25 Sobering Statistics On Global Poverty That Might Upset You
Everyone knows there is poverty in the world. But what exactly does that mean? These are 25 sobering statistics on global poverty that might upset you. https://twitter.com/list25 https://www.facebook.com/list25 http://list25.com Check out the text version too! - http://list25.com/25-sobering-statistics-on-global-poverty-that-might-upset-you Here's a preview: At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 per day To put things into perspective, the top 20% of the world's population accounts for three quarters of the world's income Half of the world's population accounts for only 5% of the world's income According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die every day due to poverty Nearly one third of children in developing countries are estimated to be underweight or stunted Last year, about 70 million children of primary school age were not in school Nearly a billion people celebrated the coming of the 21st century without being able to read a book or sign their name Preventable diseases like Malaria afflict nearly 500 million people every year Africa alone accounts for roughly 1 million deaths due to Malaria annually. Most of them are children Speaking of children, there are 2.2 billion children in the world. Half of them live in extreme poverty Over 1 billion people have inadequate access to water and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation. Many times this means no separation of drinking water and toilet water. That is why 1.8 million children die every year of diarrhoea Approximately half of the world's population now lives in cities and about one third of those in the cities live in slum conditions In fact, slum growth is outpacing urban growth by a frighteningly large margin One quarter of humanity lives without electricity The 7 richest people in the world make more than the poorest 41 countries combined (roughly 567 million people) .14% of the world population own over 80% of the world's private financial wealth. The vast majority of that wealth has managed to avoid all income and estate taxes, either by the countries where it has been invested or where it comes from. For every $1 in aid that a developing country receives, over $25 is spent on debt repayment. The poorer the country, the more likely it is that the debt repayments are being extracted directly from the people who neither contracted the loans nor received any money In 1998 $8 billion dollars was spent on cosmetics in the United States, $11 billion was spent on ice cream in the European Union, $17 billion was spent on pet food in Europe and the US, $100 billion was spent on alcohol in Europe, $400 billion was spent on narcotics globally, and $780 billion was spent on militaries around the world. In the same year $6 billion was spent on achieving basic education for all, $9 billion was spent on basic water and sanitation for all, and $13 billion was spent on basic health and nutrition for all If you are reading this list then you are in the top 30% of the world's population when it comes to poverty and wealth With new technologies we now grow enough food to feed 10 billion people or 1.5 times the world population. The problem is that most of the world can't afford to buy that food. If the world spent less than 1% of what it spends on weapons all the previously mentioned issues would be fixed- published: 24 Dec 2013

If work in each family were raised to 2,000 hours per year-the equivalent of one adult working 40 hours per week throughout the year- nearly 75 percent of poor children would be lifted out of official poverty. Father absence is another major cause of child poverty. Nearly two-thirds of poor children reside in single-parent homes; each year, an additional 1.5 million children are born out of wedlock. If poor mothers married the fathers of their children, almost three-quarters would immediately be lifted out of poverty. Each year, the U.S. imports, through both legal and illegal immigration, hundreds of thousands of additional poor persons from abroad. As a result, one-quarter of all poor persons in the U.S. are now first-generation immigrants or the minor children of those immigrants. Roughly one in ten of the persons counted among the poor by the Census Bureau is either an illegal immigrant or the minor child of an illegal. In the late 1990s, the United States established a reasonable record in reducing child poverty. Successful anti-poverty policies were partially implemented in the welfare reform legislation of 1996, which replaced the old Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program with a new program called Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF). In general, children born and raised outside marriage are seven times more likely to live in poverty than are children born and raised by married couples. "Religion has a big influence on giving patterns," said the Chronicle. "Regions of the country that are deeply religious are more generous than those that are not." http://www.ethicsdaily.com/republican-states-give-more-to-charity-than-democratic-states-cms-19923 -- Although liberal families' incomes average 6 percent higher than those of conservative families, conservative-headed households give, on average, 30 percent more to charity than the average liberal-headed household ($1,600 per year vs. $1,227). -- Conservatives also donate more time and give more blood. -- Residents of the states that voted for John Kerry in 2004 gave smaller percentages of their incomes to charity than did residents of states that voted for George Bush. -- Bush carried 24 of the 25 states where charitable giving was above average. -- In the 10 reddest states, in which Bush got more than 60 percent majorities, the average percentage of personal income donated to charity was 3.5. Residents of the bluest states, which gave Bush less than 40 percent, donated just 1.9 percent. -- People who reject the idea that "government has a responsibility to reduce income inequality" give an average of four times more than people who accept that proposition. Democrats represent a majority of the wealthiest congressional districts, and half of America's richest households live in states where both senators are Democrats. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/03/conservatives_more_liberal_giv.html http://www.heritage.org/research/reports/2007/08/how-poor-are-americas-poor-examining-the-plague-of-poverty-in-america Stefan Molyneux's Social Media Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stefan.molyneux Twitter: https://twitter.com/stefanmolyneux Google+: https://www.google.com/+StefanMolyneux_Freedomain_Radio Linked In: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/stefan-molyneux/5/72a/703 Freedomain Radio Social Media Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Official.Freedomain.Radio Twitter: https://twitter.com/freedomainradio Google+: https://www.google.com/+FreedomainradioFDR LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/company/freedomain-radio Message Board: http://board.freedomainradio.com Meet-Up Groups: http://www.meetup.com/Freedomain-Radio/ Blogspot: http://freedomain.blogspot.com/ iTunes Podcasts: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/freedomain-radio!-volume-6/id552010683- published: 09 Jan 2014

Poverty in Australia (ABC Documentary) 2013
Australia's economy - and unemployment rate - might be the envy of countries around the world, but it doesn't mean poverty and unemployment have been eradicated. Welfare agencies say that many individuals and families are just one or two pay cheques away from financial disaster and homelessness. Worse still, with the mining boom coming off the boil, experts predict more people will find themselves out of work. Next on Four Corners, reporter Geoff Thompson finds out what it's like to lose your job, your home and find yourself dependent on welfare. What he discovers is sobering. Ironically, while economic growth is generally good news, it's also pushed up the cost of living, making life for the unemployed even tougher. A Senate Inquiry report released this month concluded the current unemployment benefit is set too low. For many of the people Four Corners spoke to, accommodation absorbs most of their money, even with additional payments for rent assistance. Running a car and eating nutritious meals becomes close to an impossible dream. The result? Their world contracts and they can find themselves cut off from society. Spending time with private charitable organisations, Four Corners profiles five people across Australia who are struggling to survive. One of them is John. A few months ago he lost his job. He became ill and was forced into hospital. Now he searches for work and barely survives on the Newstart allowance. John lives on one meal a day of two minute noodles, and his only chance for a good meal is to line up at a food kitchen. Like so many people, John doesn't want sympathy, he simply wants support that allows him to survive while he looks for work - and he's not an isolated case. Those on the frontline of welfare delivery warn that, based on the figures they are seeing, the problems associated with unemployment will increase in the near future. Pastor Marty Beckett, who runs an emergency food and accommodation charity, told Four Corners the problem of poverty associated with unemployment isn't getting better: "No, it's growing. It is growing, unfortunately. I always say to people it'd be great to put ourselves out of a job. I don't see it happening soon though unfortunately. It, it's getting worse."- published: 22 Dec 2013

Festival of Dangerous Ideas 2013: Vandana Shiva - Growth = Poverty
When natural resources like timber, water and mineral deposits can be extracted from ecosystems, they become assets with dollar values that can be bought and sold internationally and enable developing countries to grow and participate in the global economy. If growth is the key to emerging from poverty, then this might seem like a good thing. But what if these same resources being sold to richer nations come from an ecosystem that people depend on for their livelihood? What if new growth is actually proportional to the creation of new poverty? The cult of 'growth' has dictated policy for decades. But if well-being, not growth, is our goal, selling resources that bring long term wellbeing to communities for short term gain is a very bad deal. Hard as it may be for the West to understand, protecting the ecological resources of communities might be more important than GDP figures. Vandana Shiva holds a PhD in physics, but is best known as an environmental, and anti-globalisation activist and as a leading figure of 'ecofeminism.' Shiva is based in India and is the author of over twenty books, including Staying Alive and Biopiracy. She is a former recipient of the Sydney Peace Prize. Chair: Simran Sethi is an award-winning Indian American journalist. She is currently undergoing a research fellowship at the University of Melbourne in Australia on the loss of agricultural biodiversity in our food system. http://sydneyoperahouse.com/ideas Subscribe and find more videos from Ideas at the House: http://www.youtube.com/ideasatthehouse Get a new talk every week on our podcast: Audio - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/sydney-opera-house-ideas-at/id640445035 Video - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/sydney-opera-house-ideas-at/id640444896 Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/IdeasAtTheHouse Twitter - https://twitter.com/ideasatthehouse- published: 11 Nov 2013
