The cuts are unfortunate as they communicate ideas that are critical for the public to properly understand wildland fire. For all the sordid details, please continue reading... The California Chaparral Institute was part of a fire science video this past year produced by the federal government's premier science agency, the USGS. It turned out really well. Many of foremost chaparral scientists are in it sharing all the new research that is helping change the way we deal with wildland fire. Unfortunately, half of this excellent, comprehensive science film was edited out prior to its final release. Why? Well, shorter is usually better, but in this case there was an additional, more ominous reason. But first, what was cut? Removed from the film are many of the most important points fire scientists in California have been making for the past ten years including, - How chaparral is threatened by too much fire - That the chaparral's natural fire return interval is 30-130 years + - That large fires are a natural part of the California landscape - How miles upon miles of dense chaparral decorating California's hills and mountains is natural - How chaparral clearance projects often create more flammable conditions by filling in with weeds - Research showing that the most important factor in home ignition is the litter from overhanging trees - The impact of fires on wildlife - The importance of understanding the chaparral ecosystem... it's part of our heritage - And our pesky insistence that old-growth chaparral is beautiful So why were these important points cut? Our presence in the film and the discussion of these points apparently did not please some of the folks in the California wildland fire establishment who are strong supporters of habitat clearance. We'll take all this attention as a compliment. Still, we are disappointed that politics continues to have such a powerful influence on how science is communicated. The epicenter was in Orange County near Fullerton, but it rattled residents in nearby areas as well, including Hollywood Hills. The shaking could be felt for about 15 seconds. The USGS had earlier reported it as a 5.4-magnitude, but later downgraded it to 5.1. The epicenter of the temblor was one mile east of La Habra and four miles north of Fullerton, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Firefighters in La Habra were urged to move to designated areas and initiate a survey of their districts. "We have not heard of damage or injuries as of yet," Orange County Sheriff Lt. Paul Fuzzard said. Hours before, a 3.6-magnitude tremor hit the same spot, according to the USGS. Over a week ago, a 4.4-magnitude quake hit about 15 miles north of downtown Los Angeles at around dawn. Friday's quake was stronger and shook longer. Twenty years ago, a 6.7-magnitude killed 57 people in the greater Los Angeles area and caused $42 billion in damage.
