Uganda's anti-gay stance
Uganda's anti-gay stance
Social media was a beehive of activity with Uganda trending the most as the news broke about Uganda's anti-gay stance. Those for and against took to their Twitter and Facebook accounts expressing gratitude or disappointment at the President for signing the popular anti-gay bill into law. Desmond Tutu in a statement released today said he was disheartened by the move. "We must be entirely clear about this: the history of people is littered with attempts to legislate against love or marriage across class, caste, and race. But there is no scientific basis or genetic rationale for love. There is only the grace of God...'' UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said: "Disapproval of homosexuality by some can never justify violating the fundamental human rights of others... It is formulated so broadly that it may lead to abuse of power and accusations against anyone, not just LGBT people". Locally, reactions were spontaneous from Anti-Gay activists and MPs who have all welcomed the signing into law the Anti Homosexuality Act. The Bigger Picture Behind Uganda's Horrific Anti-Gay Law
The Bigger Picture Behind Uganda's Horrific Anti-Gay Law
"Uganda's president has signed a controversial anti-gay bill that allows harsh penalties for "homosexual offences", calling them "mercenaries" and "prostitutes". Yoweri Museveni on Monday signed the bill, which holds that homosexuals be jailed for long terms, outlaws the promotion of homosexuality and requires people to denounce gays. He denounced gays and spoke in lurid detail about sexual activity while signing one of the world's toughest anti-gay laws, which has come under fierce criticism from the US president, Barack Obama, who has warned that ties between Kampala and Washington would be damaged. "Homosexuals are actually mercenaries. They are heterosexual people but because of money they say they are homosexuals. These are prostitutes because of money," Musaveni said."* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down. *Read more here from Al Jazeera / Reuters: http://www.aljazeera.com/news/africa/2014/02/ugandan-president-sign-anti-gay-bill-20142245119120579.html ********** The Largest Online News Show in the World. The visiting Swedish Minister of Finance says the law poses a problem to relations of the two countries. This comes just hours after the US condemned the signing of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill by President. After Uganda endorsed anti-gay laws,a section of countries has initiated sanctions on the country
Just a day after Uganda's president Yoweri Museveni endorsed what has been termed as one of the world's toughest anti-gay laws, a section of the international community has initiated sanctions on the country. The Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Norway have lined up a series of sanctions to show uganda just how unhappy they are about the new law. Yup, She's DEFENDING Uganda's Anti-Gay Laws!
"The right-wing women's group Concerned Women for America (CWFA) expressed outrage on Sunday that President Barack Obama condemned a Ugandan anti-LGBT bill that would punish homosexual behavior with lifetime imprisonment. According to the Joe My God blog, CWFA spokesperson Janice Shaw Crouse said that the president's "arrogance is breathtaking" for saying that Ugandan government should stop imprisoning and torturing men it suspects of being gay. On Sunday, Obama released an official White House statement condemning Uganda's proposed law outlawing same sex marriages and imposing lifetime prison sentences for repeated homosexual acts."
