On, off job, victims were imposing presences
By Eric Moskowitz and Laura Crimaldi | GLOBE STAFF MARCH 27, 2014

Boston Firefighter Michael R. Kennedy was a square-jawed, 33-year-old Marine Corps veteran who saw combat in Iraq and a first responder who rushed to treat victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. He spent days off roaring down the road on his motorcycle and pushing himself and others to the limits as a Crossfit trainer.

Fire Lieutenant Edward J. Walsh Jr. had tried a career in finance, but his passion was for firefighting. Nine and a half years ago, Walsh became a Boston firefighter, following in the footsteps of his late father, a lieutenant in the Watertown Fire Department.

Bush Official Makes Outrageous Comment About Obama

Three years ago, an uprising against the Assad regime turned into what looked like a straightforward civil war between Syrian government forces and rebels. However, over time, what had started as a largely secular opposition movement began to take on more of a radical Islamist tone, with two al Qaeda offshoots -- the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) and Jabhat al-Nusra -- becoming the dominant forces on the ground across the rebel-held North.

One VICE filmmaker managed to secure unprecedented access to both al-Qaeda factions battling Syria\'s government forces, despite the risk of journalists being kidnapped. This is a remarkable portrait of the foreign volunteers and local Syrians willing to fight and die to establish a new caliphate on Europe\'s doorstep.

President Barack Obama says the United States is levying a new round of economic sanctions on individuals in Russia, both inside and outside the government, in retaliation for the Kremlin\'s actions in Ukraine.

Obama says he has also signed a new executive order that would allow the U.S. to sanction key sectors of the Russian economy.

The new penalties mark the second round of economic sanctions the U.S. has levied on Russia this week. The first round of penalties had little impact in stopping Moscow from annexing the strategically important Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine.

BREAKING: Police raid home of Malaysian pilot, Zaharie Ahmad Shah. BREAKING: MH370 Was Hijacked - A Malaysian government official has told the Associated Press the government has concluded missing Boeing 777 was hijacked. BREAKING: Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 may have been deliberately diverted to Andaman Islands US Navy: Moving ship to Indian ocean for search US looking at Indian Ocean for missing Malaysian plane based on new information WASHINGTON (REUTERS) -- A new search area may be opened in the Indian Ocean as authorities try to determine what happened to missing Malaysian airliner MH370, the White House said on Thursday. "It's my understanding that based on some new information that's not necessarily conclusive -- but new information -- an additional search area may be opened in the Indian Ocean," White House spokesman Jay Carney said. "And we are consulting with international partners about the appropriate assets to deploy." Mr Carney did not specify the nature of the "new information." The United States has been helping in the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane, including the deployment of US Navy vessels. "There are a number of possible scenarios that are being investigated as to what happened to the flight. And we are not in a position at this time to make conclusions about what happened, unfortunately. But we're actively participating in the search," Mr Carney told a regular news briefing. "We're looking at information, pursuing possible leads, working within the investigation being led by the Malaysian government," he added. Meanwhile, a senior Pentagon official told ABC News that a guided missile destroyer - the USS Kidd - is being deployed to the Indian Ocean to continue rescue efforts. The official, who said there were indications that the plane flew four or five hours after dropping off from the radar, added that it would take another 24 hours before the ship reaches its destination. An official also told the AFP that "the Kidd is going to the Straits of Malacca and will be searching in the western section of the strait at the request of the Malaysian government." The international hunt initially focused on the South China Sea east of Malaysia, along the plane's intended route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. But the desperate search has expanded to include waters on both sides of peninsular Malaysia. Malaysia's Acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein had earlier refuted reports that the missing plane flew a few hours after its last reported position.

CNN released graphic footage Saturday from 13 different videos showing apparent use of chemical weapons in Syria. According to the CNN report, the Obama administration has shown these clips to the Senate Intelligence Committee, noting that the videos are from the Aug. 21 attack. A U.S. government assessment released in August said that attack is believed to have killed at least 1,429 people, including 426 children.

Egypt's Sisi Declares Candidacy: Top general confirms he will run for Egyptian presidency

Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the Egyptian general who ousted his Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, has declared his candidacy for a presidential election he is expected to win easily. Sisi toppled the Muslim Brotherhood's Mursi last July after mass protests against his rule, vowed to fight what he called the terrorist threat facing Egypt, a reference to attacks that have spiralled since last summer. Sisi had to resign his posts of army chief and minister of defence so he could contest the election. Seeking to cap some of the sky-high expectations, Sisi warned he could not perform "miracles" in a country of 85 million that is steeped in poverty and said everyone must work to rebuild Egypt. Under Sisi, the Brotherhood has been outlawed and driven underground since Mursi's ousting. The state has formally declared the movement, Egypt's best organised political party until last year, a terrorist group.

One VICE filmmaker managed to secure unprecedented access to both al-Qaeda factions battling Syria's government forces, despite the risk of journalists being kidnapped. This is a remarkable portrait of the foreign volunteers and local Syrians willing to fight and die to establish a new caliphate on Europe's doorstep. President Barack Obama announced Monday at the White House, that he plans to impose sanctions on specific individuals who have undermined the sovereignty of Ukraine, including Russian officials. "The referendum in Crimea was in clear violation of Ukrainian and international law and will not be recognized by the international community," Obama said in response to a referendum to determine if Crimea would secede from Ukraine and become part of Russia. The president warned that "continued Russian military intervention in Ukraine will only deepen Russia's diplomatic isolation and exact a greater toll on the Russian economy."

President Barack Obama says the United States is levying a new round of economic sanctions on individuals in Russia, both inside and outside the government, in retaliation for the Kremlin's actions in Ukraine.
