Diversion dam

A diversion dam is the term for a dam that diverts all or a portion of the flow of a river from its natural course. Diversion dams do not generally impound water in a reservoir. Instead, the water is diverted into an artificial water course or canal, which may be used for irrigation or return to the river after passing through hydroelectric generators, flow into a different river or be itself dammed forming a reservoir.

The earliest diversion dam - and the second oldest overall known - is the Ancient Egyptian Sadd-el-Kafara Dam at Wadi Al-Garawi, located about 25 kilometers south of Cairo. Built around 2600 BC for flood control, the structure was 102 m long at its base and 87 m wide. It was destroyed by a flood while still under construction.

I think the river level is finally starting to subside. This vid was taken just before the sun went down. Sorry about the sound- it's gusting over 40mph out there. You can see the other side of the dam is completely flooded around, the water burst through the dike near the pile of boulders and is leaking into the cement irrigation intake, and that pipe to the right of the frame is the one I was standing next to in the first video I took of the dam while the water was still rising yesterday.

On an April, 2008 raft trip on the Dolores River (Colorado/Utah), we came across this rapid, which entails a drop of about four feet over a wall. First Neil goes over with Loli, and then Kirby goes in the inflatable kayak. We had to remove most of the gear from the raft to reduce weight (including myself and Sally).
