Don R. Kania (BS '77, BSE NE '77, MSE '79, MS '80, PhD NE '81) 2013 Alumni Merit Award Recipient - Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences Dr. Don Kania has made an impressive journey from research to leadership of an innovative nanotechnology company. Dr. Kania is the president of FEI, and also serves as a director of the company. FEI, based in Oregon, designs, manufactures, and supports high-performance microscopy workflows that provide images in the micro-, nano-, and picometer scales. The global firm has more than 2,700 employees. Prior to joining FEI, Dr. Kania held positions of increasing responsibility at Veeco Instruments Inc., culminating in serving as President and Chief Operating Officer of the company. He was also a senior manager at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he directed the Advanced Microtechnology Program. The mission was the development of advanced sensors for data storage. In addition to his professional responsibilities, Dr. Kania serves on the Board of Trustees of the Oregon Health & Science University Foundation and on the Board of Trustees of Pacific University. He is a member of the North American Board of Directors of SEMI, a global industry association serving the manufacturing supply chains for the microelectronic, display and photovoltaic industries. The eruption on Nov. 19th has had little effect on Earth because the flare site is near the Sun's SW limb where a cluster of non-Earth facing sunspots is rotating off the Earthside of the Sun.
