The Derwent Dam where "The Dam Busters" (The RAF's 617 Squadron) practiced.
Operation Chastise: en.wikipedia.org Derwent Dam: During the Second World War the reservoir was used by pilots of the 617 Squadron for practising the low-level flights needed for Operation Chastise (commonly known as the "Dam Busters" raids), due to its similarity to the German dams. On 16 May 2008, a commemorative event to mark the 65th anniversary was held at Derwent Reservoir, Derbyshire, including a flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane. The event was attended by Les Munro, the only surviving pilot from the original raid, and Richard Todd the actor who played Wing Commander Guy Gibson in the 1955 film. 617 Squadron - The first year
617 Squadron - The first year Exactly what it says in the title. The group was formed in roughly December 2011 and gradually began to pick up momentum as the season progressed. For us, the first few months were always going to be about installing some mentality within our fanbase as well as improving the general matchday experience. A number of opportunities rose to do so and we've managed to accomplish 'laying the foundations' within a matter of months. Although not actually our first full year together, it just gives an indication as to where the group is heading. Onwards and upwards, UTI! Video contains footage from: Lincoln City Protest (Organised by 617 SQN) and various games from after the Christmas period including our first game together as a group and the integration into the wider fanbase.

22000 lb Grand Slam Bomb
The Grand Slam was a 22000 lb earthquake bomb used by RAF Bomber Command against strategic targets during the Second World War. It was a scaled up version of the Tallboy bomb and closer to the original size that the bomb inventor Barnes Wallis had envisaged when he first developed his earthquake bomb idea. Bielefeld, 14 March 1945 The No. 617 Squadron RAF Avro Lancaster of Squadron Leader CC Calder dropped the first Grand Slam bomb from 4900 m /16000 ft on the Bielefeld viaduct. More than 100 yards of the Bielefeld viaduct collapsed through the earth quake bomb effect of the Grand Slam and Tallboy bombs of No. 617 Squadron. No aircraft were lost. Arnsberg, 19 March 1945 37 Lancasters of No. 5 Group RAF attacked the railway viaduct at Arnsberg and the bridge at Vlotho, near Minden. The attack at Arnsberg by No. 617 Squadron RAF using 6 Grand Slams blew a 12 m / 40-foot gap in the viaduct. No. 9 Squadron RAF's attack at Vlotho was not successful.

Dambusters 617 Squadron Tribute FSX version
FSX- Dambusters 617 Squadron Tribute 617 Squadron, RAF, "The Dambusters" was a single squadron formed during the Second World War to carry out a single special and dangerous task. That operation "Chastise" has since become a legend in the annals of military history and it possess all the traditionally admired military attributes of originality, surprise and heroism coupled with a very dramatic outcome. Operation Chastise has in many ways overshadowed the later exploits of the men who formed the squadron. Over the last few years some people have questioned the actions of Bomber Command and the actions taken to destroy the industrial and domestic centres of Germany during the Second World War. I myself, have taken a sideline to this question. I do not condone or sanction what Bomber Command did in its attempt to destroy the industry of Germany. I believe that the most dangerous thing on this planet is man, as soon as people start to attack each other, the animal instinct takes over. Each will try to outwit or kill one another singly or in bulk should the chance arise. To this end any aspect of war is bad. People can pass comment on certain aspects of all wars but I do not believe it is right to criticise someone or something that they were not involved in or with. Modern information technology has made vast amounts of statistical and anecdotal evidence available to the historian but what sometimes gets lost in this mass of information is the immediacy and emotion caused by ...

Operation Chastise-RAF Attacks on German Dams
Operation Chastise was the official name for the attacks on German dams on 17 May 1943 in the Second World War using a specially developed "bouncing bomb". The attack was carried out by Royal Air Force No. 617 Squadron, subsequently known as the Dambusters. The Moehne and Eder dams were breached in these attacks, causing a catastrophic flooding of the Ruhr valley, while the Sorpe dam sustained only minor damage.
