Gefreiter is the German, Swiss and Austrian equivalent for the military rank Private (NATO Rank Code OR-2). Gefreiter was the lowest rank to which an ordinary soldier could be promoted. As a military rank it has existed since at least the 16th century. From the 1920s on Gefreiter has expanded into several additional ranks, those being Obergefreiter, Hauptgefreiter, Stabsgefreiter and Oberstabsgefreiter (NATO Rank Code OR-3 and OR-4).
Gefreiter means "the exempted". It emerged in the 2nd half of the 16th century and denotes the older soldiers who were exempted from sentry duty.
Efreitor (Russian: Ефрейтор, transliterated: Yefreytor) is a German loanword in Russian and denotes a similar rank in the Russian army.
In today's German Federal Defence Forces (German: Bundeswehr), almost every soldier or sailor (military recruit/cadet) successfully passing the 12 week basic military training course is promoted to Gefreiter. Following the NATO ranking system, Gefreiter ranks as Private (OR-2), Obergefreiter as PFC (OR-3 lower half), Hauptgefreiter as Lance-Corporal (OR-3 upper half), Stabsgefreiter and Oberstabsgefreiter as Corporal (OR-4). The German equivalent of Private (OR-1) is Schütze (Rifleman) or another unit type-specific term (like Kanonier, "gunner") in the Heer (German Army), Matrose (sailor/seaman) in the German Navy, Flieger (aviator/airman) in the Luftwaffe (Airforce), or simply Soldat ("[ordinary] soldier").
Maximillian Adolph Otto Siegfried Schmeling (September 28, 1905 – February 2, 2005) was a German boxer who was heavyweight champion of the world between 1930 and 1932. His two fights with Joe Louis in the 1936 and 1938 were worldwide social events because of their national associations. He was born in the Pomeranian town of Klein Luckow.
Starting his professional career in 1924, Schmeling came to the United States in 1928 and, after a ninth-round technical knockout of Johnny Risko, became a sensation. He became the first to win the heavyweight championship (at that time vacant) by disqualification in 1930, after opponent Jack Sharkey knocked him down with a low blow in the fourth round. A rematch in 1932 saw Sharkey gaining the title from Schmeling by a controversial fifteen-round split decision. In 1933, Schmeling lost to Max Baer by a tenth-round TKO. The loss left people believing that Schmeling was past his prime. Meanwhile, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party took over control in Germany, and Schmeling came to be viewed as a 'Nazi puppet.'

Plot: In 1943, in the Russian front, the decorated leader Rolf Steiner is promoted to Sergeant after another successful mission. Meanwhile the upper-class and arrogant Prussian Captain Hauptmann Stransky is assigned as the new commander of his squad. After a bloody battle of Steiner's squad against the Russian troops led by the brave Lieutenant Meyer that dies in the combat, the coward Stransky claims that he led his squad against the Russian and requests to be awarded with the Iron of Cross to satisfy his personal ambition together with his aristocratic family. Stransky gives the names of Steiner and of the homosexual Lieutenant Triebig as witnesses of his accomplishment, but Steiner, who has problems with the chain of command in the army and with the arrogance of Stransky, refuses to participate in the fraud. When Colonel Brandt gives the order to leave the position in the front, Stransky does not retransmit the order to Steiner's squad, and they are left alone surrounded by the enemy and having to fight to survive.

Genres: Drama,Harre, meine Seele, harre des Herrn!
Alles ihm befehle, hilft er doch so gern!
Sei unverzagt: bald der Morgen tagt,
und ein neuer Frühling folgt dem Winter nach.
In allen Stürmen, in aller Not
wird er dich beschirmen, der treue Gott.
2. Harre, meine Seele, harre des Herrn!
Alles ihm befehle, hilft er doch so gern!
Wenn alles bricht, Gott verläßt uns nicht;
größer als der helfer ist die Not ja nicht.
Ewige Treue, Retter in Not,
rettet auch die Seele, der treue Gott.
3. Harre, meine Seele, harre des Herrn!
Alles ihm befehle, hilft er doch so gern!
Bald höret auf unser Pilgerlauf,
und die Klagen schweigen; Jesus nimmt uns auf.
