Learn more at: http://depts.washington.edu/sphsc/academicprograms/audiology/audiology.shtml Video Transcript: [Kelly] University of Washington boasts probably one of the largest scientific communities that is dedicated to the prevention of hearing loss, the restoration of hearing following hearing loss, early intervention, neuroscience as it relates to rehabilitation. We're actively involved in science that will change the field tomorrow. [Homira] Throughout the years, taking different courses and interacting with different faculty members has shifted my focus into the area of pediatric auditory habilitation. [Sarah] I'm originally from California and Seattle has so much to offer. Just in terms of there's great music, there's great food, there's lots of outdoor activities to do, and it's just absolutely beautiful so, yeah, I love it here. [Kelly] We benefit as being part of WICHE, which stands for the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education, and what that means is that students from Western states can apply to programs within the WICHOE network and receive the benefits that come from instate status so that includes tuition. [Kelly] It's a large enough city that provides students with the opportunity to experience clinical placements in diverse populations. [Sarah] In my first day of clinic, my supervisor asked me how I learn best. She asked, "Do you like to observe first, or would you rather me push you and have you do more hands on experience?" You become engaged in more and more clinic per week as the quarters progress. And then in your second year, you have an in-house clinic in addition to an observational clinic in various areas of audiology. So there's one in a private practice setting, one in an educational audiology school district, there's medical settings. And so through all of that it's given me an opportunity to try and decide where my area of focus is while exposing to me to a lot of broad areas. [Kelly] Many of these instructors or lecturers are also PhD's and so they're scientists. So not only are they able to teach the students how to do things, they can also give that overarching perspective that research brings to it. [Homira] Being able to take what we learned from clinic and apply it to research and the other way around has helped me become a better clinician. For example, we have three to four courses on amplification and having a clinic that is specialized in hearing aids and cochlear implants has given me more exposure into troubleshooting, into fitting in diagnostics. So it's been really helpful to connect what we've learned in class with patients in clinic. [Kelly] Because we're the one of the top ranked schools in the country, our students are often recruited for jobs before they even graduate. I think as an employer it's important to know whoever you're bringing on has the credentials and the quality and training to hit the ground running. [Homira] Ideally, what I would want to be after all my schooling is to work in a setting where I can engage in research and still see patients because I am really passionate about being in clinic. [Sarah] I would love to one day be in a leadership position in terms of making decisions about the clinical evidence based practice, and reading research in order to change the protocols of a clinic. I know that I'm still getting the tools here to be able to do that in the future. [Kelly] There's nothing that that compares to the joy of being in the classroom and working with students. You can see their hunger for knowledge and their motivation to make the world a better place.
