Thus he finds a love, ostensibly persisting,
Apparitions of immaculate sublimation.
He repudiates lethargy; without desisting,
Crafts a piece deserving presentation.
A modest show, a crowd unresisting
Smiles at the motley conglomeration.
Though, too callow, all flee posthaste;
What's art worth if it does not sate?
Life so errant, tomorrow so equivocal,
Sneers and snickers coated with incessant prate;
Erudite criticism from sophist societal
Virtuosos evokes uncertainty on chosen fate.
Following completion, satisfaction ephemeral,
Persisting seems an imbecilic gait.
Tenacity wanes, desired idealism a farce,
That epigram only sparks a ludicrous lark.
Sloth is a well fitting suit,
Leave creation for the gods,
Studying stars is vain and uncouth.
We've already progressed beyond pigs or dogs.
And by now philosophers are without moot
Topics beside rotating crops.
Anyway, there are pretentious people working
To leave us content with lifetime shirking.
Raise your voices, join in the song:
To distraction, sitcoms, and beer.
Why give a fuck? Now all sing along:
All labor is pointless we cheer!
Imprudence, procrastination is not wrong,
Let's idly gripe till we disappear.
Provided I pray, some deity will save,
Skim and impose till I float from my grave.
Shout out loud, refute the clowns:
To ignorance, decadence, and scatological comedy.
Don't give a shit, let our voices resound:
Fuck effort, ruminate solely on the arbitrary!
Live for the moment, in empiricism let's drown.
Remain static, ignore criticism, illiteracy is my homily.
Officiously sneer at every disparate fool,
and never reflect. Stay draconian, dude.

Checks & Balances
"Checks & Balances" is a series of object-networks that investigate the materiality of the everyday, cause and effect, narrative tension and performance. Each network is a performance conducted by the intrinsic qualities of its actants, which exist in an active-static state, achieved by real-time sensing and response. "Checks & Balances" also explores empiricism through making, using an iterative process modeled after scientific case studies.
Shown in Art Center College of Design's Wind Tunnel Gallery for the Media Design Practices winter show.

Visiting the Cargo Vessel (#2)
Animation out of a series of nine, translating parts of a poem by Dutch poet Ed Leeflang to animations. This animation consists of hundreds of pictures.
Translation of the strophe:
We look over the railing at the city spread wide
the moon cartwheeling over the spires and towers
The curving roof of the Central Station glistens softly,
In this theatre a ship is the last balcony on the left
Lights spread their light so capriciously
Concentric rings that dance wider in the dark water and return
Heavy pain spreads itself thus in body and spirit
wherever the secret channels are.
The Amsterdam we can hear buzzing with anger
Is not far way but is familiar.
We seem to be forgotten by our fellows
This makes us vulnerable and ready for a vision,
creatures who work on heavenly made to measure goods
In this face appear slumberers, drinkers,
Cast of the same die through poetic simplicity.
As the elm trees lining the canals are of an equal age.
We know, go shopping, go away and multiply.
And a grammar, overshadowed by clouds,
fed by rage, averse to empiricism,
Waves its cobra heads, the threat of poetry is in the air.
Animation by Percy Tienhoven

Psychedelic, Psychoactive and Addictive Drugs and States of Consciousness - Ralph Metzner, Ph.D.
In this talk, Dr. Metzner examines the states of consciousness induced by psychedelic drugs in the framework of a heuristic model of altered states of consciousness (ASCs). He uses William James’s philosophy of radical empiricism to provide the appropriate epistemological underpinning for the empirical study of states of consciousness, as well as their correlations with brain functions. ASCs, whether induced or naturally occurring, differ energetically on the dimensions of (1) arousal vs. sedation, (2) pleasure vs. pain, (3) expansion vs. contraction.
The psychoactive, or mood regulating drugs, such as the stimulants and sedatives, affect primarily the dimensions of arousal and pleasure-pain. It will be argued that the classical psychedelic drugs are consciousness expanding, and therefore opposite in effect to drugs such as the opiates, alcohol, cocaine and amphetamines, that produce contracted and potentially addictive states of consciousness. This is the basis for the therapeutic applications of consciousness-expanding psychedelics in the treatment of addictions and behavioral compulsions. In general, expansive states of consciousness, whether induced by drugs or by meditative, shamanic and yogic methods, play a significant role in the world’s spiritual growth traditions and in indigenous vision practices.
This video is from Psychedelic Science in the 21st Century, a conference taking in place in San Jose, California on April 15-18, 2010. The conference was organized by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) in collaboration with the Heffter Research Institute, the Council on Spiritual Practices, and the Beckley Foundation.
