Former Ukrainian leader Viktor Yanukovych, who is accused of mass crimes against the protesters who stood up for months against his rule, did not give orders to shoot the demonstrators, Putin claimed. Yanukovych sent a letter to Putin asking him to use the Russian military to restore law and order in his country, Reuters reported. Putin did not acknowledging any sort of agreement to do so, but said Russia will shelter Yanukovych to save his life. On Monday, the Ukrainian government said Russia had deployed 16,000 troops to Crimea and demanded that local forces lay down their arms. Russian fighter jets twice violated Ukraine's air space over the Black Sea, and the Black Sea Fleet told Ukrainian forces in Crimea to surrender by 5 a.m. on Tuesday or face a military action. President Barack Obama described the Russian advance as a violation of international law, and called on Congress to approve an aid package for the new Ukrainian government. The United States also suspended military ties to Russia and prepared to impose sanctions on high-level Russian officials involved in the military occupation of Crimea, The New York Times reported. Russia dismissed talks of sanctions and said it was only trying to protect its interests and those of Russians in Ukraine. Putin also noted that sanction attempts would backfire on the West. And yet, early Tuesday, Putin had ordered tens of thousands of Russian troops participating in military exercises near Ukraine's border to return to their bases. Secretary of State John Kerry is currently en route to the Ukrainian capital, in an effort to reinforce Washington's support for the new government. Tensions remained high in the strategic Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea with troops loyal to Moscow firing warning shots to ward off protesting Ukrainian soldiers. In his first comments since Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych fled Kiev, Putin said he considers him to still be Ukraine's leader, and hopes that Russia won't need to use force in predominantly Russian-speaking eastern Ukraine. He rejected the Western threat to punish Russia with sanctions over its action in Ukraine, saying they will backfire against the West. Earlier Tuesday, the Kremlin said Putin had ordered tens of thousands of Russian troops participating in military exercises near Ukraine's border to return to their bases. The massive military exercise in western Russia involving 150,000 troops, hundreds of tanks and dozens of aircraft was supposed to wrap up anyway, so it was not clear if Putin's move was an attempt to heed the West's call to de-escalate the crisis that has put Ukraine's future on the line. It came as Kerry was on his way to Kiev to meet with the new Ukrainian leadership that deposed a pro-Russian president, and has accused Moscow of a military invasion in Crimea. The Kremlin, which does not recognize the new Ukrainian leadership, insists it made the move in order to protect Russian installations and its citizens living there. On Tuesday, Russian troops who had taken control of the Belbek air base in the Crimea region fired warning shots into the air as around 300 Ukrainian soldiers, who previously manned the airfield, demanded their jobs back. About a dozen Russian soldiers at the base warned the Ukrainians, who were marching unarmed, not to approach. They fired several warning shots into the air and said they would shoot the Ukrainians if they continued to march toward them. The shots reflected tensions running high in the Black Sea peninsula since Russian troops — estimated by Ukrainian authorities to be 16,000 strong —tightened their grip over the weekend on the Crimean peninsula, where Moscow's Black Sea Fleet is based.

With all camera lenses pointed at the Sochi Olympics and Russia these days, much attention has been called to the many things at which the country excels -- or at least does better at than Americans. Besides Russia's political activities and the fact that the winter Olympic games are taking place there, how much do you really know about thie country? Here are 10 things Russia excels at and does better than how we do it in America: Number 10. Ballet. The country may not have created the art form, but it's certainly become synonymous with it. Among the most well-known and loved ballets written and choreographed in Russia include The Nutcracker and Swan Lake. The US has certainly produced some amazing talent, but has not claimed nearly as notable a chunk of history. Number 9. Vodka. This one had to be on the list. Na zdravie, you just drank all of that. Both consume a lot of vodka, but as far as manufacture, the US hasn't really brought anything new to the game, including adding flavor to it. That was popular among Russian Aristocracy before the US was even a country. Number 8. Palaces. True, this is a no-contest category as the US has never been big on building royal homes, but given that Russia has so many glorious examples, it deserves a mention. The Winter Palace in St. Petersburg is among the grandest, but considering it been in one stage of construction or another for a good part of 300 years, it should be. Number 7. Metro Stations. A quick look at a New York City subway station and one of Moscow's says it all. Number 6. Cathedrals. The Medieval surge in cathedral design and building also falls outside of America's timeline, but certainly not Russia's. The country is home to many, including St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, one of the world's most recognizable and iconic structures. Number 5. Literature. Which country writes the best books is debatable, but when it comes to the longest, Russia wins. In paperback form, Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace beats out Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged by a hundred pages and David Foster Wallace's Infinite jest by 200. Number 4. Circuses. The entertainment venues certainly have a history of popularity in the US, but, outside of Las Vegas, never took roots. Russia, however, in the 1990s had around 70 permanent shows, which they regarded to be on par with ballet and theatre. Number 3. Dogs. Dogs in Russia may not be cuter or better companions, but they are a lot more self-sufficient. While dogs in the US are at pet salons getting manicures, their Russian counterparts are, by themselves, commuting by train from the suburbs to downtown Moscow to forage for food. Number 2. Russian Baths. In America, steam baths are more of a spa day sort of thing and best shared with as few strangers as possible. Russians, however, continue to embrace them as both a social and cultural tradition. And Number 1. Dashcams. No country can match Russia when it comes to dashcams. Unless you've been living under a rock for the last 10 years, you have surely seen a 'meanwhile in russia' youtube video. Earlier in the day, two Russian warships on their way to Crimea passed through Istanbul's Bosphorus straits. The Saratov and Yamal warships, which are usually based in the Mediterranean, were seen sailing unaccompanied through the Marmara Sea before entering the straits at around 7.30am local time. At the same time as the Russian warships headed towards the Crimea, a Ukrainian ship called 'Hetman Sahaidachny entered the straits at Canakkale in Turkey. The head of Ukraine's security service also this morning suggested the country has come under a number of cyber attacks from illegal telecommunications equipment installed in Crimea since Russian troops moved into the region. Valentyn Nalivaichenko said the mobile phones of lawmakers had been hit by the cyber attacks. The Kremlin, which does not recognise the new Ukrainian leadership, insists it made the move to protect millions of Russians living in the region, with Moscow's UN envoy adding that ousted president Viktor Yanukovych had asked the country to send troops across the border. Ukraine has effectively lost control of the Crimean peninsula and admits it has 'no military options' to make Moscow withdraw. Although the Russian president has kept his silence on the crisis, his foreign minister said Russian troops were protecting people from 'ultra-nationalist threats' and would be staying put.

There's a surprising amount of humor and a lot of give and take. He's always treated me with the utmost respect. I think he recognizes the importance to Russia of working with the United States on areas of mutual concern. He does have a public style where he likes to sit back and look a little bored during the course of joint interviews. I think that's where some of these perceptions come up," he said. "My sense is that's part of his shtick back home politically as wanting to look like the tough guy. U.S. politicians have a different style. We tend to smile once in a while. The truth is, with any interaction between U.S. and Russian presidents, what's going to be primary are the issues at stake. And where we have common interests, we are going to work together." To sleep in this snow was not unpleasant. First of all, it was soft and pleasant. The snow was not so cold. Its temperature does not drop but a few degrees below zero so that it is not so bad. The problem was with supply. Yes, the Russian planes threw us supplies every once in a while, as well as food, weapons and medications, some clothes, shoes. They didn't always know where we are. We received some but only some. Some were found by the Slovakian farmers or worse. We saw that it simply fell inside German positions. They didn't know where we were. There are numerous factors, such as wind, so they couldn't hit the target each time but we managed to survive, barely, but survive we did.
