The Sucker

The Sucker (French: Le Corniaud, French pronunciation: [lə kɔʁˈnjo]) is a French, Italian and Spanish comedy film by Gérard Oury starring Louis de Funès and Bourvil. It was released in 1965. As of 2013, it is still one of the 20 highest-grossing films in France along with La Grande Vadrouille, another Oury-de Funès-Bourvil collaboration.

The film was entered into the 4th Moscow International Film Festival where the actor Bourvil won a Special Diploma.

Plot

While leaving his flat in Paris for vacation, Antoine Maréchal has a car accident. His 2CV is totally wrecked by Léopold Saroyan's Bentley, the director of an import-export company. As a compensation for the accident, Saroyan offers Maréchal to drive his best friend's 1964 Cadillac DeVille from Naples to Bordeaux, all expenses paid. Unknown to Maréchal, Saroyan is the leader of a criminal organization and the Cadillac is filled with drugs, stolen gold and diamonds, including the largest diamond in the World, the Youkounkoun. Maréchal departs for his destination, oblivious of both his cargo and Saroyan who is discreetly following him to watch over the delivery.

Louis de Funès

Louis de Funès (French pronunciation: [lwi də fy.nɛs]hear; 31 July 1914 – 27 January 1983), born Louis Germain David de Funès de Galarza, was a popular French actor of Spanish origin and one of the giants of French comedy alongside André Bourvil and Fernandel. His acting style is remembered for its high energy performance, wide range of facial expressions and engaging, snappy impatience and selfishness. A big part of his most famous work was in collaboration with director Jean Girault, and together, they wrote and directed the French classic L'avare (1980) in which he also starred.

He was a household name in several countries of Europe (Greece, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Bulgaria, Germany, Spain, Turkey, Albania, Romania, USSR and Yugoslavia in particular) for many years, yet remained almost unknown in the English-speaking world. He was seen only once in the United States in 1974 with the release of The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob, which was nominated for a Golden Globe. According to a 1968 poll he was France's favourite actor. Funès played over 130 roles in film and over 100 roles on stage.

Roger Vadim

Roger Vadim (26 January 1928 – 11 February 2000) was a French screenwriter, film director/and producer, as well as an author and occasional actor.

Early life

Vadim was born as Roger Vladimir Plemiannikov in Paris. His father, Igor Nikolaevich Plemiannikov (И́горь Никола́евич Племя́нников), a White Russian military officer and pianist, had emigrated from Ukraine and became a naturalized French citizen, and was a vice consul of France to Egypt, stationed in Alexandria. His mother, Marie-Antoinette (née Ardilouze), was a French actress. Although Vadim lived in luxury in his early youth, the death of his father, when Vadim was nine years old, caused the family to return to France, where his mother found work running a hostel in the French Alps, which was functioning as a way-station for Jews and other fugitives fleeing Nazism.

Vadim studied journalism and writing at the University of Paris, without graduating. At age 19, he became assistant to film director Marc Allégret, whom he met while working at the Theatre Sarah Bernhardt, and for whom he worked on several screenplays.

Pierre Jaquet-Droz

Pierre Jaquet-Droz (French: [ʒakɛ dʁo]; 1721–1790) was a Swiss-born watchmaker of the late eighteenth century. He lived in Paris, London, and Geneva, where he designed and built animated dolls, or automata, to help his firm sell watches and mechanical birds.

Constructed between 1768 and 1774 by Pierre Jaquet-Droz, his son Henri-Louis (1752-1791), and Jean-Frédéric Leschot (1746-1824) were The Writer (made of 6000 pieces), The Musician (2500 pieces), and The Draughtsman (2000 pieces).

His astonishing mechanisms fascinated the kings and emperors of Europe, China, India, and Japan.

Some consider these devices to be the oldest examples of the computer. The Writer, a mechanical boy who writes with a quill pen upon paper with real ink, has an input device to set tabs, defining individual letters written by the boy, that form a programmable memory. 40 cams that represent the read-only programme. The work of Pierre Jaquet-Droz predates that of Charles Babbage by decades.

The automata of Jaquet-Droz are also considered to be some of the finest examples of human mechanical problem solving. Three particularly complex and still functional dolls, now known as the Jaquet-Droz automata, are housed at the art and history museum in Neuchâtel, Switzerland.

Ein Schuss löst sich, der den vermeintlichen Jo tödlich trifft. Brisebard verscharrt die Leiche in seinem Garten, wo ein neuer Pavillon gebaut werden soll. Dann aber eröffnet ihm Inspektor Ducros, dass Jo tot aufgefunden worden sei. Dem Drehbuchautor wird klar, dass er einen Fremden umgebracht hat. Nachdem Brisebard zunächst verschiedene verschollene Bekannte als Mordopfer vermutet hat, stellt sich schließlich heraus, dass es sich bei dem Toten um den Gauner Riri handelt, der wiederum Jo ermordet hat. Nachdem der Pavillon bei einem nächtlichen Gewittersturm vom Blitz getroffen und zerstört worden ist, versucht Antoine Brisebard zunächst allein, später mit Hilfe seiner Frau, ein neues Versteck für die Leiche zu finden, während nicht nur Inspektor Ducros sein Haus durchsucht, sondern auch noch potenzielle Käufer des Hauses, Handwerker und ein Vertreter für Feuerlöscher zusätzliches Chaos verursachen. Die Leiche wird zunächst in einer Statue, dann in einer Standuhr und schließlich in einem Koffer versteckt. Gerade als die Brisebards es geschafft haben, den Koffer von ihrem Grundstück zu entfernen, eröffnet ihnen der Inspektor, dass in der Nähe zwei weitere Gangster – die zuvor bei Brisebard gewesen waren, um einen Koffer mit Geld zu holen, den Riri bei sich hatte – einen Autounfall hatten. Diese hält er nun für die Mörder, wodurch Brisebard plötzlich genug Zeit hat, um die Leiche endgültig verschwinden zu lassen. Dabei wird er jedoch von Ducros gesehen.

Même d'une scène très courte comme celle-ci, l'on peut voir l'immense talent de ce grand acteur. Le Corniaud est un film franco-italiano-espagnol réalisé par Gérard Oury, sorti le 24 mars 1965. D'abord de mauvaise foi, Saroyan reconnaît ses torts et, comme dédommagement, offre à Maréchal le vol Paris-Naples en Caravelle, puis de convoyer tous frais payés, jusqu'à Bordeaux, d'où elle sera réexpédiée à Miami, une superbe et immense Cadillac décapotable appartenant à un de ses amis américains, et arrivée à Naples par bateau en provenance de Beyrouth. Voilà qui promet de formidables vacances pour Maréchal. Cependant celui-ci ne se doute pas alors que Saroyan est le parrain d'un syndicat de gangsters et qui l'utilise comme « mule » pour convoyer ce « paquebot routier » bourré en fait de produits de contrebande : drogue (héroïne), pierres précieuses (dont le « Youkounkoun », le plus gros diamant du monde), or, etc... Voici donc le pauvre Maréchal bientôt sur les routes d'Italie, ignorant tout de sa précieuse cargaison (car comme le dit Saroyan : « À la douane messieurs, c'est l'homme qui est suspect ce n'est pas la voiture ! ») et ne remarquant pas que le malfaiteur le suit à distance pour veiller sur la marchandise, qui elle aussi est convoitée par une bande rivale ... Le Corniaud est un road movie comique, un voyage en Italie qui conduit les protagonistes de Paris à Rome, Naples, Pise, la Côte d'Azur, la Cité de Carcassonne et Bordeaux, en passant par des sites magnifiques comme la Villa d'Este, le château Saint-Ange et la Toscane. Loin des comédies « réalisées à l'économie », le film entièrement tourné en extérieur bénéficie de conditions assez exceptionnelles pour un film comique français de cette époque : un budget important1, ainsi que la couleur, le son direct et quinze semaines de tournage. Même si les deux acteurs principaux ont peu de scènes communes2, leurs emplois sont complémentaires : Bourvil joue le corniaud, le naïf émouvant qui effectue innocemment un extraordinaire périple et joue le joli cœur, tandis que De Funès incarne la mauvaise foi « montée sur ressort » cherchant à exploiter son acolyte, un chef de bande colérique et fébrile qui voit tous ses plans malhonnêtes s'effondrer au fur et à mesure du chemin. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Corniaud
