Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd Blows Pastor's Mind With Powerful Defense of Gay Marriage
During a recent Q&A; on ABC News, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was asked by Pastor Matt Prater how he could call himself a Christian and still support gay marriage. "Well mate, if I was going to have that view, the Bible also says that slavery is a natural condition," Rudd responded to a round of applause from the audience. He went on to tell the visibly stunned pastor that changing his mind on the subject, which he did back in May, did not come easy, but was based on an "informed conscience and Christian conscience." Sadly for Mr. Rudd and Australia as a whole, the most recent polls predict his opponent, Tony Abbott, will claim victory in the September 7th election. Abbott last month reiterated his opposition to gay marriage and called it "the fashion of the moment."- published: 05 Sep 2013

Kevin Rudd launches passionate defence of gay marriage
Australia's prime minister, Kevin Rudd, a devout Christian, has stared down a pastor on live television and cited scripture while delivering a stirring defence of gay marriage. In footage that has since gone viral on the internet, Mr Rudd declared that "people don't choose their sexuality" and said if The Bible were taken literally, slavery would still be legal. His impassioned defence of his decision to throw his support behind same sex marriage came in response to a Christian pastor who asked on a chat show featuring audience questions: "Kevin, if you call yourself a Christian, why don't you believe the words of Jesus in The Bible?" Mr Rudd, facing defeat in Australia's election on Saturday, responded: "Well mate if I was going to have that view, The Bible also says that slavery is a natural condition. Because St Paul said in the New Testament: slaves be obedient to your masters. And therefore we should have all fought for the confederacy in the US Civil War. I mean for goodness sake. The human condition and social conditions change." Mr Rudd said be believed his decision to support gay marriage was in line with The Bible's emphasis on "universal love". "I concluded in my conscience, through an informed conscience and a Christian conscience, it was the right thing to do," he told ABC TV's Q&A; show. "What is the fundamental principle of the New Testament? It is one of universal love. Loving your fellow man. And if we get obsessed with a particular definition of that through a form of sexuality, then I think we are missing the centrality of what the gospel, whether you call it a social gospel, a personal gospel or a spiritual gospel, is all about If you think homosexuality is an unnatural condition, then frankly I cannot agree with you based on any element of the science." Polls have shown a majority of Australians support same sex marriage and several state governments are planning to legalise it. But a federal bill failed to pass last year after it was opposed by Mr Rudd, as well as Tony Abbott, the opposition leader, and then prime minister Julia Gillard. The ruling Labor party allowed a conscience vote and would continue to do so if Mr Rudd wins. Mr Abbott, a staunch Catholic, has signalled he may consider allowing Liberal party MPs a conscience vote. He continues to oppose gay marriage but his daughters have openly opposed him, as has his sister, who recently revealed she is a lesbian. Mr Rudd said he spent months grappling with the issue but ultimately decided that homosexuality is not "unnatural" and that same sex couples deserve recognition of their relationships. "I do not believe people when they are born choose their sexuality," he said. "They are gay if they are born gay. You don't decide at some later stage in life to be one thing or the other. It is how people are built. Therefore, the idea that this is somehow an abnormal condition is wrong. I don't get that. I think it is a completely ill-founded view." Young Boy Questions Former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard About Gay Marriage
Young Boy Questions Former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard About Gay Marriage
Former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, the country's first woman to hold that office, sought to break her public silence since her defeat by Kevin Rudd earlier this year through a series of public forums. At one of these events recently held at the Sydney Opera House, a young boy took to the mic and Gillard certainly was not expecting his question. The boy, who got a boost from his older brother to reach the mic, put the former prime minister on the spot by asking, "How come you didn't let gay people get married?" His question received resounding applause and catcalling from the audience. In response, Gillard cited the foundation of her political ideology to be rooted within a feminist critique of marriage as an institution: I'm a lot older than you and when I went to university and started forming my political views of the world, we weren't talking about gay marriage, indeed, as women, as feminists. We were critiquing marriage. And if someone had said to me as a 20-year-old, 'What about you get into a white dress to symbolize virginity and you get your father to walk you down and aisle and give you away to a man who is waiting at the end of the aisle,' I would have looked with puzzlement like, 'What on earth would I do that for?' While in office, Gillard remained rigid regarding her opposition to gay marriage, reportedly telling one pro-gay marriage supporter in April, "I doubt we're going to end up agreeing, I'm sorry." Check out the video above to to see the heartwarming question from this young gay rights activist in the making and to hear Gillard's full response.- published: 03 Oct 2013

Australia Election: Tony Abbott Wins | Australia Has A New Prime Minister
Australia Election: Tony Abbott Wins | Australia Has A New Prime Minister
Tony Abbott promises to provide a "trustworthy and competent" government after winning Australia's general election. Tony Abbott has declared victory in Australia's general election after defeating prime minister Kevin Rudd. Mr Abbott, the British-born leader of the Liberal Party-led coalition opposition has ended six years of Labor rule. In his victory speech Mr Abbott said: "I can inform you that the government of Australia has changed. For just the seventh time in 60 years the government of Australia has changed. "I declare that Australia is under new management and is once again open for business. "I now look forward to forming a government that is competent, that is trustworthy, and which purposely and steadfastly and methodically set about delivering on our commitments." Earlier, in Brisbane, Mr Rudd conceded defeat. "A short time again I telephoned Tony Abbott to concede defeat at this national election," he said. "As prime minister of Australia, I wish him well in the high office of prime minister of this country." With 80% of the votes counted, the Australian Electoral Commission showed Mr Abbott's party was leading in 88 seats in the House of Representatives, to Labor's 56. Mr Rudd said Labor had "fought the good fight". He added: "Tonight is the time to unite as the great Australian nation. "Because whatever our politics may be we are all first and foremost Australian and the things that unite us are more powerful than the things that divide us, which is why the world marvels at Australia." He added: "I will not be recontesting the leadership of the parliamentary Labor Party. The Australian people I believe deserve a fresh start with our leadership." Defence minister Stephen Smith told the ABC broadcaster: "Pessimistically, I'm looking at a result which will be a 1996-type result, a heavy defeat for the government," he added, referring to the election which brought Liberal leader John Howard to power. Labor has been marred by relentless infighting - which saw Mr Rudd oust Australia's first female prime minister Julia Gillard in June - leaving the public frustrated and disillusioned. Health Minister Tanya Plibersek said: "The clear take-out from this definitely is that disunity is death and we are not disciplined enough. I don't think the division or the pain was justified at any stage." Former Labor prime minister Bob Hawke said personality politics had been allowed to overtake the party's message and policies. "The personal manipulations and pursuits of interest have dominated more than they should and in the process the concentration on values has slipped. "I really believe this was an election that was lost by the government rather than one that was won by the opposition." Early poll numbers suggested big swings against the government in the key states of New South Wales and Queensland after more than 14.7 million electors took part in the mandatory ballot across the country. During the five-week campaign, Mr Abbott gradually overtook once-popular Mr Rudd. The growing number of asylum seekers has been a major theme in the election. Labor promised that every bona fide refugee who attempts to reach Australia by boat would be settled on Papua New Guinea or Nauru. The Liberals promised new policies requiring the navy to turn asylum seeker boats back to Indonesia, where they launch, and the government to buy back ageing fishing boats from Indonesian villagers to prevent them falling into the hands of people smugglers. Mr Abbott has also vowed to scrap a controversial carbon tax and instead introduce taxpayer-funded incentives for polluters to operate cleaner. Mr Abbott was born in London and moved with his parents to Sydney at the age of two. Later, he returned to England to study at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Mr Abbott has been in Parliament for almost two decades, and for a time was health minister. He trained briefly as a priest, is a fitness fanatic famous for wearing tight swimming trunks and also volunteers for Australia's Rural Fire Service. Deeply religious, some of his more conservative views on issues such as abortion and gay marriage have not pleased some. Questions have also been asked about his attitude towards women with Ms Gillard famously labelling him a misogynist in a heart-felt speech in Parliament. http://news.sky.com/story/1138436/abbott-wins-australia-under-new-management **************************************** Abbott Wins: Australia 'Under New Management' Abbott Delivers Victory Speech Kevin Rudd Concedes Election Defeat- published: 07 Sep 2013
