The spotted eagle ray (Aetobatus narinari) is a cartilaginous fish of the eagle ray family, Myliobatidae. It can be found globally in tropical regions, including the Gulf of Mexico, Hawaii, off the coast of West Africa, the Indian Ocean, Oceania, and on both coasts of the Americas at depths down to about 80 meters (262 ft). The rays are most commonly seen alone, but occasionally swim in groups. Rays are ovoviviparous, the female retaining the eggs then releasing the young as miniature versions of the parent.
This ray can be identified by its dark dorsal surface covered in white spots or rings. Near the base of the ray's relatively long tail, just behind the pelvic fins, are several venomous, barbed stingers. Spotted eagle rays commonly feed on small fish and crustaceans, and will sometimes dig with their snouts to look for food buried in the sand of the sea bed. These rays are commonly observed leaping out of the water, and on at least two occasions have been reported as having jumped into boats, in one incident resulting in the death of a woman in the Florida Keys. The spotted eagle ray is hunted by a wide variety of sharks. The rays are considered near threatened on the IUCN Red List. They are fished mainly in Southeast Asia and Africa, the most common market being in commercial trade and aquariums. They are protected in the Great Barrier Reef.
Clanga is a genus which contains the spotted eagles.
Eagle is a common name for many large birds of prey of the family Accipitridae; it belongs to several groups of genera that are not necessarily closely related to each other.
Most of the 60 species of eagles are from Eurasia and Africa. Outside this area, just 14 species can be found – two in North America, nine in Central and South America, and three in Australia.
Eagles are large, powerfully built birds of prey, with a heavy head and beak. Even the smallest eagles, like the booted eagle (Aquila pennata) (which is comparable in size to a common buzzard (Buteo buteo) or red-tailed hawk (B. jamaicensis)), have relatively longer and more evenly broad wings, and more direct, faster flight – despite the reduced size of aerodynamic feathers. Most eagles are larger than any other raptors apart from some vultures. The smallest species of eagle is the South Nicobar serpent eagle (Spilornis klossi), at 450 g (0.99 lb) and 40 cm (16 in). The largest species are discussed below. Like all birds of prey, eagles have very large hooked beaks for tearing flesh from their prey, strong muscular legs, and powerful talons. The beak is typically heavier than that of most other birds of prey. Eagles' eyes are extremely powerful, having up to 3.6 times human acuity for the martial eagle, which enables them to spot potential prey from a very long distance. This keen eyesight is primarily attributed to their extremely large pupils which ensure minimal diffraction (scattering) of the incoming light. The female of all known species of eagles is larger than the male.

This video probably shouldn't have happened.. Spotted Eagle Rays ALWAYS fly off immediately before you can get anywhere near them.. Here's the situation: My mom passed away December 2014.. We were in Belize June 8, 2015, which was my mom's first birthday since her passing.. I was almost out of air, the group had started up to the boat when the dive master signaled the two rays way out in front of me.. I just instinctively took off after them, expecting them to jet immediately.. As I caught up to them, one did, but one didn't.. The group was gone, I was alone in the ocean with this Spotted Eagle Ray, a couple of inches off her tail.. The camera even shut off twice, so I had to re-fire it back up and edit the videos together.. At the every end of the video, you can hear my dive computer g...

On Bonaire, spotted eagle rays are often found in sandy areas on dive sites like Tori's reef, Invisibles, Captain Don's reef and Joanna's sunchi, feeding on mollusks and crustaceans. Eagle rays can reach about 2.5 m / 8 ft in span width and including the very long tail they reach up 5 m / 16 ft in lenght.
Check out the beautiful markings of this spotted eagle ray. Even though we don't have evidence that they are attracted to the bait, we still see swim-by's on the BRUVs. This male was seen on a snorkel in between setting BRUVs in Belize.
Second Spotted Eagle Ray in two days but this one was up close and personal. This is a very large ray and it is unusual to get this close....

Spotted Eagle Ray working in the sand....Belize, July 2014
Underwater the Eagle ray resembles a gliding bird of prey, no wonder why it got its name. The motion of its rhomboid fins looks like the beating of wings and its nose like a bird's beak. During a dive an eagle ray can be found swiftly and gracefully "flying" past in the blue, or if lucky, during its meal, because unlike planktivorous mantas, eagle rays feed on shellfish, mollusks and crustaceans. Videographer of Camel Dive Club in Sharm el Sheikh (Egypt) Carlotta Rio joined an eagle ray during its open water flight, and her new video will help you to see it up close.

Behavioural training session with spotted eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari) in Ripley’s stingray exhibit “Ray Bay”. Aquarist Maude Jette will be in the tank with the rays using operant conditioning with positive reinforcement to train them to recognize and respond to a simple target. Food rewards are used as positive reinforcement. During the course of their training the rays have learned to associate approaching the target with being fed. They will now readily approach and feed from Maude’s hands at the target.
