The monument was erected as a thank you to god for Portugal having been spared during the Second World War. It is centrally located in a dominant position in the Almada, on the opposite banks of the Tagus River from downtown Lisbon.
The statue measures 92 feet high and is perched on a 270-foot high pedestal, which can be reached by an elevator.
The Cristo Rei statue stands with open arms in a symbolic gesture, dominating the city’s skyline. The views from the statue are as breathtaking as the views of it, with the sweeping panorama taking in the banks of the Tagus River, the 25 de Abril Bridge that crosses it, and the rooftops and spires of the Lisbon skyline beyond.

"There are some talks about a Pope from Asia. I would like that, but there are not too many options, but just a few. That (a Pope from Asia) would be a sign for a region where the church is growing more every year. But those are difficult things to talk about right now. I think the criteria is "the person" (to be elected) and I think most of the cardinals will take that into account. What we have to identify is a person capable to lead the church and -according to that - a younger person would give some relief in the beginning of this millennium in the 21st century. I think we need a Pope with more physical energy and with more time to be able to stay and lead the church."

"If we understand by 'head of the church" the Pope and his Curia - the body that helps the Pope - then we'd say there are quite a few people from there (the developing world). So although the majority is still Italian or European, we still have a pretty growing number of Africans, and people from Asia and Latin America, in the Roman Curia. So, if you want, at the helm of affairs in the church, gradually, we begin to see people from non-European, non-Italian backgrounds. If that's specifically the Pope himself, then I don't think we're too far away from that either."

STORYLINE
Two Catholic cardinals thought to be leading contenders to become the next Pope both talked about the succession on Tuesday, the day after Pope Benedict announced his resignation.
Both Portuguese Cardinal Jose Policarpo and Cardinal Peter Turkson, from Ghana, said they believed the Catholic church was ready for a non-European Pope.
In Lisbon, Cardinal Policarpo, talked about the possibility of a Pope from Asia.
"I would like that," he said.
Cardinal Policarpo added that the new Pope should be younger, with more physical energy and with more time to lead the church in the 21st century.
He also said that he understood Benedict XVI's decision to keep his resignation a secret as John Paul II had been put under a lot of pressure when he wanted to resign during his time as Pope.
In Rome, Cardinal Turkson said the church was ready for its first leader from the developing world.

Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of Portugal. It is the westernmost large city located in continental Europe, as well as its westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. Lisbon lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus, and has a population of 547,631. About 3,035,000 people live in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (which represents approximately 27% of the population of the country).
Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, it was captured by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1147, the Crusaders under Afonso Henriques reconquered the city and since then it has been a major political, economic and cultural centre of Portugal. Unlike most capital cities, Lisbon's status as the capital of Portugal has never been granted or confirmed officially – by statute or in written form. Its position as the capital has formed through constitutional convention, making its position as de facto capital a part of the Constitution of Portugal.
In this video you can see the skyline of Lisbon and the famous 25 de Abril Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril "25th of April Bridge"). This is a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon to the municipality of Almada on the left (south) bank of the Tejo river. It was inaugurated on August 6, 1966, and a train platform was added in 1999. Because it is a suspension bridge and has similar coloring, it is often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, US. It was built by the American Bridge Company which constructed the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, but not the Golden Gate. With a total length of 2,277 m, it is the 27th largest suspension bridge in the world. The upper deck carries six car lanes, while the lower deck carries two train tracks. Until 1974, the bridge was named Salazar Bridge (Ponte Salazar). The name "25 de Abril" commemorates the Carnation Revolution.
