Warlords of Tripoli (Part 1/5)
Part 2 coming soon. Click here to subscribe to VICE News: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The war in Syria is dragging neighbouring Lebanon to the edge of the abyss, and nowhere is the growing chaos more stark than in the second city of Tripoli. Sunni militants aligned with the Syrian rebels frequently clash with fighters from the city's encircled Alawite minority, who support the Assad regime, in bitter street fighting the country's weak government is powerless to stop. With the rule of law no longer in effect in Tripoli, warlords like Sunni commander Ziad Allouki are now the city's real rulers, so VICE hung out with him and his fighters for a week to discover why they're fighting, and whether the country really is on the brink of civil war. http://vicenews.com Follow VICE News here Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/vicenews Twitter: https://twitter.com/vicenews Tumblr: http://vicenews.tumblr.com/- published: 03 Feb 2014

Lebanon: Tripoli's Residents Trapped in Sectarian Violence
The conflict in neighboring Syria has severely aggravated existing sectarian tensions in Tripoli, where intermittent violence has persisted between the hilltop Alawite neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen and the Sunni neighborhoods that completely surround it, including Bab al-Tabbaneh, since May 2008. Hundreds of both Sunni and Alawite residents have been the main victims, but Jabal Mohsen residents are especially vulnerable.- published: 20 Dec 2013

The Syrian Spillover: Lebanon (Dispatch One)
Combat between Sunnis and Shiites in the streets of Tripoli, Lebanon is escalating as the civil war bleeds over Syria's border into its smaller neighbor. Further exacerbating the conflict, Lebanon has absorbed a reported 1.5 million Syrian refugees. In the wake of a recent spate of car bombs and the tense buildup to the Geneva II convention, Vice News reporter Robert King went to Tripoli to speak with a Sunni Sheikh about how hard the conflict is hitting the Lebanese. Elder Zacharias regarding the Spiritual Life
Archimandrite Zacharias, Ph. D., is a disciple of Elder Sophrony (of blessed memory), who was a disciple of St. Silouan of Mount Athos. Presently, Fr. Zacharias is a monk in the Monastery founded by Elder Sophrony: The Patriarchal Stavropegic Monastery of St. John the Baptist, Tolleshunt Knights by Maldon, Essex, England.
Fr. Zacharias was born and raised in Cyprus in an Orthodox Christian family. His mother became a nun toward the end of her life. As a young man, Fr. Zacharias left Cyprus to study Chemistry in London. Before he completed his studies, he became acquainted with Father Sophrony and his Monastery. Fr. Zacharias abandoned his studies in Chemistry and preferred instead to answer God’s calling and follow the monastic way of life in the Orthodox Church.
Elder Sophrony sent Fr. Zacharias to study at the Theological Institute of St. Serge in Paris where he spent five years, and then moved to Thessalonica for a further fourteen months, in order to obtain a second degree in Theology. Fr. Zacharias is fluent in Greek, Russian, French and English, and has translated Father Sophrony’s books from Russian into Greek.
Elder Sophrony gave Father Zacharias the blessing to write a doctoral dissertation under Professor George Mantzarides (who is a leading authority in Christian ethics in the Orthodox world) entitled Christ, Our Way and Our Life, published by St. Tikhon’s Seminary Press. He is also the author of The Enlargement of the Heart, and The Hidden Man of the Heart (1 Peter 3:4): The Cultivation of the Heart in Orthodox Christian Anthropology, both of which have been enthusiastically received throughout the English-speaking world, and beyond.
Fr. Zacharias has lectured in various places around the world on the theology of St. Silouan the Athonite and Elder Sophrony. He has lectured at St. John of Damascus Institute of Theology at the University of Balamand in Tripoly, Lebanon, as well as at Cambridge in England, in Finland, Greece, Romania, and Bulgaria. Fr. Zacharias was the inaugural guest speaker of the first lecture series devoted to St. Silouan and Elder Sophrony in the English-speaking world at St. Tikhon’s Monastery in September 1997. Fr. Zacharias also spoke to the clergy in private session and has led retreats in the Antiochian Archdiocese under Bishop Basil of Wichita in 2001 and 2007. He was also invited by the Athonite Monastery of Vatopedi to be the keynote speaker at the first International Conference held in Athens in October of 2007 devoted exclusively to the life and work of Elder Sophrony of Essex.

Turntables in the camps
Help the Palestinian refugees getting their message out to the world by spreading this video. I know that this video or project will not solve their situation, but at least they get the chance to be heard... Please Forward the link, embed it on facebook or post it on twitter...
Turntables in the Camps is a project focused on the inclusion of young Palestinian refugees in the global youth culture of DJ-ing and the creation of electronic music.
To facilitate this the project conducts workshops and sets up permanent local dj schools for refugee boys and girls in order to show that everybody can be a DJ or an MC no matter where they are from.
Turntables in the Camps was made to spread the means for musical creativity, break down boundaries and to creating a window to the world for marginalized refugee youth.
Builded on the experience of the pilot project, Martin F. Jakobsen, raised money through the Danish Center for Culture and Development in order to establish three permanent dj schools in Lebanon and Jordan and conduct DJ and rap workshops for Palestinian refugee youth. The second part of the project was initiated in September 2010 in cooperation with the Danish artists Den Sorte Skole, Ladybox and MC Tia, the Palestinian Rappers TNT and MC Sam. On the programme was two weeks of workshops for more than 100 Palestinian girls and boys aged 13 – 20, and the establishment of DJ schools in Beirut, Nahr el Bared near Tripoli, and the Jabal el-Hussein Camp in Amman driven by local NGOs and volunteers.

17 injured in Lebanon clashes
Clashes erupted in the Lebanese port city on Saturday, after Lebanese Internal Security Forces (ISF) summoned Ali Eid, the leader of Alawite community, for questioning over twin blasts that hit Tripoli in August. Eid has denied receiving any summons and refused to appear in court. His son, Refaat Eid, who is the secretary general of Lebanon's Arab Democratic Party, denied any link to the bombings and expressed distrust in the Lebanese intelligence system. Sheikh Assad Assi, the president of the Alawite Islamic Council, has warned the ISF against summoning Ali Eid, calling the move an insult to the Shia Alawite community. Meanwhile, the Sunni Future Bloc has called on the ISF to arrest Ali Eid by force if he disobeys the judicial order. According to a Lebanese judicial source, summoning Eid for questioning comes after his driver, Ahmad Mohammad Ali, confessed to smuggling one of the suspects behind the Tripoli blasts into Syria. Refaat Eid has denied involvement. Tripoli has witnessed clashes between supporters and opponents of the Syrian government since the beginning of the unrest in Syria more than two years ago. The clashes have been concentrated in the Bab al-Tibbaneh and Jabal Mohsen neighborhoods of Tripoli. Bab al-Tibbaneh residents are against the government in Damascus, and the people of Jabal Mohsen support the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.- published: 03 Nov 2013

18+ Hezbollah Terror Gang Blows Up Sunni Mosque in Tripoli - Dozens Massacred 8-24-13 طرابلس : تسجيل من داخل مسجد السلام لحظة وقوع الانفجار TRIPOLI, Lebanon (Reuters) - Bombs hit two mosques in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli on Friday, killing at least 42 people and wounding hundreds, intensifying sectarian strife that has spilled over from the civil war in neighboring Syria. The apparently coordinated blasts - the biggest and deadliest in Tripoli since the end of Lebanon's own civil war - struck as locals were finishing Friday prayers in the largely Sunni Muslim city. Lebanese officials appealed for calm. The explosions in Tripoli, 70 km (40 miles) from the capital Beirut, came a week after a huge car bomb killed at least 24 people in a part of Beirut controlled by the Shi'ite Muslim militant movement Hezbollah. A recent resurgence of sectarian violence in Lebanon has been stoked by the conflagration in Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad is fighting a largely Sunni-led rebellion. Both Hezbollah and radical Sunni groups in Lebanon have sent fighters over the border to support opposing sides in Syria. Medical and security sources said the death toll from Friday's blasts in Tripoli had risen to 42 by late afternoon. Hundreds more were wounded, they said. The first explosion hit the Taqwa mosque, frequented by hardline Sunni Islamists, and killed at least 14 people there, according to accounts earlier in the day. Further deaths were reported from a second blast a few minutes later outside the al-Salam mosque, which the Interior Ministry said was hit by a car laden with 100 kg (220 pounds) of explosives. A Reuters reporter at the scene said the blast left a huge crater and the floors of the mosque were covered in blood. A 50-metre (160-foot) stretch of the road was charred black and the twisted remains of cars littered the area. Deadly blasts hit Lebanon's TripoliPlay video."Deadly blasts hit Lebanon's Tripoli "We were just bowing down to pray for the second time and the bomb went off. The air cleared, and I looked around me and saw bodies," said Samir Jadool, 39. Lebanon's Red Cross said more than 500 people were wounded in the two explosions. Television footage showed people running through the streets, some of them carrying bloodied victims. Near the Taqwa mosque blast site, angry men toting AK-47 assault rifles took to the streets and fired in the air while other men threw rocks at Lebanese soldiers nearby. "Back off," said one militant, when journalists approached the scene. Soldiers peeked out at the mosque from a nearby base but did not approach it. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the bombings and called on all Lebanese people to "exercise restraint, to remain united, and to support their state institutions, particularly the security forces". "BEGINNING OF THE STORM" Witnesses at the scene of the blasts said anger was rising among locals, who were shouting out accusations that Assad's government or Hezbollah were behind the attack. "This is the work of a criminal," seethed Jadool, who held a bloodied bandage against his head, the result of flying debris from the blast at the al-Salam mosque. Video obtained by local news channel LBC showed the moment of the explosion at al-Salam mosque. The blast ripped through a wall of the mosque, showering clouds of dust on people sitting on prayer mats and sending dozens running out of the building. Israel bombs Lebanon in retaliation for rocket fir ...Play video."Israel bombs Lebanon in retaliation for rocket fir ... Lebanese officials called for calm as tensions rose in Tripoli, a Mediterranean port that has seen some of the worst Syria spillover violence. Sunni gunmen have sporadically clashed with fighters from the city's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam to which the Assad family belongs. Former internal security chief Ashraf Rifi, whose home was damaged by the second blast, warned Lebanon was facing a growing threat. "We are still in the beginning of the storm and we must remain aware and try to protect this nation," he said, speaking outside his home. "This storm has become a huge, grave danger." Officials in Tripoli called on the government in a joint statement to step up security in the city. Mohammed Kabara, a member of parliament who read out the statement, accused the Syrian government of carrying out the Beirut and Tripoli bombings to create strife in Lebanon. Prominent Salafist sheik, Dai al-Islam Shahhal, also blamed the Syrian government for the Tripoli bombs and said it was "pure terrorism". Hezbollah's political opponents called on the group to withdraw its forces from Syria in response to Friday's attack. .
