The Roman Empire - Episode 6: The Fall Of The Roman Empire (History Documentary) Two thousand years ago, one civilisation held the entire Western world in its grasp. From Northern Europe to Africa, it imposed laws, ideas and a single language. Rome was the super power and a colossal empire. Travel back in time and experience the exporting of the Roman world through the glory years of conquest to the longest period of stability the world has ever known. EPISODE 6: THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE Rome's glory had shone for a thousand years. The Roman Empire had united all lands from Spain to Syrhia, created more prosperity, more stability and more peace than the Western world had ever seen - nothing lasts forever. In the 3rd Century AD, civil war engulfed the empire. Chaos and corruption undermined it from within and from every direction Rome's enemies gathered for the kill. By the end of the 4th century, the Roman Empire was nothing more than a fragile military machine that was no match for the invading barbarians. The inevitable occurred in 410 AD when Rome, the historic heart of the Empire, was sacked. As the Vandals stormed the city they were shocked at what they found. Gone were the crowds of the Golden Age. An eerie silence greeted the warriors as they wandered the same streets that their ancestors had walked down in chains 150 years earlier. The inhabitants of Rome, with their empire crumbling, had been chased away, the glory that had been Rome's was of another day.- published: 23 Feb 2014

The Roman Empire. Or Republic. Or...Which Was It?: Crash Course World History #10
The Mongols Shirt is available for pre-order now! http://dft.ba/mongols In which John Green explores exactly when Rome went from being the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. Here's a hint: it had something to do with Julius Caesar, but maybe less than you think. Find out how Caesar came to rule the empire, what led to him getting stabbed 23 times on the floor of the senate, and what happened in the scramble for power after his assassination. John covers Rome's transition from city-state to dominant force in the Mediterranean in less than 12 minutes. Well, Rome's expansion took hundreds of years, he just explains it in under 12 minutes. The senate, the people, Rome, the caesarian section, the Julian calendar and our old friend Pompey all make appearances, but NOT the Caesar Salad, as Julius had nothing to do with it. EPISODE 1: RISE OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE Two thousand years ago, one civilisation held the entire Western world in its grasp. From Northern Europe to Africa and the Middle East. It imposed laws, ideas and a single language. Rome was the super power of the ancient world. Indeed later super powers never stopped learning the lessons of her spectacular rise and fall. Rome truly was a colossal empire. During the rise of the Roman Empire, it was not always easy to separate virtue from vice, or hero from villain. Indeed, all too often, they were one and the same. Rome was still an adolescent discovering who it wanted to be, and its dream of greatness was a prlude to a nightmare. It was not for another 100 years that the state would mature and commit to one enduring view of itself. It would be the army, more than any other force that was destined to shape Rome's lasting identity.- published: 23 Feb 2014

What if the Roman Empire Never Fell? (Part 1)
What if the Roman Empire never collapsed and stayed a massive power in not just the ancient world, but today's world? How would this affect global events and the history of human civilization? ‘YEKPARE’ (monolithic)
"Yekpare" is a storyteller which narrates the 8500 year story of Istanbul. The story embraces symbols from Pagans to Roman Empire, from Byzantine Empire to Latin Empire, and finally from Ottoman Empire to Istanbul at the present day.
Haydarpaşa Train Station, with its brilliant architectural forms, is the building on which the story is projected. The connection between middle east to west has been provided by Istanbul and Haydarpaşa since 1906. In the 50’s it served as a door for millions of internal emigrants who have triggered the chaos in Istanbul's dialectical daily life scenes. The project's conceptual, political and geographical positioning, the location’s depth of field and the fact that the entire show can be watched from Kadıköy coast; make "Yekpare" a dramatic presentation.
The first day of the performance also marks the 47th deathday of Nazım Hikmet Ran, the famous Turkish poet. We started out with a quote from his epic novel, "Human Landscapes from My Country": “At Haydarpaşa Train Station, in the spring of 1941, it is three o’clock. Sun, exhaustion and rush lay on the stairs...”

Civilization: The Rise of Europe
---------------------------
About the Project
---------------------------
This first installment in this multi-part series is the beginning of a long-term project in which I want to capture the rise of modern civilization, from ancient societies to the bustling and modern cities of today.
Travelling to Europe made me realize how much the past is still present in our everyday lives. Our cultural institutions are the product of those who lived before us and of the societies they built. The remnants of the past are still a significant part of the modern era.
In Civilization: The Rise of Europe, I travelled to 14 cities in 4 countries filled with history who had major influences in shaping the world in which we live in: England, France, Italy and Spain.
In these locations you can see the remains of the vast Roman Empire, the intertwined Muslim, Christian and Jewish cultures, the birthplace of the Age of Enlightenment, the European emblem of parliamentary democracy as well as many UNESCO World Heritage sites.
It is also those same countries that would eventually embark on a journey to the New World and build the foundations of America.
Civilization will make you travel in the past, but also in the present, to show you the enormous steps mankind has made throughout history. Hopefully it will give you awareness of our incredible cultural heritage.

An Easter Weekend in Rome
In April I spent the Easter weekend in Rome. It is a very impressive city, and the smell of the ancient roman empire is everywhere! The Vatican demonstrates its amazing power and wealth in a way which left me back with mixed feelings, given the current ignorance to rising problems within the catholic church.
On the other hand, seeing the people at St. Peters square, the priests and the nuns from around the world who have gathered to celebrate Easter somehow reconciled me - these people showed spirit and warmth.
Hence, my choice of music somewhat reflects these feelings.
Music from Hans Zimmer, "Roll Tide Hymn"
Shot with Lumix GH1, kitlens, 1080p24, smooth film mode (all on -2) and DIY slider. This is pre- hack footage.
Have fun!

Travel back in time and experience the exporting of the Roman world through the glory years of conquest to the longest period of stability the world has ever known. EPISODE 3: SEDUCTION OF POWER Rome seemed to own the world. Her empire stretched from Scotland to the Sahara. Her army controlled three continents. Fifty million people lived under her laws. Rome's Empire was the greatest political prize the world had ever seen. "Seduction of Power" is the story of those who would do anything to win it. The same political system that had created the magnificent monuments of the Roman Empire, the Pantheon, the Coliseum, the Forum and provided "bread and circuses" for all, would prove a breeding ground fo self-interest, assassination and civil wars. The same highly-disciplined Legions that had conquered an area of more than two million square miles would desolve into warring factions, be turned against Rome's own citizenry and in the end, prove unable to maintain the expanse of its conquests.- published: 23 Feb 2014
