Legacy - The Cradle of Civilization - Iraq: The Origins of Civilization (Documentary)
Please Enjoy. Subscribe & Like too. Thanks. Cheers! This episode explores the history of the world's first cities including Baghdad, Ur, Uruk, Erbil, and Sumer, and the development of law and science in this civilization born on the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates. Wood claims that the great tradition that produced the "pessimistic," "hard-bitten," and "resilient" people of Iraq can best be seen in the marsh Arabs and Mandeans, two groups whose "way of life has been preserved since long before civilization." He further asserts that "after all its achievements, Iraq reached the modern world as a society stopped in time." Oil and, later, the Gulf War (read: interaction with the West) caused profound changes in Iraq and brought them into the modern world. This static picture of Iraqi society is enhanced by the predominance of images of desolate landscapes and ancient settlements. There are few images which show Iraqis engaged in activity and creative processes, and the majority of these images show them dealing with the destruction caused by the Gulf War. As in other episodes, one of Wood's main concerns is spirituality. There are several shots of Muslims praying and studying and the episode ends in a temple devoted to Satan. One may question whether his exploration of spirituality gives viewers a better appreciation of Iraqi society or reinforces notions of Iraqis as irrational, religious fundamentalists. While discussing the history of some of the world's oldest cities and how archaeology contributes to our knowledge of this history, Wood commits a serious archaeological faux pas; he picks up artifacts off the ground, explains their significance, and then walks away from the site with them in hand rather than putting them back where he found them. What message does this send to people who find artifacts while visiting sites? Although the program is meant to dispel Western misconceptions of Iraq, the narrative and images seem to reinforce many of them instead. Origins of Gnosticism: Aeon Byte Gnostic Radio
The transcript of this interview and many others with some of today's best scholars can be found in my book Voices of Gnosticism, available at Amazon and other providers. Perhaps the most debated and intriguing topic in Gnosticism is where it began. Was it a Christian side effect? Did it originate from Persian or other pagan mysteries? Was it just another Jewish heresy? We probe deep into history and theology to find out where exactly the Gnostics sprouted out of in mankind's imagination. Astral Guest—Birger A. Pearson, author of 'Ancient Gnosticism: Traditions and Literature', 'Gnosticism, Judaism and Egyptian Christianity' and one of the original translators of the Nag Hammadi Library (and also the new one by Marvin Meyer). Topics Discussed: --Yet more evidence that Gnosticism not only predates Christianity but is more than likely the first Christianity. --Understanding that the root of all Gnostic philosophy is what is called Classic or Sethian Gnosticism. --How and why the writings of Plato are the bedrock of all Gnostic thought. --The real possibility that the early Gnostics believed that only a small percentage of humans had the Divine Spark (soul). --How Gnosticism peaked when Valentinus reconciled Gnostic theology with the theology of the Catholic Church. --Trying to quell the tide of many scholars not only trying to redefine Gnosticism but erase the term all together. --Birger's story on how he became involved with James Robinson and the Nag Hammadi Project, including his struggles and victories in translating the ancient Coptic manuscripts. --Touching on one of the first and last remaining Gnostics of history—The Mandeans. And much more! It's very hard to speak to someone closer to the Gnostic ground zero than Birger.- published: 12 Oct 2013

Anfal - From Tears to Hope 25th Anniversary of the Kurdish Genocide
Anfal - From Tears to Hope 25th Anniversary of the Kurdish Genocide
The al-Anfal Campaign (Arabic: حملة الأنفال), also known as the Kurdish Genocide,Operation Anfal or simply Anfal, was a genocidal campaign against the Kurdish people (and other non-Arab populations) in northern Iraq, led by the Ba'athist Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and headed by Ali Hassan al-Majid in the final stages of Iran-Iraq War. The campaign takes its name from Surat al-Anfal in the Qur'an, which was used as a code name by the former Iraqi Baathist government for a series of systematic attacks against the Kurdish population of northern Iraq, conducted between 1986 and 1989 and culminating in 1988. The campaign also targeted other minority communities in Iraq including Assyrians, Shabaks, Iraqi Turkmens, Yazidis, Jews, Mandeans, and many villages belonging to these ethnic groups were also destroyed. Sweden, Norway and U.K. officially recognize the Anfal campaign as genocide. On December 5, 2012, Swedish parliament Riksdag adopted a resolution by the Green party to officially recognize Anfal as genocide. The resolution was passed by all 349 members of parliament. On February 28, 2013, British House of Commons formally recognized the Anfal as genocide following a campaign led by Conservative MP Nadhim Zahawi.
