The Poznań 1956 protests, also known as Poznań June, were the first of several massive protests of the Polish people against the communist dictatorial government of the People's Republic of Poland. Demonstrations by workers demanding better life and work conditions, began on June 28, 1956, at Poznań's Cegielski Factories and were met with violent repression. Some historians called it "Last Polish uprising". A crowd of approximately 100,000 gathered in the city center near the local Ministry of Public Security building. About 400 tanks and 10,000 soldiers of the People's Army of Poland and the Internal Security Corps under Polish-Soviet general Stanislav Poplavsky were ordered to suppress the demonstration and during the pacification fired at the protesting civilians. The death toll was placed between 57 and over a hundred people, including a 13-year-old boy, Romek Strzałkowski. Hundreds of people sustained injuries. Nonetheless the Poznań protests were an important milestone on the way to the installation of a less Soviet-controlled government in Poland in October. When Poznan riots starts, film director Filip Bajon was nine years old. " It all happened in my neighborhood . Suddenly the streets and backyards , where we played the war , the war started in reality. Suddenly tank appeared, with machine gun on it's turret, groung around were full of shells... " In such way director described this part of his biography. His memory is the only inspiration for the scenario. The main characters of "Poznan '56" are two boys aged 10 - 12 years. It is from their perspective the viewer follow the development of events. Children at this age have a natural inclination "push to where something interesting is happening." They have, however, also self-preservation. Hence, the camera shows the riots from the depths of the dark gates, through the railings of fences, cluttered yard. In Bajon's movie no there no "action" in the classic sense of the word. There is chaos, confusion. Revolutionary mechanism drives as it were, alone, carries more people, surprised by what they provoked. The individual scenes do not make a causal sequence, but a sort of "insurgent magma". According to the director of this reportage technique well captures the spontaneity of the Poznan uprising, guarantees the reliable picture.
