The Gem Theatre in Detroit (built 1927) houses a two level theatre with traditional row and aisle seating and intimate stage-level seating at cabaret tables. It shares a lobby with the cabaret style Century Theatre (built 1903). The theatre has stylings of Spanish Revival architecture. The structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

In 1902, the Twentieth Century Club, a group of cultural, socially prominent women, built a Mission-style building to house their club. The building, now the Century Theatre, is built of red brick trimmed with white sandstone. The first floor originally housed a dining room, while the second floor housed a 400-seat auditorium.

In 1928, the member of the Century club contracted George D. Mason to design a theater addition to the Century Club building. The resulting Spanish Revival-style building was leased to the Little Theatre chain, which showed foreign films, and the building was known as the Little Theatre.

In 1933, due to the Depression, the Twentieth Century Club disbanded. The Little Theatre, however, continued, suffering through several name changes, becoming The Rivoli in 1932, Drury Lane (and then the Europa in 1935, the Cinema in 1936, and the Vanguard Playhouse in 1960. The Vanguard offered live theater rather than movies.

David Ryan Adams (born November 5, 1974) is an American alt-country/rock singer-songwriter, from Jacksonville, North Carolina. Initially part of the group Whiskeytown, which was earlier considered one of the leaders of the alt-country genre, Adams left the band and released his first solo album Heartbreaker in 2000. The album was nominated for the Shortlist Music Prize. Adams has released six additional solo albums, including the UK certified-gold Gold, and five albums with The Cardinals.

Adams has also produced albums for Jesse Malin and Willie Nelson and collaborated with the Counting Crows, Weezer, Norah Jones, America, Minnie Driver, Cowboy Junkies, Leona Naess, Toots & the Maytals, Beth Orton and Krista Polvere. He has written a book of poems, Infinity Blues, and Hello Sunshine, a collection of poems and short stories. In 2009 Adams married singer-songwriter and actress Mandy Moore, left The Cardinals and announced that he was taking a break from music.

Adams resumed performing in October 2010 and released his thirteenth studio album, Ashes & Fire, on October 11, 2011. The album peaked at #7 on the Billboard 200.

Maurice Hayes (born 8 July 1927) is an Irish politician and was an independent member of the 21st and 22nd Seanads, nominated as a senator by the Taoiseach.

Maurice Hayes was born in County Down in Northern Ireland.

After completing a PhD in English at Queen's University, he taught at St Patrick's Grammar School in Downpatrick. He left teaching to become Town Clerk of Downpatrick the administrative centre of the county, succeeding his father in the role.

In the troubled politics of Northern Ireland, where political parties tend to be sharply split along religious lines, Hayes has been viewed as an even-handed observer, who has written or contributed to major policy reports, such as the Patten Commission dealing with reforms to the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC), the police force later renamed the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).

He has written numerous pieces of journalism and writes regularly for the Irish Independent. He is the author of three books of memoirs, Sweet Killough: Let Go Your Anchor; Black Puddings with Slim: A Downpatrick Boyhood; and Minority Verdict: Experiences Of A Catholic Civil Servant. He is also the author or editor of works on conflict research, community relations and Irish writing.
