Fred 'Punchy' Griffiths (born in Rhodesia — died Tuesday 18 April 2000 in Perth, Western Australia) was a professional rugby league footballer of the 1950s and '60s, and coach of the 1960s. A South Africa international representative back, he played his club football in England for Wigan and in Australia for North Sydney, who he also captained and coached.
A Fullback and skillful goal-kicker, Griffiths, nicknamed "Punchy", kicked six goals in Wigan's victory in the 1959–60 Northern Rugby Football League season's championship final. In his time with the club he amassed a total of 1,455 points.
Moving to Australia to captain and coach the North Sydney club, Griffiths' prolific point-scoring continued as he went on to become the New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership's leading point scorer for the 1963, 1964 and 1965 seasons. His last year with North Sydney was the 1966 season. In his time with North Sydney he amassed a total of 590 points, and coached them to finals in two of his three seasons as captain-coach.
Frederick Griffith (c. 1879–1941) was a British bacteriologist whose focus was the epidemiology and pathology of bacterial pneumonia. In January 1928 he reported what is now known as Griffith's Experiment, the first widely accepted demonstrations of bacterial transformation, whereby a bacterium distinctly changes its form and function.
He showed that Streptococcus pneumoniae, implicated in many cases of lobar pneumonia, could transform from one strain into a different strain. The observation was attributed to an unidentified transforming principle or transforming factor. This was later identified as DNA.
America's leading pneumococcal researcher, Oswald T. Avery, speculated that Griffith had failed to apply adequate controls. A cautious and thorough researcher, and a reticent individual, Griffith's tendency was to publish only findings that he believed truly significant, and Griffith's findings were rapidly confirmed by researchers in Avery's laboratory. His discovery was one of the first to show the central role of DNA in heredity.
Sir (Samuel Henry) William Llewellyn (1858–1941) was a notable English painter of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and served as President of the Royal Academy from 1928 to 1938.
