History Of The Umayyad Caliphate
History Of The Umayyad Caliphate
The Umayyad Caliphate (Arabic: الخلافة الأموية, trans. Al-Ḫilāfa al-ʾumawiyya) was the second of the four major Islamic caliphates established after the death of Muhammad. The caliphate was centered on the Umayyad dynasty (Arabic: الأمويون, al-ʾUmawiyyūn, or بنو أمية, Banū ʾUmayya, "Sons of Umayya"), hailing from Mecca. The Umayyad family had first come to power under the third Caliph, Uthman ibn Affan (r. 644--656), but the Umayyad regime was founded by Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan, long-time governor of Syria, after the end of the First Muslim Civil War in 661 CE/41 AH. Syria remained the Umayyads' main power base thereafter, and Damascus was their capital. The Umayyads continued the Muslim conquests, incorporating the Caucasus, Transoxiana, Sindh, the Maghreb and the Iberian Peninsula (Al-Andalus) into the Muslim world. At its greatest extent, the Umayyad Caliphate covered 5.79 million square miles (15,000,000 km2), making it the largest empire the world had yet seen, and the fifth largest ever to exist. At the time, the Umayyad taxation and administrative practice were perceived as unjust by some Muslims. While the non-Muslim population had autonomy, their judicial matters were dealt with in accordance with their own laws and by their own religious heads or their appointees. They paid a poll tax for policing to the central state. Muhammad had stated explicitly during his lifetime that each religious minority should be allowed to practice its own religion and govern itself, and the policy had on the whole continued. The welfare state for both the Muslim and the non-Muslim poor started by Omar had also continued. Muawiya's wife Maysum (Yazid's mother) was also a Christian. The relations between the Muslims and the Christians in the state were good. The Umayyads were involved in frequent battles with the Christian Byzantines without being concerned with protecting their rear in Syria, which had remained largely Christian like many other parts of the empire. Prominent positions were held by Christians, some of whom belonged to families that had served in Byzantine governments. The employment of Christians was part of a broader policy of religious tolerance that was necessitated by the presence of large Christian populations in the conquered provinces, especially in Syria. This policy also boosted his popularity and solidified Syria as his power base. The rivalries between the Arab tribes had caused unrest in the provinces outside Syria, most notably in the Second Muslim Civil War of 680--692 CE and the Berber Revolt of 740--743 CE. During the Second Civil War, leadership of the Umayyad clan shifted from the Sufyanid branch of the family to the Marwanid branch. As the constant campaigning exhausted the resources and manpower of the state, the Umayyads, weakened by the Third Muslim Civil War of 744--747 CE, were finally toppled by the Abbasid Revolution in 750 CE/132 AH. A branch of the family fled across North Africa to Al-Andalus, where they established the Caliphate of Córdoba, which lasted until 1031 before falling due to the Fitna of al-Ándalus. According to tradition, the Umayyad family (also known as the Banu Abd-Shams) and Muhammad both descended from a common ancestor, Abd Manaf ibn Qusai, and they are originally from the city of Mecca. Muhammad descended from Abd Manāf via his son Hashim, while the Umayyads descended from Abd Manaf via a different son, Abd-Shams, whose son was Umayya. The two families are therefore considered to be different clans (those of Hashim and of Umayya, respectively) of the same tribe (that of the Quraish). However Muslim Shia historians point out that Umayya was an adopted son of Abd Shams so he was not a blood relative of Abd Manaf ibn Qusai. Umayya was later discarded from the noble family.- published: 03 Feb 2014

Following the Muslim conquest of Hispania, Al-Andalus was divided into five administrative areas roughly corresponding to Andalusia, Galicia and Portugal, Castile and León, Aragon and Catalonia, and Septimania.[4] As a political domain or domains, it successively constituted a province of the Umayyad Caliphate, initiated by the Caliph Al-Walid I (711--750); the Emirate of Córdoba (c. 750--929); the Caliphate of Córdoba (929--1031); and the Caliphate of Córdoba's taifa (successor) kingdoms. Rule under these kingdoms saw the rise in cultural exchange and cooperation between Christians, Muslims, and Jews. Under the Caliphate of Córdoba, al-Andalus was a beacon of learning, and the city of Córdoba became one of the leading cultural and economic centres in both the Mediterranean Basin and the Islamic world.

'CURRENT EVENTS COME INTO FOCUS in the back drop of 1,400 years of history changing events. Within 100 years of Mohammed's death, Muslim warriors were just outside of Paris, having conquered North Africa, the Holy Land, Persia, and Spain. Mosques of the Middle East
The Umayyad Mosque, Damascus, Syria:
The ancient Umayyad Mosque was completed by the year 715. A large courtyard paved with marble is surrounded by arcades. The arcade on one side leads to the prayer hall. The mosaic decoration on the walls of the arcades is more than 1000 years old. The designs have a brilliant gold background. The mosaics are also found on the old treasury in the centre of the courtyard, a small domed structure raised on eight columns.
Masjid-i-Imam, Isfahan, Iran:
Fountains play outside the Masjid-i Imam in Isfahan. It was begun in 1611 and was originally called the Masjid-i Shah. Almost every surface of the building is covered with patterned tilework, even the two high towers called minarets. The magnificent decoration of the mosque includes bold tilework inscriptions containing holy texts. These and other designs are reflected in the large pool in the middle of the great courtyard. On each side of the courtyard is a vaulted space called an iwan.
Sülemaniye Mosque, Istanbul, Turkey:
The Sülemaniye Mosque in Istanbul was completed in 1557. The mosque is covered by a huge central dome. Below the dome the light enters the mosque through a series of arched and circular windows. Like all mosques, the Sülemaniye Mosque has a mihrab, the niche that indicates the direction of prayer.
Friday Prayers - Mosque of Sultan Hasan, Cairo, Egypt:
The Mosque of Sultan Hasan was begun in 1356. It is still used by the people who live or work nearby. They gather here for the midday prayers on Friday, which are the most important of the week. The muezzin summons worshippers with this call to prayer, often made from a high minaret. When they hear the call to prayer, worshippers make their way to the mosque. They remove their shoes at the entrance and enter the mosque barefoot. Men and women go to different parts of the building. The worshippers need to wash before praying. They wash in a particular sequence. By the end, they have cleaned their head, hands, lower arms, feet and lower legs.
After washing, the worshippers take their places on prayer mats. The mats have been placed in neat rows facing the mihrab niche, which shows the direction of Mecca. This is the direction of prayer. To the right of the mihrab is the marble pulpit or minbar. During the Friday midday prayers, sermons are delivered from here by a man of religious learning. After the sermon, the worshippers perform the prayers, making a set series of movements. This includes several full prostrations. They kneel and bow forward to touch their foreheads on the prayer mats.
After the prayers, there is time to socialise outside the mosque, relaxing and greeting old friends. After 650 years, the Mosque of Sultan Hasan is still part of everyday life.
