Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster became friends when they played together in Duke Ellington's fabulous band of the early Forties. Here they show that their feeling of kinship hasn't gone away, nearly twenty years after Webster abruptly left the band. Anytime you put two of the Duke's hornmen together, you'll get magic. The first 12 tracks are from the 60's meeting. Besides tenor and alto, we have Lou Levy on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums. Tracks 13-17 has Ray Nance on trumpet, Lawrence Brown on trombone, Emil Richards on vibes, Russ Freeman on piano, Joe Mondragon on bass, Mel Lewis on drums, and arranged by Jimmy Hamilton, in Los Angeles, January 31, 1961. This session was recorded in Copenhagen in 1965 and features pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen and drummer Alex Riel backing Webster on a program of standards. Plot
On her way to stay at her Grandmother's cabin, which she just inherited, Alex Summers car breaks down and five college kids come to her rescue. To thank them she invites them to stay at the cabin with her. Strange things start to happen and they feel like their being watched and then they find the cellar downstairs with the bench all covered in blood and one by one they start to disappear, dragged down to that room... to the bench.

Plot
On a lake in the woods, a man's boat suddenly capsizes. He nearly drowns, but another man camping nearby sees him and rescues him. After they part, the rescuer meets the first man's wife and, not knowing who she is, he befriends her and begins to spend time with her. It is not long before a tense and very uncomfortable situation develops.

Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster became friends when they played together in Duke Ellington's fabulous band of the early Forties. Here they show that their feeling of kinship hasn't gone away, nearly twenty years after Webster abruptly left the band.
Anytime you put two of the Duke's hornmen together, you'll get magic. The first 12 tracks are from the 60's meeting. Besides tenor and alto, we have Lou Levy on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums. Tracks 13-17 has Ray Nance on trumpet, Lawrence Brown on trombone, Emil Richards on vibes, Russ Freeman on piano, Joe Mondragon on bass, Mel Lewis on drums, and arranged by Jimmy Hamilton, in Los Angeles, January 31, 1961.

Born in Amsterdam, Johan van der Keuken (1938-2001) was a Dutch documentary filmmaker, author, and photographer. His reputation has spread across Europe, especially to France. Yet, his work goes virtually unknown in Britain and the USA.
VDK's lifelong passion for music is highlighted in this portrait of jazz saxophonist Ben Webster. Big Ben is not a conventional portrait but an exploration. It is made up of biographical details, scenes of everyday life, and the joy and exuberance of the music contrasted to the violence of the world in which the black artist lives and takes his stand. We see Ben Webster in his surroundings — relaxing on a train, traveling on tour, visiting the zoo, talking to his landlady, and playing pool in a smoky bar.
The camera picks up and holds objects that might be excluded from a traditional television documentary, like the vase in the window of Ben's rented room. Yet this is not cinema verité. Any illusion of objectivity or any kind of "psychological" approach becomes shattered by the editing and cinematic rhythm. Until the end, we never see Webster play a number all the way through. The camera always interrupts him and cuts him short, until the end when it seems that the film no longer can contain him. The images constantly stress his size, his proportions, his physical presence, and the energy he uses to move and play. We seem to witness a struggle between the filmmaker and the musician. The filmmaker returns again and again to the ordinary aspects of life — smoking, taking a drink, swearing, being dignified or violent (suggested in the haunting zoo sequence by close ups of ferocious animal faces). The musician is always trying to do what he does best — play jazz. While the filmmaker undermines the "living legend" profile, the musician wins out. I will discuss various noncommutative Laurent phenomena including examples coming from noncommutative triangulations of oriented surfaces. As byproducts of the theory, I will describe new topological invariants of closed oriented surfaces and outline a proof of Laurentness of a noncommutative Kontsevich recursion.

Berenstein on noncommutative cluster algebras (his lecture and my talk are based on our joint work.) In this short documentary Ben Webster is introduced to the world of railway enthusiasm through his new friend and expert Jon Biglowe. Riding shotgun with Jon; Ben sees the madness and passion in model railways, and the thrill of chasing trains around Britain.

Benjamin Francis Webster (March 27, 1909 – September 20, 1973), a.k.a. "The Brute" or "Frog," was an influential American jazz tenor saxophonist. Webster, born in Kansas City, Missouri, was considered one of the three most important "swing tenors" along with Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young. Known affectionately as "The Brute", he had a tough, raspy, and brutal tone on stomps (with his own distinctive growls), yet on ballads he played with warmth and sentiment. Stylistically he was indebted to alto star Johnny Hodges, who, he said, taught him to play his instrument.
Webster learned to play piano and violin at an early age, before learning to play the saxophone, although he did return to the piano from time to time, even recording on the instrument occasionally. Once Budd Johnson showed him some basics on the saxophone, Webster began to play that instrument in the Young Family Band (which at the time included Lester Young). Kansas City at this point was a melting pot from which emerged some of the biggest names in 1930s jazz, and Webster joined Bennie Moten's legendary 1932 band that included Count Basie, Oran Page and Walter Page. This era has been recreated in Robert Altman's film Kansas City.
