Nauru (/nÉ‘Ë?ˈuË?ruË?/ nah-OO-roo or /ˈnÉ‘Ë?ruË?/ NAHR-oo), officially the Republic of Nauru (Nauruan: Repubrikin Naoero) and formerly known as Pleasant Island, is an island country in Micronesia in the Central Pacific. Its nearest neighbour is Banaba Island in Kiribati, 300 kilometres (186 mi) to the east. With 9,488 residents in a 21-square-kilometre (8.1 sq mi) area, Nauru is the smallest state in the South Pacific and third smallest state by area in the world, behind only Vatican City and Monaco.
Settled by native peoples from Micronesia and Polynesia, Nauru was annexed and claimed as a colony by the German Empire in the late 19th century. After World War I, Nauru became a League of Nations mandate administered by Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. During World War II, Nauru was occupied by Japanese troops, who were bypassed by the Allied advance across the Pacific. After the war ended, the country entered into UN trusteeship. Nauru gained its independence in 1968.

Nauru lies on a path and on two Ruvuma River tributaries. There are almost no paved ways. The village is situated 15Â km from the frontier with Mozambique (which is formed by the Ruvuma).

Australian rules football in Nauru
Australian rules football in Nauru dates back to the 1930s and quickly established itself, along with weightlifting as the national sport of the country.
The overall participation rate of over 30% is the highest for the sport in the world.
Structure
The football league system consists of one national league, run by the Nauru Australian Football Association (NAFA), based in the Linkbelt Oval, the country's only active stadium. The surface of the oval is crushed phosphate dust.
An interim Nauru Australian Football League (NAFL) has established after two workshops has been held under the Ministry of Sports led by Honorable Minister for Sports, Justice, & Health Mr Matthew Batsiua MP.
The Interim new Board Executives for NAFL elects Mr Roy Harris, Former Lions full back Player as the new President, football administration elects youth advocator a female to be part of the NAFL, Ann Hubert as Secretary others former interim president of NAFA Mr David Dowiyogo, and other passionate members Fidelis Amwano, Samuel Grundler and Andy Cain are all elected by community groups.

This Pacific island had one of the highest standards of living in the world, before it collapsed. This is the story of Nauru, 'the country that ate itself'. This territory, smaller than the island of Yeu, contains barely 10,000 inhabitants. Nauru is an Oceanian island located 4835km from Australia, and extending over 22km2. Nauru sits just between Australia and Hawaii.
It was not until November 8, 1798, when a British ship called the Snow Hunter, passed by the island on its way to the China Seas, that a European saw the island for the first time. As the British ship sailed past the island of Nauru, hundreds of Nauruans came out in canoes to greet the sailors. The captain of the ship was called John Fearn, and he did not allow his men to disembark from the ship. No Nauruan dared to board the boat either.

Ruhi Cenet is in Nauru, the least visited country in the world. Located in the middle of the vast waters of the Pacific Ocean and appearing just as a tiny dot on the map, it’s the smallest independent republic. Nauru is the most inaccessible country. Hardly 200 people make their way to this country each year. This is the least visited country in the world, even the closest countries are thousands of kilometers away from here.
Until recently, the locals on this isolated island had so much wealth that they didn't even know what to do with it. Once rich in phosphate deposits in 1975, Nauru became the country with the highest GDP per capita in the World.
Today, however, in these destroyed lands where no fruits and vegetables can grow, processed and fatty foods have become the norm. Nauru is recognized by the World Obesity Federation as the world's most obese country, with around 60% of its citizens are obese. The World Health Organisation also reports that Nauru has the highest cigarette consumption rate in the world.

Nauru, a small island that holds some big stories. From being the least visited nation to facing poverty and corruption, life in Nauru is far from ordinary. Known for its high obesity rates and being called an 'open-air prison,' this island has a history that few people know.
To understand Nauru's rise, we need to turn back the clock. Did you know that in the 1970s, this tiny island nation was wealthier per capita than oil-rich Saudi Arabia? Imagine a place where grocery shopping by helicopter was the norm - this was once the reality for Nauruans. This remarkable prosperity stemmed from an unlikely source: bird droppings. These deposits, accumulated over thousands of years, became the foundation of a nation's fortune.
As wealth poured into Nauru, it began to reshape the island's culture and values. Traditionally, Nauruans had lived off the land and sea, maintaining a balanced diet and active lifestyle. However, the influx of money led to a dramatic shift in eating habits. Imported processed foods became readily available and quickly replaced traditional fare. This dietary change, combined with a more sedentary lifestyle, began to take its toll on the health of the population.
While Nauru reveled in its newfound riches, there were darker undercurrents at play. The rapid economic growth led to mismanagement and corruption within the Nauruan government. The finite nature of phosphate reserves was overlooked in the rush to exploit this valuable resource. Moreover, the transition from a self-sustaining economy to one entirely dependent on phosphate exports created a precarious situation for the island's future.

This Pacific island had one of the highest standards of living in the world, before it collapsed. This is the story of Nauru, 'the country that ate itself'. This territory, smaller than the island of Yeu, contains barely 10,000 inhabitants. Nauru is an Oceanian island located 4835km from Australia, and extending over 22km2. Nauru sits just between Australia and Hawaii.
It was not until November 8, 1798, when a British ship called the Snow Hunter, passed by the island on its way to the China Seas, that a European saw the island for the first time. As the British ship sailed past the island of Nauru, hundreds of Nauruans came out in canoes to greet the sailors. The captain of the ship was called John Fearn, and he did not allow his men to disembark from the ship. No Nauruan dared to board the boat either.

Nauru (/nÉ‘Ë?ˈuË?ruË?/ nah-OO-roo or /ˈnÉ‘Ë?ruË?/ NAHR-oo), officially the Republic of Nauru (Nauruan: Repubrikin Naoero) and formerly known as Pleasant Island, is an island country in Micronesia in the Central Pacific. Its nearest neighbour is Banaba Island in Kiribati, 300 kilometres (186 mi) to the east. With 9,488 residents in a 21-square-kilometre (8.1 sq mi) area, Nauru is the smallest state in the South Pacific and third smallest state by area in the world, behind only Vatican City and Monaco.
Settled by native peoples from Micronesia and Polynesia, Nauru was annexed and claimed as a colony by the German Empire in the late 19th century. After World War I, Nauru became a League of Nations mandate administered by Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. During World War II, Nauru was occupied by Japanese troops, who were bypassed by the Allied advance across the Pacific. After the war ended, the country entered into UN trusteeship. Nauru gained its independence in 1968.
