The Ultimate Isle Royale trip! See moose, otter, fox, fishing, hiking, eagles, loons, beautiful scenery and more in this backpacking adventure. Kindness from boaters and a sailboat ride too! We went to Isle Royale for 6 days in August 2013 to celebrate our 10 year anniversaries. We took the Voyageur II out of Grand Portage, MN to Rock Harbor. There were stops in Windigo, McCargoe Cove, Belle Isle, the Tobin Harbor mail call dock, and Rock Harbor. Our itinerary was hiking from Rock Harbor to 3 Mile the first night, then 3 Mile thru Daisy Farm to Moskey Basin for nights 2 & 3, Moskey Basin to Chippewa Harbor for nights 4 & 5, and picked up in Chippewa Harbor by the Voyageur II back to Grand Portage. The weather was fantastic with only 1 partial day of rain. We were there during the perseid meteor shower and saw many "falling stars". There were mosquitos only in the evenings at dusk, otherwise we did not even apply repellant. All music royalty free from Apple, Inc

I purchased this pack several months ago in searching for a versatile pack I could use on my bushcraft, hiking, and backpacking trips as well as other trips I take from time to time. It is entirely hand made in Duluth Minnesota by Frost River and the quality is supreme. I personally liked the look and feel of this pack so it is now my "go-to" pack for my wanderings in the wilderness. The main portions of the pack are made from waxed canvas. The shoulder straps are made from leather and padded buckskin. Other straps are made from leather as well, with all fittings being made entirely of brass. The side cinch lashings are tied together with paracord. I have used this pack for as many as 5-6 days in the wilderness. I have also used this pack for a 36 mile bike-and-camp where I biked 18 miles, spent the night and biked 18 miles back the next day. I have also used this pack as my carry-on during a recent flight to Colorado. In all of these scenarios, the pack exceeded my expectations. This pack offers incredible versatility, is "bombproof", and offers a ton of space options. It's ideal use would be for 5-day trips, tops Although I love this pack, no pack is perfect, and I have discovered the following in using this pack: 1) Back sweat can build up during day hikes as there is no frame or back ventilation system to wick it away. This isn't a problem for me, but for those of you who have an aversion to sweat, you might want to look somewhere else. I was surprised by the fact that for waxed canvas, this thing is incredibly breathable. 2) It takes some getting used to. The first couple of days in wearing this thing (on a week-long trek) took several strap adjustments to get it "just right" on my shoulders. Because this isn't a frame-pack, and because it does not have a waist belt, your shoulders and sternum bear the brunt of whatever load you are carrying. The shoulder straps had a tendency to cause discomfort in my shoulders until I had it adjusted properly. Otherwise, this is a pack that you will hand down to your grandkids. It's just that level of quality. This was another reason for my purchase of it. One last thing that really impressed me about this pack was when I came home to wash the thing after my week in the mountains... As I was washing it I was able to fill the main compartment with water, AND IT HELD! It was like a bucket. Frost River did an amazing job in sealing this thing! See you outdoors! Yosemite, Yellowstone, and the Grand Canyon not only take up most of the spotlight, they get the lion's share of the visitors. Here are 10 of the most underrated and far less traveled ones. Number 10. Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve, Alaska. The 13.2 million acre area is accessible by only two roads. The opportunity to see 9 of North America's tallest mountains and steam rising from Mount Wrangell, one of the world's largest active volcanoes, make it well worth the trip. Number 9. Channel Islands National Park, California. Fewer than 300,000 people in 2012 took advantage of this respite from densely populated and developed Southern California. Along the 5 island's 175 miles of coastline, sightings of harbor seals and sea lions are the norm. Number 8. North Cascades National Park, Washington. If you're in search of glaciers, look no further. This park has over 300 of them, making it home to over half of all those located in the lower 48 states. It also boasts many of the nation's tallest waterfalls. Number 7. Great Basin National Park, Nevada. A plethora of round the clock activities can be found in this 77 thousand acre recreation spot. Viewing its marble caverns and limestone arches are highly recommended daytime diversions. As it's one of the darkest places in the US come nightfall, the evenings are all about stargazing. Number 6. Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. Whether your interests lie in the prehistoric days or those more recently passed, this park has much to offer. A wrinkle in the earth's surface has made it possible to gaze upon 270 million years of sedimentary history . Number 5. Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota. Experience the badlands just like namesake Teddy Roosevelt did, roaming buffalo, wild horses and all. The landscape is similar to the one at Badlands National Park in South Dakota, but with a lot less visitors. Number 4. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Colorado. This is about as tall and steep as canyon walls get. An Empire State Building stacked on top of a Willis Tower still would come up short in comparison. Number 3. Isle Royale National Park, Michigan. Located in the Upper Peninsula and surrounded by Lake Superior, this remote natural wonderland is one of the least visited parks in the country. Its secluded location has afforded it the ability to preserve many ecosystems in their pre-1800s states. Number 2. Congaree National Park, South Carolina. Established as a means of preserving the largest US concentration of old-growth bottomland hardwood, this park has one of the country's most serious forests. It has global bragging rights too, as its natural canopy is among the world's tallest. Number 1. Biscayne National Park, Florida. Pack your snorkeling gear, because 95 percent of this park is underwater. Sights to be seen include one of the world's largest coral reefs, manatees, and over 70 wrecked ships. Watch out for the barracudas and the 500-pound groupers, though.
