee? Man, I hope you don't bruise it.A competition with my affection, you'll always lose it. Because you see I already did propose to her. But when I did it, My knees were broken, With ripped flesh and arms stretched wide open. And while you were paying for her lashes and nails, I paid for her, By taking her lashes, by taking her nails. Confessing my love, I said 'It is finished.' As if she didn't have to earn it, And that she could take that, Long list of lusted-after lovers, And burn it. And present to her the ring, Oh the ring, That she would wear not on her but in her, My seal, my Spirit, that would speak to her when she's willing to hear it, that she is mine. And that I'm coming to get her. But you have been posing for her as if you're better for her than me. Keeping her from me, Telling her that you're her cure, But really acting more like a disease. Covering up spiritual fatality with a more physical reality. like makeup, piling on humor and good looks, as if a mysterious man is the perfect fix, leaving her drooling over fictional books, when I've already written her sixty-six. yes I know, she's kneeling and feeling for what's appealing, but I shaped her heart for a different kind of beauty. so put down the video games, son, here's a new Call of Duty: I've designed a portrait of my beauty, my grace, and my protection, that would ultimately satisfy her affection, if only with opened eyes she saw it, So here's the picture. now go, take the love that I give you and draw it. So girl, Don't fall in love with the man I plan to be, if I'm not even pursuing the Perfect Man to be, cuz you're going to have to look beyond this man to see that true love found beyond the bounds of the one who formed it is a fantasy, I know my words unaffected by Christ neglected him, and even called to bury him, But if I truly loved you my words should beg you to marry him down on my knees. this isn't my picture, please, I'm just trying to trace it. and ask you to stop looking at me long enough to face it. say you cheated on him? he says "I'll erase it." say your life is messed up? he says "I'll replace it. I'll take it, I'll test it, I'll refine it, sign it, and call it a testimony, declaring that you were tested and found your one and only love. I love you, like no one else. like no one else. like no tells, cuz the world tells, it does, it yells, telling you to love all these guys and lies and then calls you a whore. Forget all that. I love you more.- published: 21 Mar 2012
