In 2014, the largest corruption scandal in Latin America’s history erupted in Brazil. It involved bribes between Petrobras, the largest state-owned oil company on the continent, and dozens of engineering firms. It also involved politicians, including three Brazilian presidents, Lula, Dilma Rousseff, and Michel Temer, as well as almost a third of Brazil’s congress.
Politicians all over Latin America were found guilty of taking bribes and profiting immensely from infrastructure and energy projects all over the continent. The scandal hit places like Itaborai especially hard. The companies involved were fined billions of dollars and laid off hundreds of thousands of workers as their projects abruptly stopped. Four years later, Brazil is still dealing with the fallout.

- Petrobras operates in 3 business areas: the first is Exploration & Production, the second is Refining Transportation & Mktg and the third is Gas & Power. It controls significant oil and energy assets all around the world although, Brazil represents a majority of its production. It provides the majority of Brazil’s oil and gas.
- It has large amount of reserves mostly located in Brazil in order optimize its infrastructure and limit costs of exploration, development and production. It has developed technical knowledge in deep-water exploration and production from almost 50 years of working in Brazil’s offshore basins. It does go beyond oil and gas exploration and production. It transports oil and gas to its refineries and gas treatment units in order to supply the best products. A majority of the refining capacity is in Brazil. It is also involved in the production of petrochemicals through its subsidiaries. It distributes oil products through wholesalers and retailers. It also participates in the Brazilian natural gas market, including the logistics, distribution and processing of natural gas. It is trying to get heavily involved in renewable energy.

Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. — Petrobras, more commonly known as simply Petrobras (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˌpɛtɾoˈbɾas]), is a semi-public Brazilian multinational energy corporation headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is the largest company in the Southern Hemisphere by market capitalization and the largest in Latin America measured by 2011 revenues. The company's name translates to Brazilian Petroleum Corporation — Petrobras.
Petrobras was founded in 1953. While the company ceased to be Brazil's legal monopolist in the oil industry in 1997, it remains a significant oil producer, with output of more than 2 million barrels (320,000 m3) of oil equivalent per day. The company owns oil refineries, oil tankers, and is a major distributor of oil products. Petrobras is a world leader in development of advanced technology from deep-water and ultra-deep water oil production.
In September 2010, Petrobras conducted the largest share sale in history, when US$72.8 billion worth of shares in the company were sold on the BM&F Bovespa stock exchange. Upon the sale, Petrobras immediately became the fourth-largest company in the world measured by market capitalization. In 2008, Petrobras surpassed Microsoft, making it the third largest in the Americas by market value, according to the consulting firm Economática. In the same year, the state became the third most profitable company in the Americas, except Canada, surpassing Vale.

Petrobras 36
Petrobras 36 (P-36) was at the time the largest floating semi-submersible oil platform in the world prior to its sinking on 20 March 2001. It was owned by Petrobras, a semi-public Brazilian oil company headquartered in Rio de Janeiro. The cost of the platform was US$350 million (currently US$468 million).
The vessel was built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Genoa, Italy in 1995 as a drilling rig. She was owned then by Società Armamento Navi Appoggio S.p.A. The 33,000 tonnes (36,000 short tons) rig was converted by Davie Industry, Levis, Canada to the world's largest oil production platform.
P-36 was operating for Petrobras on the Roncador Oil Field, 130 kilometres (80 mi) off the Brazilian coast, producing about 84,000 barrels (13,400 m3) of crude per day.
P-36 was replaced by FPSO-Brasil which is a leased vessel from SBM Offshore. The FPSO-Brasil started its lease contract with Petrobras in December 2002.
Accident
In the early hours of March 15, 2001 there were two explosions in the aft starboard column at or around the emergency drain tank. The first explosion was caused by an overpressure event, the second by ignition of leaking hydrocarbon vapor. At the time there were 175 people on the rig; 11 were killed. Following the explosions, the rig developed a 16° list, sufficient to allow down-flooding from the submerged fairlead boxes.

Transocean Ltd. is one of the world's largest offshore drilling contractors. The Swiss-based company rents floating mobile drill rigs, along with the equipment and personnel for operations, to oil and gas companies at an average daily rate of US$282,700 (2010). Transocean's day rates extend as high as US$650,000 for its deep-water drillships, which house dual activity derricks and can drill in ultra-deep ocean depths of 10,000 ft (3,000 m). In 2010, Transocean has been implicated in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill resulting from the explosion of one of its oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.
Transocean employs more than 18,000 people worldwide and has a fleet of 135 offshore drilling units and two ultra-deepwater units under construction, as of December 2011. The company is based in Vernier, Switzerland near Geneva, and has offices in 20 countries, including Switzerland, Canada, United States, Norway, Scotland, Brazil, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. The firm owns nearly half of the 50 or so deepwater platforms in the world.

- Petrobras operates in 3 business areas: the first is Exploration & Production, the second is Refining Transportation & Mktg and the third is Gas & Power. It controls significant oil and energy assets all around the world although, Brazil represents a majority of its production. It provides the majority of Brazil’s oil and gas.
- It has large amount of reserves mostly located in Brazil in order optimize its infrastructure and limit costs of exploration, development and production. It has developed technical knowledge in deep-water exploration and production from almost 50 years of working in Brazil’s offshore basins. It does go beyond oil and gas exploration and production. It transports oil and gas to its refineries and gas treatment units in order to supply the best products. A majority of the refining capacity is in Brazil. It is also involved in the production of petrochemicals through its subsidiaries. It distributes oil products through wholesalers and retailers. It also participates in the Brazilian natural gas market, including the logistics, distribution and processing of natural gas. It is trying to get heavily involved in renewable energy.

In 2014, the largest corruption scandal in Latin America’s history erupted in Brazil. It involved bribes between Petrobras, the largest state-owned oil company on the continent, and dozens of engineering firms. It also involved politicians, including three Brazilian presidents, Lula, Dilma Rousseff, and Michel Temer, as well as almost a third of Brazil’s congress.
Politicians all over Latin America were found guilty of taking bribes and profiting immensely from infrastructure and energy projects all over the continent. The scandal hit places like Itaborai especially hard. The companies involved were fined billions of dollars and laid off hundreds of thousands of workers as their projects abruptly stopped. Four years later, Brazil is still dealing with the fallout.

Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. — Petrobras, more commonly known as simply Petrobras (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˌpɛtɾoˈbɾas]), is a semi-public Brazilian multinational energy corporation headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is the largest company in the Southern Hemisphere by market capitalization and the largest in Latin America measured by 2011 revenues. The company's name translates to Brazilian Petroleum Corporation — Petrobras.
Petrobras was founded in 1953. While the company ceased to be Brazil's legal monopolist in the oil industry in 1997, it remains a significant oil producer, with output of more than 2 million barrels (320,000 m3) of oil equivalent per day. The company owns oil refineries, oil tankers, and is a major distributor of oil products. Petrobras is a world leader in development of advanced technology from deep-water and ultra-deep water oil production.
In September 2010, Petrobras conducted the largest share sale in history, when US$72.8 billion worth of shares in the company were sold on the BM&F Bovespa stock exchange. Upon the sale, Petrobras immediately became the fourth-largest company in the world measured by market capitalization. In 2008, Petrobras surpassed Microsoft, making it the third largest in the Americas by market value, according to the consulting firm Economática. In the same year, the state became the third most profitable company in the Americas, except Canada, surpassing Vale.
