The 17th Century Kings of Zangla Palace, Zanskar
The 17th Century Kings of Zangla Palace, Zanskar
www.TravelsWithSheila.com Zangla was once the former capital of Zanskar and had three Royal Palaces that belonged to the Kings of Zanskar descended from Kings of Tibet. The oldest palace that I'll call Palace #1 is over 2000 years old, just a big ruin. Palace #2, the one in this video, has a very beautiful, sacred prayer hall. Sacred because the Head Lama of Ladakh was born here twice. (I got so lost during recitations about Rimpoche Lamas...reincarnations...who was born where.) The 21 year old Prince of Zanskar happened to be present and graciously told about his family, lineage, reincarnations. Even more "Lost in Translation" moments for Travels With Sheila... Perhaps you'll understand what he was saying.

Chadar, the frozen path to Zangla, 2011
A winter trip to visit Zangla Palace hidden in the Indian Himalaya, in the remote Zanskar valley, on the ice of the partially frozen Zanskar river. The Palace of the former Zangla Kings used to be the place where Alexander Csoma de Kőrös, a Hungarian pioneer of science, the founder of Tibetology commenced his work on the first English-Tibetan Dictionary. Csoma's Room Foundation is doing some emergency interventions and restoration works on the palace since 2008 every summer, with volunteers. When the journalist traveling with us almost fell into the river it was a true situation, but the camera wasn't on, so we reconstructed it later in the studio. We left it look a bit fake to keep it honest.

The 16th Century Kings of Zangla Palace, Zanskar
www.TravelsWithSheila.com Ruins of the 16th century Palace are visible on a hill for miles around. Driver could only go so far on a dusty, bumpy road before before letting us out to walk up the remaining distance. Through a sacred stupa with remains of faded, ancient frescoes in the inside upper section. This Palace was the original part of Zangla at one time and remains of the palace complex also enclosed a village. Inside, up ladders where a group from Hungary is working on restoration. An afterthought - Why, oh why, did we bother wearing clean clothes today? You would think we were working on the restoration...

Taranto Love [stagione 1996/1997]
Taranto Love [stagione 1996/1997]
