Lionfish the ultimate invasive species
Lionfish the ultimate invasive species
Lionfish eradication in Bonaire, Dutch Antilles. Lionfish are native to the Indo-Pacific region and were first documented in south Florida three decades ago. From Florida, lionfish have spread in all directions across 4 million square miles of ocean. It is not certain how lionfish were brought to Florida. However, all theories have one thing in common... man. Lionfish will have catastrophic consequences for marine life including already vanishing coral reef ecosystems. In Bonaire, lionfish are being hunted to save the reefs from further damage, ultimately caused by man.- published: 19 Jun 2012

Learning the Ways of Invasive Species: Joanna Bagniewska at TEDxWarsaw
Zoologist Joanna Bagniewska uses technology to answer the big HOW questions of biology: how do we know what animals do in the wild, how can we measure it? She has researched the behaviour of numerous species on 4 continents, and her doctoral thesis centered on using miniaturised data logging devices to study wild American minks.- published: 16 May 2013

Invading the Everglades
Invading the Everglades
Invasive species are a constant threat to delicate ecosystems such as the Florida Everglades. For over 200 years humans have had a great impact on these wetlands through agricultural development. More recently, the introduction of invasive species into the Everglades has proven to be detrimental to the native flora and fauna. An area once in balance has been disrupted by these foreign invaders, and is now in great danger. Species such as the Burmese Python, Purple Swamphen, Cuban Tree Frog, Tegu, and Melaleuca are examples of a small portion of invasive species that are disrupting the Everglades. A majority of these invaders have been brought in and released by humans, and once they establish a population in this sub tropical climate, eradication is unlikely. Through collaboration and education, we can help to restore the Everglades. Produced, Filmed, and Written by Nicholas Righi- published: 05 Apr 2012

Science Bulletins: Invasive Species
It's war in many ecosystems around the world as invasive and native species battle for primacy. Facing the increased exchange of ship ballast water among worldwide ports, biologists are grappling with a rate and scale of alien takeovers unprecedented in history. In this Bio Bulletin, see the mussels and crayfish that are stressing the vast freshwater network of the Great Lakes region, and learn what researchers are doing to give native populations a leg up.- published: 30 Aug 2012

Lizard Patrol: Episode 87 of The Perennial Plate
Over the course of thirty years, the Island of Boca Grande in Florida went from having zero Iguanas to over 10 thousand. This invasive species was making it impossible for native plants and animals to survive. The island finally decided to do something about it, they called George Cera. We went on trip around the highland with this hired gun… and of course we ate some lizard.
